I don't think selling him on a multi-year will be too hard. He is used to being a competitive environment with a contender, he knows firsthand the Avalanche are winners, and can look at their window and see playoffs/contenders for at least 2-3 more seasons before a rebuild would be on the horizon.

Maybe he wanted out for a bigger opportunity. Its a bit weird how much they paid to get Jeannot vs what they got for Colton...
Well, I try not to think about TB too much, but maybe when they signed Nick Paul and moved Colton to primarily the wing (which is just something I read here a minute ago), they felt like one year left and going into RFA made him expendable for a high second rounder. They do draft well.

What kind of a player is Colton? What roles he can play, is he speedy, how's his IQ?
He's an undersized, effort 3rd liner. Good speed, plays physical, great motor, yappy... Offensively his best traits are his shot and his tenacity. Not super good with the puck, but doesn't really hurt you. His game is north/south. Defensively he's pretty good, I wouldn't say elite, but he can matchup just fine and hold his own.

Tampa really couldn't keep him longer-term, they have their own cap issues, but as much as that... when they got Paul they locked themselves into a Point-Cirelli-Paul rotation at center.

Management learned the lessons from the playoffs. The bottom 6 needed and will be completely re-built.
Yup and it was much needed too.
UFA in a year might bring the price down
I don't think this deal was made before they had an idea what he was looking for in a contract. I'd expect an extension announced within the next few days.
What about a 3x3 contract?
I think it will be around there... I'd like to see it a bit longer personally if the player is open to that. Something like $2.75X5 would be my preference but I could also see something like $3X4 or $3X3 that's the range I'm expecting.

This is going to be one of those under the radar trades where people will go back and say how did we pull this off for so little? Maybe not as impactful as Toews but Colton is about to get nice uptick in opportunity and minutes on this team. Best thing about him is that he's a physical shoot first player who is great on the forecheck. Checks every box that we desperately needed in our forward group.

I expect a big production boost this year. Our pro scouts are some of the best. I am loving the aggressiveness of Cmac thus far.

Awesome, thanks man I appreciate it! Sounds like an excellent get. Any thoughts in his next contract? And does he PK well?

We finally got 1 of my Tampa favorites, only gave up a 2nd round pick, & now have MacK-RyJo-Colton down the middle?

High 3s to low 4s is my guess... somewhere around 3-5 years. He has not been used in a PK role in Tampa... he did coming up into the NHL, but hasn't been his role in the NHL. Hard to say there. He has the tools for it though.
