Just to play devil's advocate here, why isn't that a concern for Panarin?
But wasn't a huge part of the Panarin debate how he would hold up over 7 years? He had soft years in Russia, he trains in some youth preserving way, whatever other magic bean argument over 40 roster threads.

There is no way to draw parallels between different players besides different eras. Kreider has the tools to be effective in front of the net, but so did JVR. Speed withers, but then there is Mike Gartner. There are arguments either way, but I hate the player comparisons.

I technically like the deal for both teams but giving up your best D prospect AND a first is crazy. Zucker is a good 2nd line F with an injury history on a decent contract and PIT has a thin prospect pool as it is.

Zucker is cost controlled for the next 3 years and lines up with Pittsburgh's window. They have like 3 more years to go for it, before they probably have to blow it up again.

I actually don't think it's that steep of a price for Pittsburgh. What amounts to a cap dump, late first and good prospect isn't terrible for a top 6 winger with term.

Seems very fair for both sides

That was rather meant to explain why Minnesota got so much in return, not the term being an issue.
I mean, why would a team like Pittsburgh overpay to get someone under term? I would think they'd be a favorite destination for the FA market, where they could also attract better talent than Zucker.

Zucker's production trending down. His earlier >40 point seasons aren't stellar, and might have represented his peak.

I really don't think its a bad move by Pitt. Right now that pick is the 28th spot. Addison is the most valuable piece, and while a good piece, isn't some super stud. Seems like it's worth an upgrade to Zucker from Galchenyuk.

And unlike a rental, you can re-trade him in the future to get some of that back.

What upcoming free agents are likely to put up similar numbers for the same price? Maybe Pageau but I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Alex Golchenyuk and a first for Jason Zucker?

Kreider is gonna bring back a HAUL.

Newhook AND a first.

Galchenyuk is basically a throw in at this point. Late first and a good prospect isn't outrageous for Zucker considering the term left on his deal.

Pay a little more and get a lot more with Kreider.

1. Obviously no guarantee that Kreider would sign with them.
2. The ~1.5 million might be a big difference for them with their current cap situation.
