Didn´t Toews do the same only to sign his contract a few days after?

I am not concerned that he wont sign, I´m more concerned for how much.

Didn´t they speak to the player to test the waters before trading for him?

My guess 5x3.7

I think you pretty much nailed it.

Longer contract guarantees more money instead of going like 4 to 4.5m per year maybe 3.75m but give 2 more years in the deal
He’s giving up the prime UFA earning years. This is a guy who just saw Copp and Compher get 5+ with term. Financially taking less for 6 years would be a terrible decision. If the Avs want less, the natural way is for 2-3 years so he can cash in prior to 30 with a big deal.

I agree, the Avs can't afford to give him 5m if they want to fill out the roster 4m would probably be pushing the limit

CMac said himself they gave Miles Wood, who's just a year older than Colton, and actually was a UFA, a 6 year term specifically to get the AAV down.

Whether Colton wants to do that is another question, but longer term can definitely get you a lower AAV for guys willing to do so. We've seen that happen many times.

Some guys value stability, security, location, and playing for a winning team, over short term mercenary work to get top dollar.

Those guys are UFAs.

That's probably what they're hoping for, but the deal would probably be done by now if the AAV on a longer deal was close.

If this was going to get done for something in the 3s, it clearly would have been done by now.

It'll start with a 4. Just a matter of whether it's a long term 5-6 year deal in the mid to high 4s, or a shorter 2-3 year dealdeal in the low 4s.

4x3.5.

very statistically similar to nicolas roy who signed 4x3m last year.

Just relax with the long ass term to bottom 6ers. Are we the Islanders?

I generally agree, but I’d like term on this deal. Doesn’t have to be crazy like 6/7 years, but 3-5 would be nice.

He’s 26 with 190 NHL games, he’s probably entering his prime years here for the next 3-4 seasons.

CMac also seems like he’s trying to build sustained success in Colorado. He’s doing everything he can to improve the team without giving up too many assets. Lets’s face it, the Avs don’t develop their own depth very often. So when they can get a good player via trade, it helps to keep them around for more than just a year, or two.

Sustained success without good player development or drafting. Definitely sounds like a recipe for success.

Kind of fits in with the ignore the centre position and go for half measures modality pushed by CMac as well.

Agree with this haha. If he just busts on picks like Ritchie and Gulyayev then it’s all for not.

I disagree on the centre part though, I actually think what Colorado has at 1/2/3C is one of the better groups in the league.

If it was going to get done for $3M (or less), he'd probably still be on Tampa.

If it was going to cost over $5M, the Avs may have kept Compher.

The above graph is if Colton came to a deal outside of arby

Colton is a UFA in a year. You want his UFA years… should be mid to high 4s

What do you think it takes for 4 or 5 years? 4.5? I guessed the AAV was 2.3 on Wood, but I'm sure they hoped for that too.

Closer to 4M would be nice, but Lehhky is at 4.5..

What I forgot is the two year thing. They can actually make it a two year deal at the arbitration award.

Means he isn't likely to cost more than 4M for two years. Could be closer to 3.5, but if they can pick two years regardless. That's the hammer they have for going longer.
