If any team is looking at Meier as a pure rental then they can always turn around and offer him up at the draft. Most of the teams if not all that saw him as something more than just a rental ought to be still interested

Exactly, you have to give up a boatload to get him but if he needs to be dealt at the draft you get a boatload for him

I like the player and potential impact - but it’s a trade with a high delta and a significant cost with too many variables. Too risky. I hope the Leafs look elsewhere.

I mean it's Possible, but that would definitely have to be centered around two 1sts and Knies for the Blues to look at trading their two top value rentals to one team. Then more added value from the Leafs for the Blues taking on all of Kerfoot, Engvall, and Holl for cap reasons.

It would definitely be a Hail Mary down by 5 with 10 seconds left on the clock move.

Edit: I don't think that Toronto would, or even should do a deal like that. I'm just saying that the Blues shouldn't have any really interest in doing a deal like that unless they are getting full value for Both players, and trading both to a single team would end up with the Blues losing value on one of them at least.

Selling teams don't get "added value" for taking on expiring contracts to make the cap work.

That's simply a reality of doing business and of absolutely no consequence to the Blues.

If I were the Leafs I would condition the shit out of the deal. Maybe Blues management is as sure as their fans that ROR will be huge in the playoffs.

If the Blues position on ROR is that any deal with the Leafs MUST include Knies with the Leafs insisting on keeping Knies then can the two teams still find a trade like Barbashev or Acciari going to the Leafs for a non-Knies return?

Sure... but I don't think Barbashev has 1st round pick type of upside / valuation.

I’ll take Barby and ROR for 2023 1St, Knies and next years 2nd

I think most fans on both sides can agree that the Leafs probably wouldn't include Knies in an ROR trade.

This year's first + something else, the far more likely package.

So how is it that the addition of Barbashev, who's probably worth a 2nd and a prospect, makes it so that the Leafs are trading both Knies and their 1st!?!

How much at-the-draft value is Meier really going to have?

A team has to either capitulate to his demands, offer him a $10m 1-year deal, or let him walk.

Meier i

Meier is the Las thing your team needs. You need two way play. Defensive minded offense men built for the playoffs. You have enough scoring now you need players to match up against teams best lines and shut them down.
He's really not. We need physicality up front and on the back. You can never have too much offense so that's just silly.

Your clichés are fun and all but we're a top defensive team. Defense has never been our playoff issue. It's been clutch scoring.

Thanks for telling us what we need though....

You got a handful of different team fans here clamoring for him. Most of them want Meier long term. So I'd say Timo would garner a lot of interest once the season is over

Obviously everyone wants Meier long term. If Bo Horvat hits July 1st, there will be a lineup of teams banging down his door.

Similarly, there will be a lot of teams interested in Meier.

That doesn't mean it makes sense for a GM to part with an astronomical package to obtain his negotiating rights... the value of those negotiating rights is tempered by the fact that he can take a $10m qualifier.

Can always allow his agent to talk to other teams
More teams may jump into the bidding once the season is over

Of course, once July 1st hits, Meier is free to talk with any team he wishes.

All those teams in the bidding are going to raise his contract value to a point that limits his trade value.

I think the money will be about the same where ever he ends up.

Then Meier will chose his destination based on where he wants to play.

This isn't a "normal" RFA situation where the player has limited bargaining because he needs arbitration or a bridge to get to UFA.

$10m is a very generous qualifier to take him there.

I don't know if Meier has any non trade clauses. But yes in the end it's up to any player to decide if he wants to play for whatever team

He has an "effective" one with his qualifying offer.

If he's not sure about the destination the Sharks want to send him to, best course of action would be to simply play out the year on his $10m qualifier.

Again, he holds all the cards because nobody wants to pay him $10m for this year. That substantially limits his trade value this summer.

He's really not, the guy is a finisher, and that's what the Leafs need, the Leafs came 1 goal away from beating both Montreal and Tampa, literally 1 goal away from beating both.

Now in Montreal's case you could point to the John Tavares injury and say if he isn't kneed in the skull they win that series and You'd be right

But in Tampa's case they fell short for 2 major reasons.

#1 putting together 2 good games in a row was impossible for Jack Campbell he couldn't do it.

#2 they needed 1 more guy that could bury literally 1 more puck.

So yes they do need a Meier, ROR, Tarasenko, Bertuzzi somebody that can bury 1 more puck.

Agree for the most part. But do you think Brodie staying healthy for the playoffs is key? Otherwise, who do you pair with Rielly without disrupting the cohesiveness of the other 4?

Lol we will see. Friedman is saying there are multiple teams vying for both ror and tarasenko. This is a sellers market and with multiple buyers that's the price. Dubas is on the hot seat and if he doesn't perform he is fired. So you can guarantee he will make a drastic move
We have no idea what kind of market it is. Nobody has made a significant trade yet and there are plenty of teams looking to sell. I am sure the asks are extremely high right now though.

This has potential to be the worst deadline in NHL history. I feel like nobody is going to get moved...

It's funny how the guys on Overdrive talked about ROR last night and said the same things I said.

* How can you not worry about the Folingo factor in terms of paying the price to get him and he is not 100%.
* ROR is not in his 20's anymore and he wasn't having a good season before he got the broken foot.

To be honest, I hope that he does provide the impact we think he can.... if the Leafs trade for him. I just don't get how some fans want to completely ignore any potential negatives.

If the bottom 10 teams don't play nice in helping the top 10 teams with their cap space, it might be. I have no doubt that GM's on buyer teams are talking to them now in terms of what it cost to use their cap space.

Teams like the Leafs and Canes have an advantage in terms of Patch and Muzzin on LTIR and space they can use.

It is a very fair comparison / legitimate concern. Guys who play the way ROR & Foligno do, don't tend to age particularly well.

ROR maybe doesn't carry quite the same risks, as he's been reasonably healthy over the last few years, and a broken foot isn't as much of a "problem" as a nagging hip, back, or knee.

Overall though... this deadline seems to have a lot of intrigue...

In the East... If you're Toronto or Tampa, you're certainly scared of each other, and then even more scared knowing Boston likely awaits in the 2nd round.

If you're New York or New Jersey; I think you view this year as an opportunity to maybe finally go on a deep run. The Canes are deep, but beatable. The Penguins & Caps, certainly getting up there in age and have reasonable holes in the roster... but again, I don't think you're that afraid of anyone in the Metro side of the bracket.

Meanwhile in the West, it seems to be wide open with Colorado seemingly being a shell of their former selves.

Sorry but a foot injury that will be long healed by game 1 and a back injury are not the same

Last night Morgan played with Liligren. Worked out ok. Would I upgrade Holl or add a Schenn type? If the price works sure. The two things aren't mutually exclusive.
