So, where does this leave us in terms of offensive pop on the team? I feel we're still missing an offensively oriented middle 6 winger from this off-season. Is this going to be Drouin on a tiny, "bet on myself" contract?

That spot is still a void.

If we don’t find a piece we like for the remaining picks, I’d imagine Drouin will be the go-to plan this weekend.

I think they expect/hope Colton to be part of that solution in the middle six. He cannot be the only solution or a guy counted on to produce in the top six but he’s certainly got some pop.

Ross Colton is not a defensive minded grinder. He’s an offensive zone and middle of the ice sh!t disturber. At least that is how he has been used in Tampa.

I actually think a third line that's more offensive, but also just disrupts the other team, is actually what fits better for this current iteration of the Avs.

Good move. Really don’t agree that CMAC redeemed himself yet when I feel Johansen is a big miss as a 2C. Sure they gave up nothing but 4 million cap isn’t insignificant and there were better 2C options out there.

Colton will be the driver on the 3rd line if we’re fully healthy, but I think he’ll probably spend plenty of time in the top 6.

He’s also insurance if whatever project we get doesn’t work out in the top 6 (Drouin/Gurianov/etc.)

Now that I think about it, he's going to spend plenty of time next to either MacK or RyJo to take those off-hand faceoffs that Landy used to do.

Another smart value trade by CMac.

A good 3C for a 2nd rounder. This kind of trade would have cost a good 1st at the deadline, or perhaps an expected late 1st+.

This feels like Compher's replacement with a $1.125M cap hit. Great trade.

He’s gonna a lot more expensive than that.

Oh my bad. I thought this was the last year of his deal. Changes things a little but he's still a good addition. Probably still cheaper than Compher.

Costs more AAV than I thought, but on the plus side, this means he's more than a rental, and they'll have the 3C position solved for more than a year.

No doubt. Let’s hope the Avs can lock him up in the lower 3s.

This is Sakic and CMac's specialty with RFA's. He's arbitration eligible, but the Avs still tend to get good deals even when they go through that process. Last time he settled before his hearing with Tampa too.

as a Jets fan really wanted to get Colton as I saw TBLs cap-crunch, and saw the Essymont acquisition as a precursor to a potential move.

30+ pts in 12 mins a night last few years playing w/ studs like maroon, perry, joseph.... generates chances and puts it in the net at high rates as evidence by his 5v5 goals/60, individual-xGF/60, and individual-to-total on ice goals (highest in the NHL over the last 3 seasons). solid pts/60 - despite not the best offensive talents next to him. i think there's def. top-6 upside there.

seems to be pretty tenacious and not shy physically w/ 100+ hits, think you guys will get better production and overall value out of him vs Compher and his next deal.

Someone smarter than me, how is Colton defensively?
From a Bolts fan....

You'll love him. Tough in corners, great in the muck in the crease, wins face offs, skates hard and fast. He could be a 2C in the right system, just too much traffic in front of him now and we can't afford him.

In other words, our cap starved team got fleeced. Enjoy watching him play.
