Come on now. I am excited about the guy but he has played two full NHL seasons, scoring 35+ in one of them.

There is just no way this guy should come close to 4M per season, especially not more than 4M.
Unfortunately it usually averages out to 100k per point. Plus they know the cap is going up like 10m in the next 2 to 3 years

Trade this guy back already, he's taking way too long to sign here. He's showing poor character and doesn't seem like a team player at all. Feels like another Ryan O'Money in our hands.
Avs are probably and should be holding out for each 100k difference in Salary as it really matter this year

Overall, think we just need to be patient. Colton's interview after the trade (don't know where it was, lots of stuff going on since it was Draft Day/UFA weekend), he seemed fine. Said that he and his agent talked w/ the Avs, he knew that it was Draft Day/UFA Weekend and that they were busy and we'd get circled back to, etc. The gist was that he was fine and knew it would likely take a little bit before it was finalized.

Other than that, some time last week CMac was on both Altitude Sports Radio and NHL Network Radio and on the subject of Colton he wasn't bothered by it. Just said he'd continue "chipping/working away with the agent".

In addition, I don't think any team doesn't acquire a player without knowing the general area in which they're looking at signing for. This will get done, and I am going to assume it will get done at 4 or 5 years so that the Avs get a little bit of term on the deal.

For sure.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Avs are simply trying to long term project out their cap. Between Toews and Colton, they need to have an idea of what their future cap structure is, plus they need to factor any potential moves for this season.

This guy is the perfect age and fit for a medium term contract, in the 4-5 year range.
Enough to get his valuable years, and motivation enough for him to want to get another big contract in his early 30s

I could see him wanting a short deal 1-2 years, hoping to play himself into the Avs top six and then cash in big.

Anybody thinking he gets below 4M is just pure delusion at this point. Don't you think if the Avs could have gotten something done for under 4M it would have been done weeks ago lol?

He's easily getting 4M. On a ~2 year deal it's probably right at $4M. On a longer term deal with more UFA years which is what the Avs are definitely pushing for, probably $4.5M.

It'll be either 2x$4M which will also mean the Avs clearly caved and didnt get near what they wanted out of this, or 5x$4.5M(Same as what Lehky got in a similar spot).

I agree...it'll be 4 or 5 at 4.5.

I think I have some slight disagreement...on a 2 year deal, I feel he's in the 3.5M range, maybe +/- 250k...so close to the 4M, but not quite.

Longer term, I think we're obviously in the 4-4.5M range. The issue is that he only has 2 full seasons of data/stats to argue his case...it's just that one of those two seasons was a 22 goal/39 point season. So he's definitely going to look at what JTC got. Right or wrong he will. The shitty thing is, everyone knows that JTC is overpaid at 5.1M, but it's what the market dictated he's worth. He's never hit 20 goals, he only broke through 50 points once, and that was last year when he got spoonfed a lot of minutes that included Mikko stapled to him, and he still didn't get 20 goals.

So, unfortunately for us, we are probably looking at at least 4M on a 4-5 year deal if that's what we want, and we probably are trying to get that number as close to 4M as possible, if not under.

According to @The Mars Volchenkov Evolving Hockey projected a 4-year, $3.3 million per-year contract for Colton.

That 4M+ nonsense must stop, he's not worth that, plain and simple. At 3.5M X 4 he'd still be slightly overpaid.

Outsiders were really surprised with the 6 years for Wood, in a bad way. If CMac caves again on term or AAV it won't look good.
