I don’t think nyr can retain on both Kreider & Hank. They’ve already retained names & Boston retrain on Belesky. Iirc a team can have retention on 3 players going either way
The trade works without retention on Kreider, but isn't it the Rangerc an't retain on more than 3 players they've traded out? Or is it they can't be involved in more the 3 trades that involve retention? Not sure of the ruling

So we're just completely discounting last season where he produced at .5 ppg and that he has gotten better every season since being traded here?

I think he has proven exactly what he needed to in order to earn $6 million a year.
If memory serves, he did not produce the entire season. So taking the final portion of last season and add what's been played so far this season pretty much adds up to one full season.

He did. Quinn had issues with his defensive play (which may be what you're thinking of) but his offensive production was there all year, sans a 7 game stretch at the end of December.

We have good up and coming defense men. Quite honestly that is where our youth depth is but we do not have many if any consistent goal scorers that are close to being ready. You start trading a CK and how do you replace 25-30 goals and a top six line player. You can't keep plugging 3rd and 4th liners that will get you maybe 5-8 goals a year. ADA is more replaceable within the organization.

I seem to recall seeing the same argument when there was talk of Jagr and Zherdev leaving.

Rumor has it that Nurse will be getting a 2 year extension for about 5.6 mil per year. He just turned 25 last week, so this contract will make him a UFA at age 27, which is the earliest he could have possibly been eligible for UFA status.

Does that contract reflect a lack of confidence in him by Edmonton, or is it more of an indication of Nurse wanting out, a la Trouba? If it's the latter, maybe there's a Nurse for Skjei deal to be made? Skjei is only a year older and is locked up for 4 more years at 5.25 mil.

What do you guys think?

Edmonton did a two year so they can get some salary relief the next two years while they are tight on the cap. A longer term would have come with a much higher price tag.

If Nurse earns it, he will get a big extension next year on July 1.

Don Maloney spent most of last week in the NY area. He scouted at least two of the four home games. Los Angeles was in town too. The Flames are looking for a right handed shooting forward. Toffoli has been linked to them. Maloney was probably taking taking a look at LA too. Strome would work for the Flames. They could put him on the wing.

What are the Flames giving the Rangers? Zero interest in Bennett and Jankowski. Bennett should have been moved by Calgary one or two years ago. Jankowski scored 31 goals combined in the previous two seasons. He has just 2 this season.

Dillon Dube? Would that work?

The Rangers might be better off giving Strome a one year contract avoiding salary arbitration and they can possibly trade him next February.

Trading DeAngelo would be a major mistake. We all whine about our powerplay losing us games, we whine about Yandle being gone because of Staal contract. Don't get rid of DeAngelo, who runs PP1. Don't trade DeAngelo just because of Fox/Trouba.

Fox is an incredible defenseman. But have we ever thought that maybe he is excelling to the extent he is is because, aside from maybe a few games (TOR comes to mind), Trouba takes the 1st matchups while Fox gets the secondary ones?

Pair DeAngelo-Fox, see how they play in a bigger sample against the 2nd and 3rd lines. Trade Skjei, find a player to play with Trouba in the matchups. If Fox forces the teams hand and makes the play for the matchups, play Fox with a different guy and line DeAngelo up with Trouba.

Don't be narrow minded, DeAngelo is a skilled enough guy to play left side, and he is the guy we've always needed. We let Yandle go because of roster players (Staal). Don't make the same mistake with DeAngelo (Trouba).

Who is there to replace him? Which young defenseman is trending to being a 55-60 point player?

I said we have more depth at the position meaning we can get someone to step in. They may not score as much as him but if they play solid defense it is a plus. So my turn. If you trade CK and his 25-30 goals who is going to replace him?

Boston retaining on Beleskey doesn't count against our limit. We can absolutely retain on 2 more players.

And yet we have people who, if they had a choice would spend dollars on an extension for Kreider and trade ADA.

For YEARS, this board has clamored and begged for the Rangers to find a legit offensive threat on defense. Now we have him and... we want to trade him?
So you are willing to pay him $6 million per year even though he has played all of 100 or so games as a Ranger. Sorry he still needs to prove it to me to make that kind of money.

The Nurse extension has a lot to do with RNH and Russel taking up $10M on the cap for EDM next year. They can extend him with a year left, and those two come off the books. Posted about it a while ago, but I do see a 3 year deal being the compromise between DeAngelo and the Rangers. Works for both teams.

If I was a GM, I would want shorter term in general. I believe that having monetary incentive gets more out of players, so shorter term deals with more transactions work for me. It's in instances of franchise players coming off of their 1st two years of ELC is where I would go long.

The reality of it is, the market is going to self-dictate deals. You have a team like CLB & TB that does 3 year bridge deals and 5 year extensions all of a sudden have depth and cap flexibility. You saw a team like CHI who overloaded on the top of their line-up and don't have any depth to contend.

I think you have to be open to the non-formulaic to solve your needs. In other words, think like mathematicians and psychologists but not lawyers when it comes to contract negotiations. Find the happy number for both the player and the team because it is between the player and the team, and not the arbitrary market values that have used in the past. Cause you know... we've already experienced a couple of years of cap hell... why keep doing what you've been doing?

I think we should be speculating more on what kind of contract Kreider will accept rather than his possible trade return.

Read Carp today and am reminded that for most of the season he wrote that a Kreider trade was fait accompli. His tune has changed 180 degrees.

Trade then re-sign in the offseason.

What is there to speculate? We all know the range of dollars and term he’s going to fall in. Only a question of whether he’ll accept less of either to stay here.

He has actually played 147, and consistently produced for the last 115, roughly a season and a half and, is currently top 5 in scoring for defensemen. I feel ADA could put up 90 points next year and win a Norris and some of you still wouldn't be convinced for whatever reason.

So yes, I am absolutely willing to pay him that kind of money.

It's basically this:

He's literally the highest-scoring defenseman in the NHL under the age of 25

It appears that Carolina should be the team we should be targeting to send Kreider to.

They have centers (Suzuki, Jamieson Rees, maybe even Jack Drury), they have wingers (Puistola, Bokk), and they even have a nice LD prospect in Bean that we could use. All kinds of possibilities there and I don't even know if you have to demand a draft pick if they would give you two of those names.

Two 1st round picks too.

There have been reports that Gorton might not prioritize picks this draft. But really, it must be really easy to turn around like Toronto or Carolina's 1st round pick for a young player if that is what Gorton wants.

I'd easily take Rees and a 1st from Carolina if STL isn't willing to blow us away.

There are a lot of people who assume that a good offensive D-man is automatically a bad defensive D-man
This. DeAngelo absolutely is not your shutdown defenseman, but your shutdown defenseman won't give you 60 points. DeAngelo has the potential for more than that as he gorws, and only will get better on defense.

If your shutdown #1 guy can also be your 60 point defensman, see Josi, Roman, he will be paid $9M and not $6M.

DeAngelo @ $6M is something I would have zero problem with, and something no one should have a problem with.

Side note: Trouba, if DeAngelo wasn't better offensively, would likly be able to reach close to 60 playing PP1 with Panarin and Kreider and Mika. But the point is moot because that is DeAngelo's spot at this point.

Still no issue with the Trouba deal, may be a slight overpay but will only look better as cap goes up and if/when Fox surpasses him as shutdown guy and Trouba is the perfect partner for DeAngelo. If not, yay, we have a shutdown defenseman on a deal that will only look better over time.
