He very well could be shopping them. The Rangers are tight lipped about this stuff. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the deals the Rangers made were for players that were never discussed at all on the board, or in the media.

case in point.. Brassard

Everyone was mentioning Stepan being on the block, but who honestly reported Brassard was?

The only thing I remember is the rangers were "open for business"

The one thing about Galchenyuk to note is that he's certainly not fast. We know Stepan isn't fast. The team, however, seems to be geared towards a fast transition game. Maybe the Rangers are looking for more speed down the middle.

Ok so if the Stepan trade is for a center (ala Brassard deal), and we get a pick back, I'm thinking that leaves a door open to move Staal. If Staal can be traded (with a first), our backend could finish this offseason substantially better
McD-Shatty (maybe?)
Skjei-Smith

3rd pair is up in the air. I expect Bereglazov to be included after watching him a bit in the KHL. Good poise + hands. Should be great on the 3s. I'm unsure who out of our recent signees could be his partner. Day? Pionk? Days size and skating may pair well with Bereglazov. Not too familiar with Pionk.

On the other hand, if Stepan is dealt for Dumba/Vat/Trouba/???, a Staal trade could still be possible. Staal+21st for some sort of depth center possibly? Unsure who can provide and is willing to take Staal. Eakin out of Dallas possibly? Coyle? Granlund (due for a payday and Minnesota already has a ton of cap held at center)?

Thoughts?
there will be no Staal trade unless he waives.
He has total control, again proof I am correct about never allowing these damn NMCs.
Small chance he would consent to a local club, but other than that, only team w/profile for situational zone d, class org, chance to win cup, quality of life, etc is --- Chicago.

They will not take Staal unless we take Seabrook.
That might be worth the gamble IF AND ONLY IF we immediately flip Seabs.

I proposed this on the Colorado board and it was a resounding NO,
MacKinnon for Stepan, Skjei, + a pick.
I think they strongly consider Stepan, Skjei + Buch

Max P for Step?
No want more...

I don't think that accomplishes much for the Rangers. Either get younger or need a defenseman. Wing is a position of strength
this^.

If maxpax, want also Montreal 1st 2017 and 2018 and McCarron.
However, other options might be preferable cause we'd be taking back a F we have to protect for one we gave.

Like the Brassard trade.

Literally no one, not even insiders, were aware of that going down. Just a general "Rangers want to trade part of their core."

And then BAM! It happened.

That makes it a good reason to shop him.

Maximize his value now.

Not if you think you want to contend again within the timeframe of that contract

you can't just ship everyone off when they reach their late 20's and expect to win a cup, IMO. You have to pick and choose who you keep but you can't ditch everyone

None of those are going to result in him getting paid less than hes making right now.

If Drouin can get paid 5.5 a year coming off of one good season where he put up half of his production on the PP, Galchenyuk is going to get paid pretty well.

Drouin's year is this past year. Galchenyuck is a year away. Drouin also was very good in the playoffs for tampa when stamkos went down. Drouin is without a doubt a top 6 player. Did he get top six minutes all the time? Idk but what i can see from here is drouin got minutes. Meanwhile, Galchenyuck couldnt get consistent top 9 minutes on Montreal whose forward corps consist of Max Pax Radulov and No one else.

I totally get that. I'd move Zuccarello before Stepan and think that he really should be "bigger" piece thats being dangled.

A year away from what?

Galchenyuk is due a contract right now, hes a RFA.

Hes not taking a pay cut. He may take a slight raise on a shorter deal but thats what will happen at the very least.

Listening to 690 tsn at work and Craig button was on and he said the Stepan contract is a very bad one

He said bad, not very bad. He also praised Nugent-Hopkins just a few moments before as an "excellent two-way center". RNH makes half a million dollars less than Stepan and the two are very similar players. He's just a talking head.

I'm not that impressed with Galchenyuk. He's got a good--not great--offensive game but he's not a very good two way player---a kind of younger version of Stepan without a defensive game. I wouldn't trade Derek for Galchenyuk straight up and I'd expect a significant add from Montreal coming back.

I like RNHs game a bit more though. Better skater. Better shooter.

A year away from his last good season.

This last season wasn't bad either production wise, he was actually on pace to out do his pervious season and was at a PPG before getting hurt.

Regardless, hes not taking a pay cut which is all I was trying to say. The trade with Chicago for NH makes no sense on that point alone.

Trading Nash @50% retained is one of many moves that should be made

Zucc and Nash aren't being mentioned in any rumours which means one of them is probably gone  although I'd rather trade Stepan. His contract is going to be a head ache in a few years and will decline faster then most IMO.

Agreed. But he's not getting any sort of crazy deal, or even what Drouin just got. Sure he may want that but teams who are showing interest in him don't have the cap space. I expect some sort of bridge at 3 to 3.5.

Chris Nichols quoting Bob McKenzie:

Brodin in Minnesota is a guy that is eminently available right now. I believe Minnesota is likely to trade him before the freeze. Montreal is by no means the only team in on Jonas Brodin."
