Player Discussion Ridly Greig (LW) 28th Overall

Why was he benched in the third, or did he get injured. Even in the second, wasn’t a regular shift I thought.

The "overripe in the AHL" concept was a big thing in the late 90's early 00's, but back then, it was a completely different league. You had Bobby Holik, Ken Daneyko, etc, waterskiing behind players every game, so it was next to impossible to play until you put on weight and physically matured.

Today, that's not the case. It's way easier to play as a 20-year-old who weighs 175lbs.

Not saying the AHL is not useful, it can be when you need to work on specific skills (skating, etc). But for the guys with high-end talent whose only minus is size? It's not as important as it used to be.

You don't need to develop players like the Red Wings used to in the modern NHL.

My money is on Greig playing at least 60 games at the NHL level next year and having a Seth Jarvis/Dawson Mercer-like impact.

I don't doubt that he could play in the NHL next year but I don't see much benefit.

To me go to the AHL and continue to grow his offensive game. If he can do that and carve out a top 6 role we will have stolen one of the better players of the draft.

Right now he is a sure bet to be a bottom 6 guy, lets not rush him like we did Lazar or others. (not saying he is Lazar)

Until I see Grieg on the ice tomorrow night, colour me skeptical on the whole, "precautionary reasons" thing. This wouldn't be the first time we were told that a guy was being pulled for, "precautionary reasons", only to find out subsequently that he's out for a few weeks.

Related, the Grieg injury is why some GMs didn't want their top prospects going to an August tournament. This board would absolutely melt down, and for good reason, if Jake Sanderson was there and suffered an injury. You can argue that there is some benefit to Grieg playing top line minutes in an international tournament in terms of his development, but the downside is injury risk with NHL camp a month away. (If Grieg is in the warmup tomorrow night, I'll happily come on here and eat my plate of crow.)

Ottawa got Ridly Greig from the Pageau trade - the other piece Ottawa got for Pageau was Kelven.

Dorion’s vision here deserves a lot of credit - many here were critical of picks like Pinto, Klevin, Boucher and Greig when skilled players like Kaliyev or Silinger were available.

This teams top 6 is settled and needs a whole lot more of Dorion going “off the board with physicality ” than him setting for the consensus mid level skilled guys.

Well, you need all kinds of players: skill, grit, etc. I guess Dorion added some skill to the roster by adding Debrincat and Giroux. I guess we should probably not overlook this and include it.

What's QDP? Had a notice one of my posts in here was deleted with reason being QDP...

No idea what I could have said that would get deleted.

Anyway hope he is good enough to play tonight but if not at least get healthy for the Fins on Monday.

More on topic, I also hope Greig is healthy. I missed the last game and didn't see where he might have gotten hurt. The fact that he was on the bench seems like a good sign though.

Pinto, Klevin, Boucher, I agree, but Greig was always skilled and perceived as such. It was pretty evident if you watched him play in his draft year too.

I never had an issue with the selection of Pinto, Klevin or Greig.

He is listed at 6' on the IIHF website now. Needs to put a bit of man muscle on that frame and he will be a force.

Can't teach the kind of toughness and attitude he has. If he can get to between 190 and 200lbs he will finally have some size to back it up.

We had people screaming about Pinto VS Kaliyev and of course who can forget the tweety posts about the goalie who apparently had a better breakout pass than Klevin.

Most of that was just the Anti Dorion/ I’m Smarter than Dorion members at their loudest point.

Are you commending the selection of Boucher over Sillinger?

I’m commending the selection to acquire elite 3rd liners vs guys for best suited for PP3.

I hope Boucher is the right guy … but we don’t need mid level first rounders waiting for injuries to become useful on PP2 - we need elite two way players capable of shutting down teams best players.

Sillinger was at 19 years old super effective for Canada at the World Championships and was on their PK. come on...

I’m genuinely not sure if you’re kidding or if you’re just a contrarian. They likely could’ve had Sillinger at 10 and Boucher at 39. I’ve generally liked PD’s drafting and have loved his moves this offseason, but that was absolutely not a commendable pick.
