can the Rangers sign a player for like 10m, trade him for 50% retained and get a 1st round pick? Maybe a team is only offering that player like 9m. We tell the player to do a sign and trade and he gets 10m but that team only counts for 5m on the cap.

This is for a 1 year contract only.
Can they? yes.
Will they? no. That would absolutely be a bad use of cap space. You're essentially giving up about 8% of the cap for the season simply for a first round pick. You're also saying that your team isnt worth spending to the cap, which sends a bad message to both the fans and the players.

I tend to agree, though I'm not sure how the Rangers would end up getting that close to the cap this year. We are WAY under the cap right now, still looking to move Strome, and most of the roster seems to be set. Even if a big ticket player is brought in, we'd still be close to 10 million under the cap for this season, right? We're going to need that cash next summer, but I wonder what, if anything, they are going to do with it this year.

I think you're underestimating the extensions of shesty and chytil.
I think theres a decent chance we lock both up for some term, and those get higher aav's.

If they move Strome and Georgiev for futures only, depending on who makes the roster the Rangers would be somewhere between 25-28M before Nemeth is official and Chytil and Shesterkin, so yeah way under especially if they move those two

Even if we lock up Chytil for some years say 4M AAV, Shesterkin gets 5.5. Thats still way under spending to the cap.

Anyone out there that's gonna go for a one-year deal with multi-year money?

Man some people have too much time on their hands.

Now let me get back to reading hockey forum posts for the next 8 hours..
The Season Ticket holders should have done this after Sather signed Brashear - especially after he offered to fight us all at a pre-season meet and greet.

edit @SRHRangers beat me to it

If the Rangers were to move Strome and Georgiev promoted Chytil to 2C (signed him to 4M AAV on a longer term) signed Nemeth (2.5M for 3) and signed Shesterkin to 5.5/5, then before factoring bonuses the Rangers would be 15M below the 81.5M cap with pretty much everything in place except a back up goalie (unless they kept Kinkaid)

I just can't see them going to the season with that much cap space. They'd use it somehow.

Best way to look at our cap space situation this year is as an illusion (except for 1 yr deals and deadline rental). For those who want to spend to 81,500,000, I present to you next year.

I would 100 percent bring Hank back if he wanted to.

So we sign him to a deal and at the same time have dead cap from his buyout? Only Rangers things :D

And yes, I would obviously bring him back for a year if there was any chance:thumbu:

I can't see them going into the season and handing Chytil the number 2 center position. Sorry but if you are Drury and Gallant you are not entering the first year with this huge a question mark. He may earn it at some point in the future but it is a big leap if I were sitting in their shoes.
