And also at the deadline the price was a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and a prospect rounders for 1 Tanner Jeannot

I think that's what (some) people bitching about CMac and our lack of TDL deals don't appreciate - you tend to overpay at the TDL to get what you want. So if you do it, it BETTER be in a year where it can pay off. With all the injuries, McSakic made a business decision that this simply wasn't the year to overpay at the TDL and decided to save their chips for the offseason when the market frees up and the prices get more reasonable. Could they have done more in March? Sure. But they had limited assets to deal, and knew they'd get more bang for their buck in the summer.

It's paying off.

So why flush a 2nd on someone like Eller when your "business decision" is that it wasn't worth going for it?

Nice move, now keep going. Still multiple holes that need to be addressed.

Use these two 1st round picks, Girard etc. Get a quality top 6 winger to replace Landy.

It's a nice start to the offseason, but the job isn't done, no reason to be using late 1sts that are 3-4 years away if you are looking to win a Cup.

Because to get somebody a little better than Eller, you're giving up a helluva lot more. You're making my point. Eller cost us a 2nd. In the summer a 2nd gets you Colton. It's business.

The Avs weren't going to TDL they way through all the injuries. Not possible. As EJ said, 2022/23 was the "Cup Tax".

So why do anything then is what I'm saying? If you're saying that CMac knew for sure they weren't going to win, then why not save the 2nd and retool over the summer? Especially since Eller probably could have been had for cheaper without the retention.

It was a stupid trade no matter how you look at it

Absolutely LOVE this trade and adore the player.

What a gamer Colton is.

Led all Lightning forwards in hits last year, he looks to level anybody with their head down. Brings serious energy out on the ice. Underrated goal scorer, if he's encouraged to shoot the puck more and play more like a top 9 forward instead of a bottom 6 one, there's untapped offensive potential. Good in the faceoff dot, adds another element we need.

Super scrappy, hard-nosed player that you completely hate playing against.

Fantastic acquisition, I'm really happy.

Yep. He's a guy that will be slapping asses on the bench for whoever works hard too. That shit's contagious and should help our depth play with a bit more spark.

Some “under the hood” metrics on Colton:

- RAPM shows a really good possession player which I am sure helped sell the Avs analytics team. Defensively he’s pretty meh. XGF pretty meh too at this point. But he generates possession and chances with his intense play style.

- His points per 60 is around the same as Ondrej Palat on TB over the last 3 years. Suggests there may be some untapped offensive output here.

- Special teams usage corroborates this - he does play on TB’s second PP unit but is not a PKer…at all.

- He plays more winger than center in Tampa but his FO% is really good over three years with a good amount of draws - over 52% and over 56% on fairly limited draws last year.

- Of course we all know he’s an absolute hitting machine…he’s not big but thrives playing physical. And of course he’s got loads of playoff experience.

He’s definitely a guy who we should expect to lean more as an offensive middle six player than a defensive stopper of some kind.

His usage has really been restricted to bottom six minutes in TB so some of the extrapolation of his per/minute numbers needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Tampa’s had top six minutes available and he’s never really been able to crack that kind of usage unlike say a guy like Hagel. But the Avs have also done a great job of identifying under-utilized players with certain traits that they then turn into something “more”…Lehkonen being the most obvious recent example. So this may be a bet on Ross Colton as more of a 17 minute middle six guy as opposed to the 13 minute bottom six player.

The retention thing is a bit curious, but I think it's clear there was either something else potentially in play, or they were expecting to need it, (i.e Landy coming back..) which was obviously not the case in the end.

Like it or not a 2nd two years down the line is more like a 3rd or 4th in this years draft in terms of value. I don't mean that because of the strength of an individual draft, just in that something now is worth more than something far off in the future. You are counting it as a second and it is, but at the same time it's not in terms of TDL value, if that makes sense.

Basically, they spent about as little as possible given the assets we had without spending zero.

Honestly, I don't like most of the decisions the FO made last year, maybe including the Eller trade, but the price we paid for Eller wasn't that significant.

I am now completely convinced they learned Landy wasn't coming back and quietly threw in the towel. It's the only thing that makes sense.
Its not throwing in the towel, its taking your shot with what you have. I don't get the go all-in all the freaking time mentality of posters, its the NHL nothing is guaranteed. The Avs would appear to be a much better team now than what they went into the playoffs with but even that could run into a first round defeat.

I really like the GM office of this team the last two years. They made good TDL moves for guys they were going to keep and won a Cup, then scaled back and didn't throw away assets for a more difficult Cup run. Now they are making great value moves with teams that need to shed some salary without giving much up. Maybe they move one more pick but if the price isn't great just go pick two guys tonight and see where it takes you. Those guys could be flipped in the future or contribute some much needed youth in a couple years. Just because guys like Kaut or Bowers didn't work out doesn't mean they should never use a draft pick again.

Another thing we'll love about Colton is that he's a dirty area player. He's going to thrive in the areas of the ice the Avs have some trouble with from time to time. If they needs to condense, he could play on a top 6 line and really get some greasy goals when needed.

I'm not saying it was significant. All I'm saying is that CMac wasn't playing 4D chess and just made some f***ing stupid moves. And it's okay to acknowledge that without pretending he had some kind of master plan

This is a very good point. The times JTC was efficient is exactly when he was going to those dirty areas. Unfortunately he was very inconsistent about how often he was doing that. Colton does this all the time.

The point is they only do deals where the value is right. Just because the value is right, doesn't mean it will always work out.

Last deadline there were no big moves that made sense because of the value every team (out of contention) had. But everyone freaked out at CMac because they thought he was just sitting on his hands.

The value has changed and we are able to trade with good teams in Cap trouble (Tampa) and bad teams desperate for young players (Montreal) with fair value.

Was Denis Malgin supposed to be convincing? Seems like a flawed stat
Malgin was/will be a curious player to watch. He obviously has talent. There are times where he's a little waterbug darting in and out of traffic and all over the ice with reckless abandon and making nifty passes along the way. Then there is his size, actually just the fact that at his size, darting in and out of traffic all the time can be a risky habit in the long run. I would say that the stat speaks more about how bad the team was at generating chances than anything else though.

He hits too, which is adorable.

I mean are you arguing the value of Eller was right? It was a shit trade, you can admit it, it's okay

CMac did sit on his hands. Same as Sakic a few years ago

You are not getting it. I will 100% admit Eller was a shit trade when it happened and now. But am I happy our big spend at the deadline was a 2025 2nd round pick for a player now off our books? Yep.
