Two things: 1) via Jimmy Murphy (not sure of the credibility) Fleury has waived his modified NMC for the expansion draft and 2) Andrew Barroway is the sole owner of the Coyotes now. Not sure what that means for the franchise, but thought it was interesting nonetheless.

I had a dream last night that Gorton traded Raanta for Calgary's first this year

Disappointed it hasn't happened yet

One which is a top 10 player all time and another who's a generational talent. Hard to build a winning team around that :sarcasm:

The Rangers were too busy adding Lindros, Fleury, Bure, Nedved, Malakhov, Messier (again), etc - when we should have contended for #1 overall pick in 2004.

Not like we didn't have our chances. It takes a lot more than tanking to win the cup.

98: 7th
99: 4th and 9th
01: 10th
03: 12th
04: 6th
05: 12th

It takes tanking with a plan, being smart about it. Then rebuilding the right way when you stop tanking and start building towards winning.

And last but not least, it also takes some luck.

Rangers were roughly on that path until a 7th round pick turned out to be the best goalie of the post-lockout era.

Henrik Lundqvist will forever be the best and worst thing to ever happen to this organization.

I see one top five pick on that list (in what turned out to be one of the worst drafts of all time), no top three picks, and it skips two years.

Penguins:
'02: 5th
'03: 1st
'04: 2nd
'05: 1st
'06: 2nd

That's bonkers, and hardly a good comparison.

(That said, I do think you can win without 5x5 top 5 picks. But you need to be willing to accumulate assets and pick your years to suck it up and make savvy TDL trades of veterans to acquire picks/prospects, which this team has historically been unwilling to do.)

I'm not comparing the Rangers to the Penguins, what I'm saying is it's not like the Rangers were without ample opportunity to grab a good player in 6 out of 8 draft years from 98 to 05.

He robbed us of the opportunity to get Kane, Tavares, Stamkos and Hall.

I think the talent and scouting ability has been much improved since then, which hopefully bodes well for the future since we'll actually have first round picks in the upcoming years.
