The Buch contract is reasonable but there was no place for the Rangers to play him, unless you think tying up $12m in 3rd line wingers is a good idea.

How do we not get a hometown discount at like lets even say $5.5 over the next 4? Are we saying that is such valuable Cap or keeping a legit 1st line player who bleeds blue is going to cost us someone huge? Not buying it. Something stinks here.

Would have gladly kept Buch at 4 years $5.5 and found other areas of the lineup to overpay for grit and toughness. I'm not digging the Drury era but I'm not going to go full EdJovanovski yet.

At the end of the day, the NYR didn't want to commit that $ to Buch. They also wanted to open space on the RW and PP for Kakko and Kravtsov to play with their best players.

It's painful in light of other contracts they've made and how reasonable Buch's deal is overall. It's painful in terms of what they got back.

But it's done. NYR are banking on the kids to step up. It's time.

Everyone keeps talking about Vegas trading for Eichel now or that we can move Strome there. I would not be shocked if they just sign Danault to play that 2C role with Karlsson and Stephenson in more offensive type roles. You want to talk about a fit. He can just play with Stone and have one of the best shutdown lines in the league all while being above average offensively.
If they’re looking to win in the playoffs theyd be wise to have a more skilled center group than that imo

Pretty much

it sucks but you can’t pay a guy that much to play on the third line, especially considering they’re already doing that with Kreider

Danault is a defensive center, 3rd liner. Not worth the $ he is asking because of his limited offensive contributions and it would just add to a extremely tight cap in years 3 and 4. If we were a defensive team who lacks offensive ability than yeah, but adding a player that doesn't fit the makeup at such a high price makes no sense.
Zib/Strome/Chytil- I se no problem in maintaining.

Danault is the exact type of center we need right now. I don't disagree about the money aspect. But someone like Danault would be ideal. That's why people are mentioning Dvorak a bit. Not that they are exactly the same. But they have some similarities.

I'm not sure I understand. "If we were a defensive team who lacks offensive ability than yeah." So if we were all ready a defensive team, lacking in scoring, THAN it would make sense to sign a defensively minded center? But since we have a fair amount of high end offensive skill, but lack defense and some physicality, we should NOT get a defensively strong, 200 ft center? That seems completely backwards to me.

What we really DO NOT need and frankly, what we really should not want, is a guy like Eichel. That's the very last kind of player we need, especially at the price they cost. We have Ziban, Strome and Chytil. Assuming if we signed a Danault type, Chytil would get bumped up to 2C and Strome playing RW on one of the top 3 lines. To me that's a much better team than what we currently stand to put on the ice. And I think regardless, if we don't sign a definitive top 6 center, Chytil still moves to 2C probably with Strome on his right side for faceoffs. If we end up signing a top 6 center, then Chytil likely stays at 3C and maybe Strome still plays on his wing at 3RW, moving Kravtsov to 2RW.

But yea, we need something much closer to Toews, than to Eichel. I understand there is a difference between Toews and Danault. But they do share some similarities in complete game, defensive play ,faceoff ability etc...

If we brought in another high priced, finesse type forward, even if they do score 90 points a season, it would probably, in the long run, be a disaster for various reasons including the higher cap hit. And we probably wouldn't win a Cup or even make it that far into the playoffs most years. Because that would just be adding more of what we theoretically all ready have.

Kravtsov would’ve been playing 3rd line and he might do it anyway if they move Laf to the right like Brooks and even Gallant alluded to.
