Return for Matthews in a trade

So you disagree that other players and their agents would view it it negatively and they would share your opinion on the subject? If you are disagreeing with my point then I guess that is what you are saying. Hard to imagine players and agents supporting something that is clearly against their best interests.
I think some players would view it poorly while others would see it as a positive in that the team is doing whatever it thinks is in their best interest to win no matter how difficult it is.

IMO, I don’t think they are as down on Tavares as some fans are and will happily ride the contract out before offering a reasonable extension.

For the actual topic of the thread. Matthews could easily be traded through 5.5 million retention after bonus. That would he 350 k from Arizona or Chicago etc. my trades that make sense are

1.) Anaheim: mctavish, one of the d prospects (zellewwger?) 2nd (like 33rd)

2.) Carolina: necas. Pesce. 1st 3rd.

3.) Dallas: Johnston marchment 1st. Or something like dellandrea marchment Harley 1st

4.) detroit: edvinsson. Raymond. 1st

5.) colorado: Bryam 1st 1st (would be a 1 year rental probably )

6.)La: byfield, villardi, ardvisson /Spence

7.) rangers: laf, chtytil, Schneider, 1st

I have no idea if these are good. I just threw them out there literally because zero people were talking about potential returns

Stay away from vilardi

Yeah, no interest at all in Gabe Vilardi. The fact that Colby Armstrong even floated his name out there tells me his credentials to cover the sport should be pulled.

Can someone explain why?

23 year old 6 5 right handed c

What’s the downside?
He’s no where near Matthews. But we aren’t getting. A comparable player back

If Matthews is going to LA, Kempe better be coming back. Plus a D.
Then try to land a C like Sheif or Dubois from Winnipeg.

It would be hard to come up with a trade that would return full and equal value for Matthews in trade.

Any trade would have to be quantity for quality and then the team that gets the best player in the deal often wins it.

If the Leafs were heading into rebuild mode, than and futures trade could be worked out, but that is not Leafs desire.

If Mathews sees the fanbase turn on JT after 5 years because a PPG isn't good enough, you don't think he can see for himself what being loyal to Toronto means?
The team needs to honor that contractand the fans need to show some class

Nothing to do with ppg lol
Pretty sure Matthews realizes that Tavares is detrimental to his chances of winning at this point and would understand
Or the Leafs can just tinker with the defense and roll it back with same squad because it's more "classy" that way lmfao 🤣

Nylander and Marner are alot closer as players than you think. Also, Sandin/Lilijegren aren't 7th D. If you're getting all that for Marner, you take it. You're delusional to not do that. It's incredible value.
I think with Marner's penalty killing and overall x factor, he's quite a bit more valuable than Nylander (who's an awesome player). I said Sandin was a #4, Lilly is being played as a #7 on the Leafs... which isn't exactly the best D core at this point.

Byfield + Clarke + Vilardi

#2 + #8 + #11 (all unproven unkowns) for #1 (with a 2 rockets, a hart and lindsay)
Clarke, a solid second liner, and a bust, nah.

Add some picks and take away Byfield.

It's best for the team if Tavares goes out the "core 4", do you agree?
If your answer is yes, than it doesn't matter what's in it for Tavares... but if anything, what will be in it for him would be he gets to go to a team that actually wants him... or he can just stay and continue dragging the team down for the next 2 years because the previous GM gave him a full NMC 🤦🏻‍♂️ or let's just get rid of Marner, Matthews or Nylander because it would be supposedly such bad etiquette/optics to try and honestly improve the team by asking him to waive 🤷🏻‍♂️
It's really the best way forward imho

Sometimes if you really love something, you gotta let it go...

Yes I agree, that's not even up for debate .100% of HFboards agree and that happens once every ten thousand years.

32 teams bidding for his service and Leafs turned out to be the team that actually wants him the most.

Let me rephrase it, instead of what's in it for JT ( and let's face it - nothing), ask:
why would he say yes to the waving right he specifically asked for during his contract negotiation?
He is not just a hockey player, but also a human being.

Do you want him to move out of the fancy house he got in his hometown? Do you want him to diminish his chances of winning the Stanley Cup? How can you convince him, someone wants him more (7x11 NMC is like a marriage certificate, we love him the most and we signed the paper to make it official :))?

Ignoring he was signed before Marner, Matthews, and Nylander, so it's hardly his fault their contracts expire before his.

All of this so he can officially take the blame and mark himself an anchor player?

Again, I'm all for it, but I don't see the angle.

There is nothing you could tell me in his position. Call me useless and speak of a bright future in Arizona. The answer is: No, thank you.

Again, Treliving didn't sign that contract with Tavares...
He can still live in Toronto other than during hockey season if he's traded...
He would say yes to a trade because circumstances and team have now changed half a decade later and if he loves the team, he'll do what's best for tge TEAM
Like you said, 100% percent of fans agree and realize that out of the main cast and characters Tavares would make the most sense to move for so many reasons... So I'm guessing Tavares himself sees this too

Well, Marner will pass the puck to the main return piece off the hypothetical trade: example McTavish, Byfield or perhaps UFA O'Reilly...
Obviously first choice would be to resign Matthews first and foremost...

No need to trade Marner or Nylander to maintain Matthews so I have no idea what you're talking about... it's Tavares that has to go, I'm so surprised everybody can't see that o_O

Matthews has to be traded pre July 1st if he won't sign before that date imho but I would prefer he signs, but that's his choice...

Thank god NHL teams don't hire random guys off of HFB's to be GMs lmfao
Just interns that waste our AM years :)

You guys are probably the type that have a hard time breaking up with your girlfriend's... but would much rather just act like d**k heads until she leaves you lol

Too my p***ies on the Leafs to win in the Playoffs and Tavares is the biggest of them all lol

Traveling not signing his contract means nothing. Circumstances are pretty much the same, with the core intact.

He won't be playing half the games at home, even you must understand the difference between that and any other team.

No idea what makes you think he loves the team so much, man wanted all the money an ASKED FOR NMC . You keep ignoring every possible context, just to suit narrative you cant explain.

You are GM: Instead of repeating your tough guy act, give us the conversation you would have as GM with JT. Please keep in mind, Trevling is legally obligated to honer the NMC. It is not a matter of telling PPG player to know his place. Go

Just give me the script :D.

The one that tells JT he sucks and reminds him he loves the team so much he wants to leave to help him.

To use your rethoric, don't be a p***y and put down the conversation you would have with Tavares.

If Tavares said no to waiving (and I think he definitely would), then what?

There's not much to do... lock up Matthews & Nylander to long term deals.
For cap space and asset management considerations, I would trade Brodie for futures/young player before he's lost to UFA in 24'
Buyout or trade Murray if possible

Look to sign some UFAs players this year that help in the playoffs, bring team toughness and defense eg: O'Reilly, Dumba, Domi, Gudas, Perry, Schenn, Monahan, Wood etc

That's my plan B

From any team who wants to trade for Matthews:

-A 1st in 2023
-A top Center prospect
-A depth forward or defenseman
-A 2nd in 2023

I’d take a top ten number 1 Dman and a tough hard hitting 3rd liner and just let William play center.

Lindros Trade to the flyers gave Quebec a great haul. Fopo wasn't a half bad player alone but getting the other elements was just gravy. Lindros was the better piece but if the leafs got that kind of return for a known commodity sign me up. Lindros hadn't even established himself like AM has.
