Based on last season Newhook isn't worth 2M, if he improves then sure. Should have been sent to the AHL last season after his garbage efforts.

I'll guess 3.875m x 3yrs. Kind of right in the middle of every strategy.
I think with an expanded role he could really make that look like an underpayment quickly, and perhaps even grow into a 2nd line role, especially with some of our high end wingers that can help defensively.
I like the physical element of his game too. Colton and Wood are both good adds in terms of physicality and pestyness come playoff time.

You can be disappointed in Newhook's play if you wish, but in today's NHL, 15g/30pts gets a non-ELC player a $2M per year contract. Quite easily.
Not if they don't provide anything else outside of points though...
Where's Drouin's $2M contract?
Yeah Newhook was going to get 2-2.5m on a ~2 year deal. The issue with Newhook was more about the role on the team. He's not a top 6 center and he's not a good 3C with his style of play... which leaves him to the wings where he has his own issues. The Avs weren't simply willing to deal with is potential contract to be a 4th liner or his growing pains on wing.
I really wish Newhook the best and hope he flourishes in Montreal. He just wasn't what the Avs needed or wanted to deal with.
Drouin is a completely different situation as a UFA and pure reclamation project.

I'm surprised I have to explain this, but Drouin hasn't scored more than 7 goals since 2019, and he's had other issues along the way as well. He's clearly a reclamation project.
If Drouin puts up 15 goals next season, watch the contract he then signs.
