If you're matthews would you leave?

For me, heck ya. There's plenty of better cities with less scrutiny from media/fans etc.

I love the Leafs...but if I were rich, I ain't living near Toronto, sorry.
If you mean demanding to be traded this off-season, that would mean his new team would be weakened (assuming he cared about that) due to assets coming this way. He'd be better off going after 23-24 if he really wanted to leave.

This is my take as well.

Born in California and raised in Arizona. Those Cali teams would be lining up for you to head out there. Less of a spotlight than in Toronto. I wouldn't blame him at all if he wanted to go play in the US. I would too.

If you are in it for the money Canadian hockey markets are not for you.
I mean, Matthews already made 60+ million. And he could agree to an 8-year, $100 mil deal tomorrow that comes with a $12.6 mil cap hit -- a win, win for both him and the Leafs. If $160+ million in a Canadian market isn't "great money" I don't know what is.

I wasn't even considering this until Colby Armstrong referenced it with Kyper -- Matthews makes American Dollars and lives in Toronto. I'm not sure what the current conversion is, but that's absolutely grotesque money lol.

Eichel at $10M for 8 years. Is he $3M-$4M lesser of a player than AM?
AM don't be greedy, it's not a good look on people. Make your money in other ways not on the back of your teammates
Do your commercials, buy some bitcoin whatever but understand we can't improve this team without you and the other two making some compromises.
If unwilling then we know the true character of the lot of you.

You cant justify 14 Million on a 3 year deal.`There is no way to hold this overpaid 4 together and win a cup. I`m not even sure Mathews is a top 10 player if you want a cup. A good goalie is worth $6 million plus and we need an upgrade on defense and grit just to hit round 2 and be as good as Seattle, an expansion team with a payroll of how much? By the way, based on playoffs Eichel is better than Mathews. I dont think Treveling is gonna bite on $14.

MLSE might just cave and order Treliving to sign Matthews for whatever he wants. Of course that’s what got them into this mess in the first place. They think they need a marquis player to market the team.

I respectfully disagree.

They need to win in the playoffs. If they can get a haul for Matthews then by all means trade him. A couple of first round picks, top prospect, D man and top 6 forward.

if he wants go its his right .austin looks at vegas and maybe he see that this core 4 crap has to to build a big ruged mobile team
if he is holding the leafs up by needing to know about marner the whole thing is dysfunctional
one thing EVERYONE can see the leafs are not built to win in the playoffs .whos to say a more balanced attack wont get better results

MSLE namely tannebaum has orchestrated this whole post playoff drama.it started with dubas being canned and who knows whos ear the board has
could be treliving giving an outside perspective and taking off the core 4 rose colored glasses
as most of us know ,the core 4 crap leads to jealousy and finger pointing
according to the exit meeting rumors all points show 19 other players are tired of it

The issue is drai didn't do squat, it was and has always been 97. Comparing auston to drai is basically comparing him to Kevin Stevens.
Drai career playoff points per 82 = 127
career playoff goals per 82= 51

Matthews ppg/82= (lol) 72
Matthews pgp/82= (lol) 36

Matthews is a 7 million dollar player in the post season eating up 11.6 of our cap. Wants to be paid as the best player in the word. He’s a PROBLEM.

Is there literally ANY precedent for this? In the entire cap era? Has a top 5 player in the league ever done a 3 year deal on their first ufa contract?

Like, this is insane. At what point is this bullshit on dubas? Our rookie gm had no idea what he was doing, dealt with the core with kid gloves, and created a hopeless sense of entitlement.

Friedman even said many coaches/players spoke of it in post season interviews. How the organization has a borderline cult like treatment of the core 4. And look what it’s done. It’s a freaking disgrace.

This is what intrigues me.. the trickle down effect to the other players. Nevermind you rotate a third of the roster or more every year and cant build any sort of continuity - it could create such a divided clique culture.. as soon as just a little resentment comes in and you arent 100% allnin for each other it can spread like ground fire

And that's what we see time and time again in the playoffs. They don't have each others back. They don't appear as a well-bonded "family". The "other 19" don't have the core 4's back. And the core 4 only care about themselves. It's selfish hockey we see every post season.

And so...damn...bland

It bugs me so much how this team is so stale

Vegas or Cali seems the best bets for him

For the first 5 years of his contract absolutely he was
A great playoff run doesnt change your AAV substantially

Unless you were happy with Dave bolands contract
Or you think binnington is worth 6 million
Or you think khodobin shouldn’t be in the ahl

Exactly, if there’s a trade out there that makes the Leafs better you make it, I’d trade god himself if it helped the team. I could care less if some fan’s were butt hurt because their idol was moved, and so should any LEAF fan imo………

If he "bites", they hired the wrong person.

The Leafs have to remember that Marner is going to want what Matthews gets so...

They can't feed both these pigs because the money they save once JT's contract ends is needed to better the team, NOT give Matthews and Marner a raise.

As I posted after they lost to Florida...

Matthews placed 10th in Selke voting just last year and has some of the best takeaway and defensive metrics amongst Centers in hockey all while being a 50+ goal scorer. Pretty unicorn like if you ask me. Matthews had like a 10 game playoff point streak going and was arguably the best if not second best player in round 1 this season. But we're going to discredit that because of round two. It's really a what have you done for me lately with this fanbase.

When McDavid makes 16 million on his next contract without having won a cup I hope we have the same criticism for him for being greedy. McDavid signed his contract a long time ago, when the collector comes due he will be the highest paid player in hockey.
I bet you that he won't become the highest paid player when his deal in Edmonton is up. I think if he has not won by that point and doesn't see winning in his future there...he leaves and also leaves money on the table to go somewhere to win. He knows his legacy will be tarnished by being one of the very few superstars never to win a cup and will not be grabbing every dime out there like our guys do. He even said this year that every dollar more that he makes takes away from the teams ability to ice a better team. Haven't heard that from our "group" yet...nor will I be expecting it.
