Is Morgan Rielly a Maple Leaf next season?

Unfortunately I don't think Reilly will be here next year because Dubas won't admit his overspending on our RFA's was a HUGE mistake and will instead try to deal Reilly away to make the cap work instead of doing the obvious and trading Marner
Yep right on .. Mitch at 7M is fine for skills he has .. Rielly around 5.5-6M is fine too .. we could have kept both if we did what Isles did with Barzal bridge him around 7M for 3-4 years (Mitch has never been as good a player as Barzal never ever ever) .. but Dubie way overpaid to CAP and now team can't bring in guys who can carry it to victory

Rielly has been a model Leaf his whole career here. I'm not sure how they find a way to sign him, but my current hope is they do. If anything, we need to keep Morgan and add a big d ala Jones or Hamilton, even at the cost of one of the big 4, just to even things out a bit.

LeBrun speculation from his article in The Athletic.

But it’s always going to come down to one thing: Yes, Rielly loves being a Maple Leaf and would take a bit less to remain one. But the dollar figures have to make sense. He’s earning $5 million a year. He’s worth at least the $6.5 million AAV Torey Krug got in St. Louis last fall, if not more, depending on term.

LeBrun: Which defencemen could change addresses, or stay put, this upcoming offseason?

Personally I think Rielly at $6.5 million would be good value. Just right for what he brings.

I'd be looking for more defense than he brings. And he's a good chip to get it.

I wouldn't be against a move like that. My reasoning for wanting to re-sign Rielly are that he could come in at a potentially manageable cap number. A guy like Hamilton or (ugh) Jones, would come in at least $1.5-$2 million more on the cap based on LeBrun's estimate, and this organization thanks to their own f*** ups needs all the cap space they can get. Rielly has also shown he's one of the few players that gets the playoffs and actually steps up his play when the games matter most. Though he is a key piece of a shite powerplay and he's inconsistent defensively during the regular season. Finding a guy for similar money who's a defensive stalwart could be done, but our PP would have to then rely on either a raw Sandin. Or Muzzin could take over, at least he's got a cannon of a shot.
