Gotta be honest.

I know it’s totally normal procedure, but if I’m a team exec and I’m talking with you close to getting a deal done and you go and put a deadline on it with arbitration… probably doesn’t sit well with me.

Good thing I’m not a hockey exec.

Actually, management now knows he can't be given an offer sheet (which is rare) and given that the vast, vast majority of those who file for arbitration get a contract done before the process starts, they're probably happy. Let the guy find a place to live, send an offer and expect a counter offer from his agent, etc. because it's early July and this will get done before a hearing.

Yeah but the deadline to file for arbitration was today at 5pm EST. At least this guarantees he'll have a contract, and doesn't have to risk holding out.

They'll most likely get the deal done before arbitration, but he and his agent had to cover their bases. He said they told him after the trade that their intention was to sign him and they'd circle back over the weekend, but that obviously didn't result in the deal getting done yet.

If it goes to arbitration it guarantees a 1 year, straight-to-UFA contract. Sometimes holding out like Rants did is better.

Honestly that would probably pay Colton more in the long run. He'd get a fair deal on the one year, and then almost assuredly get more as a UFA long term, than from the Avs who usually get good deals.

But the downside for him is he'd be giving up some security and a chance to stick with a perennial Cup contender that believed in him and wanted to trade for him.

I think it gets done before hand though. When was the last time the Avs actually went through arbitration? Tyson Barrie in 2016?

Slow Avs can't get the deal done in time and it delays other moves (best case scenario) until they have cost certainty. Noice!

Yeah, it comes across as a cautious move by his agent, but not a super good look.
