The Rangers have returned to Lehigh Valley. They scouted the Flyers AHL team about one month ago.

Have the Flyers been mentioned in relation to Kreider?

I’ve seen many disregard them due to their LW depth, but if AV sees no problem moving Giroux to C they check as many boxes as anyone else basically. Could probably keep Kreider too. Hayes and AV connections. AV really liked Kreider.

I’ve also heard that Philly really like their youth depth. I don’t know if they have the top guys, but they are really deep on the farm.

I still wonder if a team like Toronto would be interested in Smith or Staal at half retained. They only have 2 dmen signed for next year, Barrie is as good as gone, maybe muzzin too. Smith at 2 mill would be a cheap place holder for next year who could relieve Reilly of some pk time.

The Athletic put out an article analyzing how far teams are from contender status. Spoiler: the Rangers are far from contender status.

Can you post the maple leafs one if you can? I'd be interested to see theirs.

Washington would also have to clear considerable salary for a Skjei, Strome or Buchnevich, but they could also be in the market for a pure rental of someone like Fast or Kreider.

Karson Kuhlman is definitely a guy I would like to see in the mix in talks with Boston Bruins.

I can understand why we reportedly “like their farm” even if they don’t have many big names. He is another one that is just cut out for today’s NHL.

Takeaways:

-WAAAAAY too f***ing many non-NHL players on this team but we knew that.
-Adam Fox is firmly a 1D and he's bloody 21.
-Absolutely do not trade Chris Kreider; there's plenty of expensive garbage here where you can save cap.
-Speaking of which, I would trade Brady Skjei for a 7th. Think of it as getting Kreider in return.
-Clean out all the f***ing trash and replace them with actual hockey players and this is probably a playoff team.

I think German Rubtsov had a strong preseason last year and part of a season with Lehigh Valley before he got hurt. Hasn't been doing much this year, at least on the stat sheet

For next year, Chytil & Kakko should improve. Shesterkin full-time starter. Those are natural progressions. Regardless of what happens with Kreider & Strome, this team needs at least replacement-level forwards in the bottom-6. Staal really needs to just...not be here.

I’m glad I’m not the GM because I really don’t know what the best thing to do with Kreider is; That’s a big loss.

For comparison, the Senators have three skaters in the red, the worst being a -0.4. Smith alone is -1.0.

Boot Staal, the defense improves significantly.

Boot Staal and upgrade Skjei, and you have a championship level D.
It’d have to be a pretty significant upgrade but yeah basically. Gorton has done an awesome job preparing this organization’s defense for the future.

Could Brady Skjei in Buffalo be a possibilty? Could we potentially be a third party in a Risotolainen/Miller trade facilitating Buffalo getting rid of a RHD and getting a LHD in?

Open question...

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that Valiquette is a supremely intelligent hockey mind (he could probably have a future as a GM, but that’s a slightly different conversation).

In many respects he’s likely at the forefront of the future of goalie analytics. How much weigh in (if any) may Gorton and co. take from Valiquette?

His consistent praise of Georgiev (elite east to west, elite on shots straight on, best positioning of the 3, etc etc) is irrefutable.

In JD I trust, but man I hope Valiquette is properly utilized...

They could have taken his opinion on a 7th rounder that looks legitimate in Phil Kemp.

I'm ok with Skjei, but he needs to be with Fox on 2nd pair. We need someone for the top pair, and we need Staal shot into the sun with Smith and Mckegg.

No Staal, No Smith, No Haley, and No Skjei (replaced with a 1.o-2.0 player on the left side) and replace them with competent depth pieces and we're in good shape. Unfortunately it's going to take at least until next summer to take shape.

Gorton absolutely cannot afford to do another buy out. No more dead cap. This summer's dead cap is already hindering him from making necessary changes. The name of the game this summer should be to sign 2 or 3 bottom six types in UFA to insulate the kids and give the team some depth. Bringing back Fast if he'll sign for something reasonable would be great. Still would need 2 more competent bottom six forwards.

Summer 2021 is the time to make big hockey trades. A lot of money is going to come off the books.

Nothing we don’t know. The young guys like a Kakko and Chytil will improve and see their scores go up 1-3 points each. Kravtsov will join the lineup and eventually be a positive 1-2, replacing a negative.

The entire left side of the D will be replaced with the guys in our system. Not so far from contender status when that all happens, and it’s all on pace to.

Our RD went from the worst in the league to the best in the league in like two years.

We had Girardi, Holden, and Klein just two years ago.

Gorton can do the same with our left side.

The pieces to begin that transition are largely in the system. Miller, Robertson would form a nice backbone on that side. It lacks a true #1. Would really like it if someone can play the offside. Because the next couple D prospects in terms of upside are all RDs. Can someone like Trouba flip and play left?

Miller - Fox
Trouba - DeAngelo
Robertson - Lundkvist

Even if no one can flip to the left, you could still do

Miller-Fox
Robertson-Trouba
Lindgren-DeAngelo/Lundkvist

Trade Lundkvist or DeAngelo.

Just need to start investing heavily in forwards. If you assume Kakko, Kravtsov and Chytil are future “2.0’s” or above on that chart, it then really, really makes sense to flip Kreider to say, Boston, for 1st, Frederic and Heinen, or a first and Studnicka and Heinen.
