His love for the team is huge. Unfortunately it seems his ego is bigger. The Shannaclan should have been stroking it the moment they drafted him.

Only gives him more of a reason to ask for big money: "Oh well you were saying I was the next Gretzky... Pay me like it".

Well you obviously have no clue what bad faith negotiating is. Because you don’t like it, doesn’t make it bad faith.

Whatever. Lack of professionalism then. Semantics. If you can't see that, you have no clue.

Oh btw - Negotiating in bad faith means you have a hidden agenda and often an unfair advantage over the agreement. It can also mean that you intend to do business deceptively and pretend otherwise

Nice to hear there was progress. I think the past 24h really push talks forward.

I'd expect this done by this time next week if I was a betting man.

Guys forget about the Hometown discounts and love of city. This is business, plain and simple. Nothing wrong with that, but call it what it is.

There is only one player on this team who can rightfully say he came to Toronto because he wants to win here, and that is Johnny T. He could have made more elsewhere, and he could have even had been on a better team when he rejected the Lightning offer.

So. If you are going to choose a jersey strictly on who is here because he has a nostalgic love for the team and city, Tavares is your guy. Even better when he performed as he did. He's a quiet performer and professional.

For the rest of them, it's strictly business. I don't begrudge them for this. However, they and their handlers have to understand, fans will view the transaction in the same light unless you win. If Johnny T goes through struggles, Leaf fans will be more forgiving. For Nylander and now even Marner, it won't be the same.

These are young players, they rely on good, sound decision makers around them. They had best give a damn about Marner. He has to live this, and become a man in this city. If they are looking to squeeze a few extra bucks, it will cost him more in endorsements alone.

Gee, I don't know. Threats, lies, innuendo??

Lies? Threats, as you call them, are a basic part of negotiating.
So when everyone says the Leafs should offer one deal and tell him if he doesn’t accept then he sits - would that be a threat and bad faith?

Now Friedman saying the AAV on a 6 year deal will be lower than 11.

I wonder if the 6x10.5 thing LeBrun mentioned is an actual possibility

If it's a lose/lose for the Leafs and fans, the real winner out of all of this is Mess.

You have that backwards, as I'm a diehard Leafs fans since the 1960s so the more $$ that Marner gets the worse it is for my favourite childhood team.

I would want Marner on a market comparable contract not a new market setting one.

I'm disappointed by the news that $11 mil is the floor, but not really surprised all things considered as I claimed last summer after the Tavares signing that Matthews and Marner would draw their next contract by hitching their wagons to his.

I'm very concerned my Leafs might struggle to remain competitive with 3 players each making $11 mil and 3 x top 5 highest in the NHL because of too few using up too much cap space.

I'm cheering for what is best for the crest on the front not name on the back nor the person in the GM chair. So fans cheering for Marner to win big or supporting and defending over-payments seem to more concerned about the GM or player even if its detrimental to the team or its success. That seems backwards for those that are true Leaf fans to me.

Being mad at Marner I get, by asking well above market, being mad at Dubas for overpaying I get, being mad at Me I don't get, because I want what is best for my team not the player nor the GM as I a fan like the rest of us.

Its gonna be super awkward for all the ppl who have ripped Marner this past summer when he signs in the next couple days.

why? I don't get this kind of post. They have been petty and greedy all summer, but no one was ever disputing his talent so once he is signed how come people cant be happy the player is back but not the contract (if its overpaid) or the way they negotiated?

I think the Marner camp has already made it super awkward.
Any contract that makes Willy’s deal seem like a steal is just crazy.
Can you imagine meeting strangers and saying hi I’m a pro hockey player and yes I make more then Sidney Crosby and double what Gretzky ever made.
1 million for every ten points per season and turning the deal down.....gross

Why? You can like the player but hate their camp's tactics

Hating his tactics? Is that what you call it?

You (along with others) just spent basically your entire summer on here drumming up hysteria and along the way insulting each of Marner, his family, his agent, and media members reporting on the negotation.

I said it back in June... 6 x 10.16M and I think it gets done.

That would be a 600k overpay but at this point, it at least gives the Leafs a chance to rebuild some trade value. As long as it is frontloaded so it is easy to dump his butt on a budget team like Ottawa if it makes the team better. Like Nylander, overpayment = no trade security/don't expect to be here if we get an offer that contributes to the Leafs' success more than you do.

Marner camp is getting pummelled and the pressure is all on him

Yeah those leaks yesterday destroyed them and I'm sure it was a PR nightmare. I'm actually shocked Ferris didn't attempt to at least deny the claims through a couple radio hits to defend Marner and their position. That tells me all I need to know to be perfectly honest.
