Raptors Discussion: REPORT: Raptors trade DeRozan, Poeltl, Protected 1st to Spurs for Leonard, Green

Sad to see a guy so invested in the city like DeMar go, but this also sets up the future well whether Kawhi stays or goes. Now the Raps can afford a max on the open market (Kawhi, Butler, Kyrie, Thompson as examples). Need to move Powell’s contract to keep JV in the fold too.
Opening up that cap space for a certain Greek Freak potentially?

The most loyal player that we have ever had in perhaps any of Toronto's sports team traded for a guy who is literally the antithesis of that for an organization that has pretty much been the class of the NBA over the past 20 years. I didn't think it was possible or any bit logical to hold contempt with the Spurs. You really think he’s gonna open his ear to a rookie coach, when he wouldn’t do so for Pop? Maybe the reigning COTY might have had a better chance with him.

Second, you cannot understate enough how much this guy does not want to be here. This man wanted to go to the Lakers soooo bad that:
1. he was willing to pass on his opportunity for a supermax 5 years @ 221 mil with the Spurs to give him self a max possible contract of 4 years @ 141 mil with the Lakers (all of this is provided he suffers no catastrophic injury before free agency...all the more reason for him to try to stay on the sidelines).
2. Further than pay, this guy was on a team that could contend every bit as much as us with him in the lineup. He has already led that franchise to a ring. Simply winning another clearly won't be enough to butter his bread. He wants to win for his hometown. He wants that glory.

Third, if the motive was truly to dish off Demar’s contract and set ourselves up to rebuild if this Kawhi experiment blows up, we are probably shooting ourselves in the foot with whatever is going the other way.

EDIT: wait a moment...just Poeltl and a top 20 protected pick? Annnnnnndddd Danny Green is coming too? Value for value, this is a pretty damn good trade. Cold as hell still.

Sets up the future well? We could have traded DeMar for a young solid player, I would think. We gave up two really good pieces to try and lose in the NBA Finals lol which is going to be awful getting there and then starting a rebuild the next season

Some people here care more about "loyalty" than actually winning.

It's actually hilarious that people are actually criticizing this deal. Clearly some people don't know much about Kawhi and Green

The deal objectively is fine, but feels bad man to let go of Derozan in this fashion after he's embraced and been so loyal to Toronto and Canada. Especially after he reportedly was told earlier in the summer he wasn't going anywhere.

It's not a great look for the franchise. Hopefully it doesn't come back to hurt them going forward. I can't imagine some of the players are too happy about how it shook down.

Just out of curiosity, if Kawhi has made it clear he plans to go to the Lakers in free agency, why on earth would the Lakers part with any significant assets to trade for him this year? Unless, of course, it is to free up $$$?

It's a steal for the Raps if he stays. If he leaves after a year, the narrative changes.

DeMar and Kyle clearly were never going to get it done. Sad to see him go, but he had plenty of chances to change his faith. I'll wait and see what happens with Kawhi long-term (sign & trade next year?) before I judge this.

Ball is good, and the best young asset the Lakers have. His family is fine.

Selfishly, I’d take him in a heartbeat just to see the snowflakes melt.
His family situation is an absolute disaster, it's not fine at all. LaVar has murdered the career of his 2 other sons, playing them in his bull shit league where kids will lose their shot at an education for a quick $.

I'd still take Lonzo on the fact that if he does get traded, it'll be 100% because of Lavar and what EVERYONE will be talking about. He'll have no choice but to turn the volume down.

Not really. It's no longer a steal but it doesn't make it an awful trade or anything.

DeRozan lacks value due to his contract. I also doubt that a rebuild takes place.

Yeah, no.

Let that snow melt, Masai.

Toronto is the Columbus of the NBA.

Hope they can get a good package for Leonard when they are finally forced to face reality and trade him.

C - JV
PF - Ibaka
SF - Leonard
SG - Green
PG - Lowry

Wright
Miles
OG
Siakim
Powell

The Raptors just became one heck of a defensive team (at least with the starting lineup).
Like you said, that starting lineup will be nasty at both ends of the court

After seeing the return now. Does anyone think a deal without Demar or Kyle was possible? You have to think Masai tried that route no? OG would most certainly be a main piece.

It'll pretty much have to tbh. Everything we have will be expiring and that's the logic behind the taking one last real hard swing at the fence and I respect that. As of right now this team isn't good enough for title or bust though and I think it would have made more sense to move DD for futures next season because we have a lot of young role players but outside of OG who isn't anywhere near a lock we have no real young talent to build around. So what we are doing realistically is taking one last swing for the fences and unless everything comes up Raptors we are effectively extending the depth of our upcoming rebuild

I can see how people are fine with that approach, not sure I am
