No Staal, No Smith, No Haley, and No Skjei (replaced with a 1.o-2.0 player on the left side) and replace them with competent depth pieces and we're in good shape. Unfortunately it's going to take at least until next summer to take shape.

Gorton absolutely cannot afford to do another buy out. No more dead cap. This summer's dead cap is already hindering him from making necessary changes. The name of the game this summer should be to sign 2 or 3 bottom six types in UFA to insulate the kids and give the team some depth. Bringing back Fast if he'll sign for something reasonable would be great. Still would need 2 more competent bottom six forwards.

Summer 2021 is the time to make big hockey trades. A lot of money is going to come off the books.
He can, and should, absolutely buy out Marc Staal.

SEASONSAVINGSCAP HIT
2020-21$2,133,333$3,566,667
2021-22-$1,066,667$1,066,667
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

I'd rather take the hit again next season and not have any spillover into what I consider to be the beginning of our window in 21-22.

Same for Smith.
I agree re: Smith.

But I'd eat another $1MM to clear Staal from the team (presuming you can't move him). If he's here, he's playing, and we've reached the point where the drag on a squad that's developing – and the space he's occupying – are too detrimental, IMO.

When Quinn was touting Igor after tonight’s game what he was clearly telling the rest of the league; come get our other goaltenders. Make us an offer. We will take a trade request to Henrik. We will move Georgiev. I can’t imagine something doesn’t happen in the next few weeks.

The crease belongs to Sherstykin. Having been around for the of Henrik, Richter, VBK and others when they first came up, this is an exciting time. (Giacomin was a shitshow when he first came up)

The rebuild has a backbone.

If Igor played the whole year then I think it would feel very similar to the 05-06 year; Panarin doing what Jagr did, Igor doing what Henrik did, and that same exciting feeling of hope for the future (but we still likely end up with the same amount of playoff wins anyway)

But this team has much more promising young pieces for the future than than 05-06 team had

Rumor has it that Nurse will be getting a 2 year extension for about 5.6 mil per year. He just turned 25 last week, so this contract will make him a UFA at age 27, which is the earliest he could have possibly been eligible for UFA status.

Does that contract reflect a lack of confidence in him by Edmonton, or is it more of an indication of Nurse wanting out, a la Trouba? If it's the latter, maybe there's a Nurse for Skjei deal to be made? Skjei is only a year older and is locked up for 4 more years at 5.25 mil.

What do you guys think?

They dont wanna have to give him more now on a long term deal is all. They like Nurse. He isnt going anywhere imo.

Nurse likely asked for the Trouba contract and got told no

This contract is the middle ground

Kyle Clifford is a guy I would really like for our bottom 6 next year
Possibly could have a forward group like this if there were minimal changes

Kreider Zib Buch
Panarin Strome Kakko
**** Chytil Kravstov
Lemieux Clifford Fast

with **** being the Georgiev trade; or putting Lemieux on the 3rd line with someone like Digiuseppe on the 4th

I think the only guaranteed forward spots we see next year are

___ Zib ___
Panarin Chytil Kakko
___ ___ ___
Lemieux ___ Fast

I had the same pipedream of Skjei for Nurse, but Bob MzKenzie tweeted that Nurse plans to extend before the bridge contract finishes.

I'd love Clifford. Plays a tough, heavy game and one of the best bottom 6 players in the league. It may take Matt Martin contract to get him though, which in fine with.

This is my fantasy, please no insults
Kreider traded, but then re-signs
Lundqvist retires, Staal retires, Smith buyout
Howden traded, Georgiev traded, Skjei traded, Buch traded, the 1st we get for Kreider traded, possibly some prospects traded too (even big ones)

Kreider Zib Tuch
Panarin Chytil Kakko
Kapanen Pageau Kravstov
Lemieux Clifford Fast

Lindholm Trouba
Zadarov DeAngelo
Lindgren Fox

Igor
Huska

EDIT: This is my fantasy so I get to make up the cap hits, Kreider at 6, Pageau at 4, Lemmy at 1.2, Clifford at 2.5, Fast at 2, Zadarov at 4, and Deangelo at 4.5; it all fits under a 83 mil cap

I want Clifford on July 1. Always liked his honest tough guy game. Good team player with experience and won and young at 29.

Lundqvist is the odd man out.

Jackie Redmond of the NHL Network has a podcast Puck Culture. Ryan Callahan was a guest last Wednesday. Callahan can't see Hank being happy being a 1B guy or a mentor because he is so competitive. He played with and knows him.

Even if the Rangers trade Georgiev, Shesterkin will be the 1A here. Hank wants to be THE guy.

Time (long gone)

Like a Painter, who has lost his hands
Like a genius that no one understands
Just like everyone, you’ve had your plans
But now they’re gone gone gone

Like a diver with two punctured lungs
Like a Great Champ that once was young
But now it’s gone gone gone”

Giacomin was traded
Leetch was traded
Bourque was traded
Iginla was traded

Some in search of a Cup, some for other reasons, but Lundqvist being traded isn't going to affect his legacy

Trading Hank is the obvious and best solution here, roster-wise and cap-wise, even at 50% retained salary.

However, the NMC really complicates things.
