The only reason you wouldn't is because you don't want to lock yourself into a long term contract. We had extra cap space last year that we didn't use. We didn't have anyone we wanted to spend it on.

I get that, but I'm still confounded that there would be any strategy other than winning. There are a multitude of options out there to make this team a contender with the cap space we have.

was on hockeyscap...

signed Zibanejad to 5 years 5M per (same as Brassard deal)
signed Fast to 2 years 1.875 M per

Those are the only 2 I EXPECT back 100%..

Rangers would still have over 15M in cap space after Klein retires (if he does). What are they gonna do with it?

Like?

It'd be better if this team started to lock up their young talent to longer deals instead of having to settle for short deals which end up costing them more in the long run.

Shattenkirk, Smith and Thornton

I really want to find a top line forward. Preferably a center but I'm okay with a top line wing.

Kane
Kchurov
Leon
Scheifele
Benn
AO

Or at least get me Hedman for defense. :D

Would this deal be nuts?

Hayes plus Staal for Zetterberg?

Not a huge fan of adding Thornton (at this point in his career) but we can obviously use some help at C. As long as it's a 1 or 2 year deal max at the right price I can live with it. Would love to hear his thoughts about coming to the "softest team in the league." ;)

I mean he wasnt exactly wrong when he said that. But we did win that game and made him look stupid.

I would still take him.

I'm not against it at all. I want Shattenkirk bad. But if we aren't competing these next few years, I would like to speed up the rebuild, and trading McDonagh and Zucc and Rick and whoever would help.

Who says or has said we aren't going to contend these next two years?

I for sure haven't heard it come from GMJG's mouth. I think Brooksie is wrong in his assessment and to where Gorton is going.

I think he made that deal yesterday to insure Shatty is coming here, the Smith is getting re-signed, that a UFA Center is coming to town(ie...Bonino and/or Hanzel). And I think he'll sign a Anders Nilsson type backup.

I have not seen Gorton be frivolous with money as Cigar used to be as Sather spent money like he was a drunken sailor on shore leave every year. It wasn't until Gorton came on board as Assistant GM and it's no coincidence that the Rangers had their most success and Sather's **** poor UFA moves turned into solid trades....thank you Jeff Gorton.

I don't see anyway, anyhow that Gorton is not going to dive head first into the UFA pool and not come out of it with minimum of 2 if not 4 pieces that we can add to an already solid core and we'll be once again as we usually are one of the top teams in the league. This is New York. There is not a chance in hell they will be going for a total rebuild. You can get away with that on the Island and in Jersey but not here in NYC.

It's our curse as well as our salvation that it's like this. Tho we haven 't won a Cup since '94, these past 11-12 years tho no Cup, have been as fun and exciting as any time I've been a Ranger fan and that stretches back to the golden days of the early 70's when we were elite. It's just the way it is here. We can't do a total break it down and rebuild. We have to do it the way Gorton is doing it and hopefully we'll catch lightning in a bottle.

Let's see what he does. I have a strong suspicion we aren't going to be dissapointed.

Serious question, what would it take to get Kane?

If we add Shatty and Thornton, we're ten times better than last year. And there would still be cap to use.

Our defense is for sure.

Our offense won't be.

Even with those 2, I still see this team as a 2wc at best, probably 9th seed.

I don't know why anyone would be rooting for this team to finish there.

They're not going to be a top dog in this division next year. I'm okay with adding Thornton for a year as a stop gap, but Shattenkirk makes NO sense right now.

Yes. He's going to be 37 and has a bad back. Signed for 4 more years.

I disagree. Jumbo Joe is not better than Stepan right now. Now, if you tell me Joe is your third line center ... sure, I can buy that. Not a 1C to try and KO Pittsburgh. We need a team that's skilled and fast and can keep up with them.

A cabbie looking for a $1.25 fare.
