I agree. Point was made that because Dubas was so generous then, feeling he would go higher later. I think Marner’s team has erred, his name is marketable and they’ve hurt the brand. My only thought was reality wouldn’t really hit until camp started and the pressure mounted, internally and externally.

I could understand what they were their thinking if they thought things could play out that way but i always believed a lot of his bargaining strength was how beloved by the fan base he is

Sign something huge, go to the presser and say I could have fought for more but love being here and didn't want to risk leaving so took some off the top and become the most beloved Leaf of all time

This team made the play0ffs by 4 points last year with Marner as their top scorer. If Marner spends the year in Switzerland (ie not traded) then leafs can kiss the playoffs goodbye. Sure they will have a bit of LTIR space they can use - what UFAs are available to sign today to make up for marner?

Its fun to suggest that Dubas tell Marner to go take a ............

But the truth is he needs Marner signed for this team to have any success and if he wants to keep his job. Marner spending the season that Dubas as finally assembled a okay d-core for in Europe would probably cost him his job.

Well he said nothing publicly. There was a lot of behinds the stuff that he at least allegedly did, and way too much smoke for there not to be at least a little bit of fire.

However I can at least respect that he did keep it private, and that he did have more of a point to go after the most money he could get than Marner did at the start of this whole debacle. Now... Well Marner's security is gone, it now looks like it is almost confirmed that he is out of the race for captaincy (even for an 'A'), and top dollar is maybe the only thing left he can really fight for.
