Just following the Toews path. Get traded, file for arbitration, and sign a deal approx two weeks later. Friedman said they weren't too far apart so I trust it gets done soon.

Can they actually elect two years in arbitration? Even though it's a UFA year? Looks that way..

I mean if he gets like 3.5 in arbitration, you just select two years and come back to it.
Arbitration years can only take up RFA years, so only one for Colton. If he had two RFA years left, then the Avs could have selected two.

Sustained success without good player development or drafting. Definitely sounds like a recipe for success.

Kind of fits in with the ignore the centre position and go for half measures modality pushed by CMac as well.
They have addressed the center position this summer for the wins now. Future center depth with Ritchie. Wether this works or not is a coin flip. Criticizing the front office without having an idea of what’s being talked about closed doors seems short sighted. If anyone of us or management made every move correctly we’d never lose. This management group has been extremely Davy of late and deserve the benefit of the doubt. They gave newhook an opportunity to take the job and run with it, he didn’t. They recognized that they and shipped him out

Come on now. I am excited about the guy but he has played two full NHL seasons, scoring 35+ in one of them.

There is just no way this guy should come close to 4M per season, especially not more than 4M.
I mean he scored 32 this year, 39 last year. JTC scored 32 in 66(39pt pace) and 23 in 69(28pt pace) prior to his contract. So offensively he‘s ahead of where JTC at that point and contract inflation as well. 4mil is very easily in line with his value.

And one could argue that contract at that time was an overpay for Compher.

Inflation is a bitch, I bet it's high threes to four million in arbitration for the one RFA year. It's the UFA years that drive it up, also knowing the cap will rise.

My hope is 5 X $3.8M

I think the mindset from Colton’s camp is that they know he is heading into a great situation. No doubt his minutes are going to go up this season and likely his production too.

If you’re the agent, you want him to sign a 1-2 year deal that might be a little cheaper, then really cash in when he has better numbers and is still under 30.

Colorado is probably wanting 3 years minimum.

Just as an aside… you have to pay for hits in the NHL and this guy throws a ton of them.

Reaves, Hathaway, Schenn, all those guys got more money than they should’ve because they throw hits.

Compher in 2019 signed a $3.5 million dollar contract coming off a 32 point season with 66 games played. The cap back then was $81.5 million.

Colton just came off a 32 point season with 81 games played. The cap hit next season will be $83.5 million. However, we know that will jump to at least $87.5 million the fallowing season.

Colton signing a multi year contract for 700k more seems pretty on point.

Have Colt tank his arbitration hearing, then immediately give him an extension get him cheap this year and make up the difference when the cap goes up.
