By the way anyone complaining about Nemeth’s deal, guys like Cody Ceci are signing for 3 million for 4 years so far as I’m concerned the Rangers are making out like bandits

I like that Vince tries to put out a lot of information and think about things and put it all out there, it's better than the guy who maybe puts out an article per week if you're lucky, but sometimes it's a bit much. And he's not going to be a guy who's breaking the latest rumors.

But he's good for content and is a pretty smart and thorough guy

Question to me is, which contract is more likely to be a complete roster bomb 3 years from now. Eichel's risk is primarily medical; if he has serious career limiting health problems, there is a (good?) chance he could be LTIR bound and be manageable. Looking at the historical metric (WAR/xG) trend, injury history, and potential aging progression, Zibanejad IMO has a much higher likelihood of being a cap disaster.

I'd love to believe the NYR will be able to Tampa their way out of everything 3 years from now, but I'm skeptical for a variety of reasons.

Absolutely. This has been my point all along. I said months ago Zib will want 10m and I wanted no part of it.

Eichel was paid early. Paying guys at 30ish never pays off.. Panarin not withstanding lol.

I have gone back and forth about Eichel. But now with Danault seemingly a possibility I'm leaning back into the camp of trading for Eichel but there's no way I'm giving up Krav Niks or Chytill

And really, yes I do think Eichel can match up against top centers in the division. He is a top center. He needs a good team and coach but he'd be an excellent 1C for the Rangers if he was healthy and the price wasn't painful.

Thats why I said at this point its impossible to determine the depth of 2023. They barely played last year we are essentially going off 15 year old seasons. As of now it looks pretty loaded

well about 2024-2027. They never played either. 2021 was weak. Quite a few never even entered the draft. 2022 is loaded b/c many of the 2021 players are going in the 2022 draft.

All said, sure you can kick the center decision can down the road for another year and hope something shakes loose, but you might end up with absolutely nothing and in a worse spot.

It's a tough decision situation

Holik was horrendous too. That contract was arguably worse than Reddens and is only forgotten because it was in the precap world. Holik may have had the worst contract in NHL history.
I see your Redden and Holik, and raise you a Quintal.

Reading the old article from the Times about the "My heart is in Montreal" incident is like a transmission from Mars...and not a good one.

Capping an ominous week that began with Checketts firing Neil Smith, the team president and general manager, and Coach John Muckler, the Rangers were mathematically eliminated from a postseason spot for the third consecutive season despite rallying for a 2-2 tie with the Boston Bruins at a half-empty Fleet Center....

"Checketts, scheduled to join the Rangers in Washington on Monday, suspended Quintal on the advice of the assistant general manager, Don Maloney. In an interview with the French-language daily La Presse of Montreal earlier this week, Quintal said he erred in signing with the Rangers last summer and wanted to return to Montreal...

...The Rangers have three games left until their summer break. But Quintal's tenure with the Rangers appears to be over after one underachieving season. In 75 games, Quintal had 2 goals and 14 assists for 16 points with a plus-minus mark of minus-10.

''My heart is in Montreal,'' Quintal was quoted as saying.

Quintal, 31, is from Boucherville, Quebec. He played with the Canadiens the last four seasons before signing a four-year, $11.4 million contract with the Rangers.

''All I know is he doesn't want to be a Ranger,'' John Tortorella, the interim coach of the Rangers, said before making his National Hockey League coaching debut today. ''What Mr. Checketts did is right. He sent him home.''

See, the idea that it's "just money" is stupid.

If a 10m per contract becomes a bad one, that kills a team just about as much as moving a top asset would.

As long as Eichel isn't broken (which we can't gaurentee so it's hard) him at with only 5 years left is probably less of a risk than Mika who will have 8 years of 10 per starting in 22-23.

Getting saddled with a franchise hampering contract is worse than losing a top prospect, IMO.
Stupid is a bit strong….just pointing out his original statement lacked context which he corrected.

I’m not anti eichel if the health concerns check out, but I think when you have a guy like zibanejad who is part of your core and culture you sign him and find a way to get out of the contract later if/when needed. All this searching for a center and we are going to let Mika just walk? Sure I’d like to see the cap hit at 8 but Mika is a player who helps us win a cup….I’m hoping they find a way to keep him long term

I would LOVE Getzlaf as a bottom 6 option but it just doesnt seem realistic.
Could definitely have a Perry like influence on and off the ice which was huge for Montreal last year!!!
But yeah haven't heard anything of him wanting to come to NY

Something about me doesn't hate Zbad-Danault-Goodrow-Getzlaf but I really just want Chytil to be given his shot at 2C also.

Could Ziba be convinced to waive his NMC if it was to a team of his choice to which he would be traded with an extension?

Seattle? Ziba would like it in Seattle, I have some friends who live there working for Amazon. Francis is going to run a classy organization. Sign and trade with Seattle, Ziba gets 8 years x 8.5m per, 68m USD is a lot of money. We get Yanni Gourde @2.5m retained, i.e. 4 years at 2.6m per. 10m retained, that is worth in itself over a 1st. Gourde and a 1st for player with 1 year left to UFA and a NMC, can't ask for more than that even if some feel that its a lousy return for Ziba. I don't.

Keep Strome as a self rental for next season. We have like 12m of cap space this season to throw around, can probably get a 1st by taking on a bad contract. Get us a great 4th line by adding players on 1 year deals for which they are overpaid.

Goodrow-Gourde-Coleman was one of the better lines in hockey hands down, and they could handle any match-up in the POs. Kakko would fit extremely well in Coleman's spot. You have what, 45 minutes of 5 on 5 hockey that you must handle? Gourde's line gives us 14 minutes of great 5 on 5 hockey. A Strome-Panarin line will give us perfectly acceptable 5 on 5 hockey for 14 minutes too. Panarin and Laf can make it work with one of them lining up as RW, switch position a lot. I think a line with Kreider-Chytil-Kreider could be really really strong under Gallant, easily take 12 minutes of solid 5 on 5 hockey. A great top 4 line on top of that? PP? A unit of Panarin, Strome, Kakko, Laf and Fox has all the talent in the world and then some. We have a strong defense if Lundkvist does well. That team should easily be a PO team. Why wouldn't it? What would the weak link be? There are none. Injuries...

Goodrow-Gourde-Kakko
Laf-Strome-Panarin
Kreider-Chytil-Kravy

The real advantage comes in the coming 3-4 years. Cap is flat. We have a ton of cap space, can lock u our player to good contracts and stay away from the bridge deals. We can add elite depth. We have a ton of young assets to move in trades. This would give us an foundation over the coming decade from which we could challenge for a cup.
