After seeing the return now. Does anyone think a deal without Demar or Kyle was possible? You have to think Masai tried that route no? OG would most certainly be a main piece.
I think there's a lot of Raptors fans who think DeMar has a lot more value than he actually does. No team is winning with Demar as "the guy", he's as one dimensional as they come

Okay... and?

Raps gave him 27 million dollars a year (one of the highest contracts when it was signed) only for DD to play like shit in the playoffs. He was better on the bench than in the game in the 4th quarters.

When you don’t show up to big games, this is what happens.

Just out of curiosity, if Kawhi has made it clear he plans to go to the Lakers in free agency, why on earth would the Lakers part with any significant assets to trade for him this year? Unless, of course, it is to free up $$$?

It's a steal for the Raps if he stays. If he leaves after a year, the narrative changes.

No doubt he leaves after this year. Regardless, it was only a matter of time before the narrative flips to the new guard, with or without Kawhi. The old core will be too old to assist him better than freaking LeBron would in LA. Plus, they have a young squad as well.

After next season, it is rebuild time. Lowry, Ibaka, and JV will only have one more year. It is probably going to be a daunting task to get any value in return for them outside of maybe JV.

Yes, it was possible, but likely would have require both OG and Poeltl and the 1st to only be protected top-5, which was rightfully turned down by Masai.

I think Masai jumped at the opportunity to trade DeMar. The more I think about it, the more it looks like he was just dumping the contract and either risking it for Kawhi re-signing, or rebuilding around their fantastic young guys (Siakam, OG, FVV).

Indeed. He isn't even an All-Star in the Western Conference.

He's a good player that can be a supplementary piece to an elite talent..he can't run a team to a title though.

It'll pretty much have to tbh. Everything we have will be expiring and that's the logic behind the taking one last real hard swing at the fence and I respect that. As of right now this team isn't good enough for title or bust though and I think it would have made more sense to move DD for futures next season because we have a lot of young role players but outside of OG who isn't anywhere near a lock we have no real young talent to build around. So what we are doing realistically is taking one last swing for the fences and unless everything comes up Raptors we are effectively extending the depth of our upcoming rebuild

I can see how people are fine with that approach, not sure I am

I take it you haven't been keeping up with Siakam this offseason?

I completely disagree. I'm not sure how this makes sense from a basketball standpoint at all. If Kawhi had even 2 years left I could be sold on that. Masai has a lot of work to do because as of right now this team isn't near good enough to be in a title or bust season. We don't know if Kawhi is even going to be as good as he was or if he wants to be here.

Of course we could resign him like George but its so unlikely at this point you have to look at it as if you know he's walking

we were already a damn good team, and we just upgraded in a massive way.

AND no lebron in the east anymore.

NBA finals are a good bet as of now....and now we have an MVP who might actually give us a legit shot in those finals, too.

The Raptors likely wanted to send out either Demar or Kyle's salary, so it's unlikely the deal happens without one of them included.

I'm quite surprised one of OG or Siakam isn't going back. Poetl is a nice piece, and we'll miss him, but I think hanging onto OG and PS was definitely a win for the Raps.

Those aren't rebuild around pieces. OG could maybe be if he does what Demar did with himself but after this season we'll be in the tank for a long time. Buuut there is some hope, Kawhi has lost a ton of money already and would lose a ton more if he doesn't resign here. Guess we'll see if moving to LA is worth 50million to this guy

They're all good young core pieces that provided a lot of value last season, and will hopefully continue to improve. Sure they're not superstars, but neither is DeMar.

Kawhi is, and I like the risk Masai took to see if there's any chance we can re-sign him long term. If not, I still think this deal is a win.

That’s it. Best team in the regular season and then hardly convincing against the Wizards and no fight against the Cavs. It was a yearly routine of disappointment.

Wow I’m sad for DD :(... I know it’s a business and he gets paid $$$$ but the fact he committed to the Raps and only to see him moved.

I think business wise a good move ridding a big contract BUT have to feel bad for him.

He’s clearly not happy from his quotes.

This.

Bad trade in my view.

I agree! You have to keep players that are good, and, want to play in Canada! JMHO.

In a year, the Raps will have nothing to show for trading him!

EDIT: wait a moment...just Poeltl and a top 20 protected pick? Annnnnnndddd Danny Green is coming too? Value for value, this is a pretty damn good trade. Cold as hell still.
My exact words. At first I was like are you for real? f*** this.

Theeeeen I saw the return.

Now i'm sold.

If somehow Kawhi fails his physical and the trade is off, DD is going to want the next flight out ASAP.
