DeAngelo should be perfectly fine in a sheltered role on the 3rd pairing while getting a lot of time on the PP. The problem is if this team is actually trying to make another run at the playoffs, I don't envision the coaching staff giving him much of a leash and if that's the case, he'll likely spend a lot of the year bouncing between Hartford and the Rangers.

Brooks also said yesterday 20 minutes before the Stepan trade that nothing was going on between New York and Arizona

He's got nothing

I think the one thing we're confident of is that NYR will use the cap space they have.

On whom is to be determined. But they have room for both Smith and another decent salary signing now.

Gorton made a big deal about getting cap space from the Stepan trade yesterday. Why would he do that if we were not going to use it?

Brooks is still connected. He had the Ruff rumors weeks ago. The problem is it's impossible to tell what's fact and what's just pure speculation. He makes no attempt to draw a line between the two.

Put me in the camp that thinks the Rangers are just trying to drive down the cost for Shattenkirk.

Use it on who though? There's not much out there. You just traded your 1C to open up cap space to sign whoever, but how are you getting a replacement for Stepan? Maybe they are more convinced about Mika and Hayes than a lot of us

Well from what I read, they view both as top 6 centers...

That is the $64,000 question. I pray Gorton has a plan in mind. I really want a top line forward whether it is a center or not. I'm not as hung up on an elite player having to play center. You can easily live with Zib as your #1 center if you have a guy like Patrick Kane playing wing for him. :D

If this stupid ass organization really thinks Hayes is the answer to trading Stepan, I want the entire FO fired.

What would be the point/benefit if NOT using the cap?

The only reason you wouldn't is because you don't want to lock yourself into a long term contract. We had extra cap space last year that we didn't use. We didn't have anyone we wanted to spend it on.

I don't either. I actually EXPECT them to trade for a first line center.

We still need RHD. Vatanen is still begin dangled and Minny is supposed to trade a dman. I haven't seen any indication that we are in on either situation, but we could be.

They should use this cap space to actually lock their own talent up. Though it's a little late on the post-bridge crew.

Imagine if they didn't make Stepan take a bridge to pinch pennies.

Sign Skjei for 8 years. RFA/UFA combo.

It's the only option at this point. Sure they have other assets they could use to obtain another center, but none of them are as expendable as the ones they've already used. They also clearly believe Stepan was expendable since they are betting on Hayes/Zib as the top 2 centers. Zucc? Nash? McD? Nash doesn't hold enough value, Zucc and McD create another huge hole in the line-up somewhere else. 2018 1st and prospects?

If it were me, I'd find a package centered around Hayes, defensive prospect like Graves (whom I like) and maybe next years first and see what's out there. Maybe that package is a starter for Duchene. I'd feel much better going into this season with Duchene/Zib than Hayes in the top 6. PUKE

If he has another good year, I'd be very much in favor of that. He'd be 32 when his contract ends, which is perfect.

If we're looking to add a top center, Zuccarello would be the first person I'd look to trade (I don't think Nash gets you where you want to go). Buchnevich or Vesey will step up this year.
