I don't think this gets it done. Gourde is pretty good but he's not a 1C and he's almost 30, Goodrow isn't a real top six player, forcing Panarin to his off wing to play with Laf is dicey, the whole thing just looks like trying to cram square pegs into round holes.

Edmonton has proven, for what feels like decades, that they have no idea how to put together a defense worth a shit.

And really, yes I do think Eichel can match up against top centers in the division. He is a top center. He needs a good team and coach but he'd be an excellent 1C for the Rangers if he was healthy and the price wasn't painful.

People keep tossing this phrase out there. Might as well say that we should sign Gretzky "if he were in his prime." Eichel has missed at least 15+ games in three of his six seasons, and he looks to be missing at least 15 games this coming season as well. The neck injury is the most serious one, but it isn't the only one. The kid is injury prone. If we gut the depth to bring him in, then who plays top 6 C when he inevitably goes on the IR? Goodrow? Rooney?

The Rangers have to do SOMETHING about their 1C situation. If they don't trade for Eichel, and don't sign Zibanejad, then what? You have this window you're trying to open while you have highly skilled vets in their primes, young and upcoming guys on ELCs, and if you don't have a 1C you're not going anywhere with any of that.
