When are people going to learn that buyouts aren't cap losses, we GAIN cap space.
When the player you are buying out is ~replacement level then you gain cap space and you become a better team.
You can easily replace him with a player that cost less then the difference between the cap hit and the cap penalty.

Why not? "dead cap space" is such a dumb argument when the players ur talking about buying out are ~replacement level quality.

Let's say we replace Girardi with Bereglazov or Pionk... This will basically be the cap-hit for them

2017-18: $2,611,111 + $925,000 = $3,536,111
2018-19: $3,611,111 + $925,000 = $4,536,111

Then they are RFA, and we take it from there

Makar at 7 is way too early. I'd go for Liljegren at 7, or Pettersson.

PS: Am I the only one experiencing issues with HF Boards? It's slow as hell.

Well look, it really depends. If you're talking about replacing Girardi's $5.5m with a $3m buyout hit + a $925k ELC, then you really are still saving about $1.5m in cap hit and potentially improving the team. You're really only paying $4m for that player to be in your lineup. If you're looking at replacing Girardi's $5.5m hit with a $3m buyout hit and a $4m UFA, you're essentially paying $7m for that player to be in the lineup. That's steep.

We all know the benefits, but let's not downplay the problem.

Exactly, and after the bad years we'll be stuck with like ~$2.5m in actual dead cap space, which won't really hurt us much at all, especially since we'll have plenty of time to plan for it.

I'm clearly talking about getting cheap players to replace Girardi/Staal here. We have Bereglazov, Pionk and Graves on ELCs, there are good cheap options to get via UFA or trade too.
Guys like C. Miller or Postma. With some planning and good GMing then buying out Girardi and Staal is a clear net positive.

And I'm clearly talking about what may actually happen and not my personal view on strategy. Ideally, your way does make sense. Remains to be see what happens in real life though.

David Clarkson, who I once considered to be the (worst free agent signing of all time / worst contract of all time) is on the verge of being traded twice.

Aight, fair enough. And yeah, i don't think Staal is getting bought out any time soon, but it would be a good thing if he was.

Clarkson has only been traded because of ridiculous circumstances though, first Horton injuring his back so he can never play again while not being insured and now Clarkson is LTIR but has to be protected in the ED which leaves CBJ short on spots and summer cap space.

True Blue probably popped a vessel reading this.

But god, do I hope it's Staal + 1st to take away Holden.

Maybe Gorton can convince Arizona to take Staal along with Stepan. Since his contract is front loaded if the owner wants to save some money.

Dvorak+Murphy

for

Stepan+Staal with retention+1st?

Probably not though.

Yea but AZ has tons of protection space . Move him for an Entry Level contract and protect Fast

Exactly. It's not only a step trade... You're also getting a high pick, a solid prospect with 1/2 seasons experience, you get to protect Lindberg... Hell you can toss raanta in there and get another asset for him.

Nope. I respect Girardi way too much, and he's been one of my favorites players these past 10 years, even with his recent decline.

I changed my username once when I was drunk, used it for a few weeks and it didn't feel right because for some reason it felt as if people thought I was someone else haha.

Went back to AK and will use it even if Kreider leaves

That pretty much ensures a Shatty and Smith signing IMO

Let's assume we trade our 1st for them to take Staal (No retention) and Holden as the expansion draft pick... This is what our team would look like without moving Stepan:

Nash-Stepan-Zuccarello
Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Miller-Hayes-Vesey
Fast-Lindberg-Grabner

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Graves-Bereglazov

Lundqvist
Raanta
