Because retooling/getting younger doesn't have to mean a total firesale..

McDonagh can be part of a winning re-tooled Ranger team 2 years from now

Also, we have tons of cap space and we're the ****ing NY Rangers.. pieces will be added. Despite what Brooks said I'd be shocked if Shattenkirk isn't coming, the cap space is there. Rangers will use it. Just have to hope its not an absurd contract.

So we are going to keep McDonagh, for 2 years while rebuilding just to sign them at age 30 long term? Why? Same thing with Zucc. If you arent going to try to compete this year, speed up the rebuild. Still would have Kreider, Zib, Buch, Hayes, Miller, Vesey, Skjei, DeAngelo to build around. If Brooks is wrong, and we spend money, fine, but if not.

We really want to bring in a soon to be 38 year old center coming off of major knee surgery and who also had a 32 point decline in production this year? I don't care if it's for one year or three, it's a ridiculous idea. This team isn't going to contend next season regardless of what they do with the roster from now until opening night.

IF the Rangers are leaning more towards rebuilding (IF, don't shoot me), its clear as day how big of an asset Mcdonagh would be right now to do it, by the time he's up for a new contract he will be 30, and Brooks claims the Rangers have no interest in giving Shattenkirk a big deal at 28, so why would they do it with mcdonagh who at that time will be pushing 31?

Thornton is 37, not 40. If I'm the GM, it's a 1 year deal or I pass. He may very well re-sign in SJ but it's odd they haven't yet. Not crazy, just worth keeping an eye on. I'd guess they are looking elsewhere and will return to Joe if they strike out.

If they add Shattenkirk, Thornton, Smith, and Boyle they absolutely will contend.

And its absolutely comical to read people complaining about Thornton's production of 50 points last year. He had just 5 less points than Stepan with two less games played. The guy can still play. He is a bigger body who could do wonders for helping Hayes learn how to be a big center in the NHL. He will still produce with Nash on his wing.

50 points is exactly around what Stepan put up last season.. and Thornton had 82 the year before.. maybe he's the Jagr of centers.

If they get another 50 P center and fix the defense, then yeah they will contend, they would actually be a better team than last year and picked up some future assets, the question is can they and who is that 50 P center they can even find/get now?

The only other option in free agency that fits that bill is Sam Gagner.

Hard no on Boyle.

I don't think we're going to be signing Smith. He won't be getting a 'market value' offer from us, as he requested. And he isn't worth what he would get on the market.

There is nothing wrong with a one year deal for Thornton. Anything more would be lunacy though. Same for Boyle. Only center that I would give multiple years too is Bonino, but they would have to be really careful with that contract.

I would try to trade Nash for Anisimov. Nash replaces Hossa, and gives Chicagoa lot of cap relief. Anisimov comes back as a better player and becomes the Rangers 2C on a very good contract. Can't imagine he would be a bad influence on Buchnevich either.

Do people really want to trade McD for draft picks? Yuck. Lets make moves to win not go in to the 10 year tank to mediocrity like Arizona, Floria, etc.

So the isles could have just exposed hamonic. Not a total loss. They net an additional 2nd and shedded grabovski's salary. You just look at both moves and feel they should have gotten more total.

If you are against ever signing anyone after 30 then we're not going to have much sustained winning.

Have to pick and choose. Not everyone is going to breakdown like G/Staal.

I would try to package Nash at 50% to St. Louis for Barbashev. He could be a 3C, and would look good with Buchnevich. If we could add and get Schmaltz from them too, so much the better.
