Raptors Discussion: REPORT: Raptors trade DeRozan, Poeltl, Protected 1st to Spurs for Leonard, Green

A lot of people are upset by this trade because of DeMar's "loyalty" to Toronto.

Let's not forgot he made 28 million a year, money that I'd bet teams weren't exactly lining up to offer him. He was overpaid. He didn't take a discount, he got the top dollar from the team at the time. He didn't take some Tavares discount to play in Toronto. It's a business you say? Yes it is, which is why he was traded.

He didn't show up in the Playoffs. If this was hockey, everyone would be ecstatic he was just dealt for a top-5 player in the league.

Just tired of seeing all this "loyalty" bs. He did a lot for the city, no doubt. When it was contract time, he wasn't exactly taking a "hometown discount"(yes, I know he's from Compton)

LOL this...

“Both DeRozan and Leonard are reportedly unhappy with the move. Sources tell Chris Haynes that Leonard has no interest in playing for the Raptors.”

I’m assuming he means after the upcoming season..we hope lol
George also had no intention of staying in OKC and then.....

I can't tell you how happy I am for this deal overall.

I think its an exceptional basketball deal, and I think its completely reasonable.

I feel for Demar, he's a loyal and wonderful player and it really stings a TON to move on from him, but this is proof that you must give to get.

We have absolutely the #1 contending team in the east right now, with a sweltering team defense and depth for DAYS.

Even if Kawhi leaves in the summer, we have all of our deals expiring at basically the same time and tons of young players with bird rights. We can resign the depth we have and make some plays for some big free agents.

Cap space is valuable in todays league. Demar was a valuble yet flawed piece and I think this is a BRILLIANT move by Masai.

Currently yes absolutely, if OKC makes a few champ runs with PG, then it tips back in their favor.

They got the best player and resigned him.

I disagree wholeheartedly, right now I'd take Oladipo every day and I can't see how they sniff a title in OKC

Yeah I’m curious why SAN Anatonio wouldn’t let teams see the med reports?? Is this normal?
Kawhi Leonard trade: Injury revelation rocks Spurs after Philadelphia 76ers claim
But tensions began to bubble between player and team over the course of a season in which he made just nine appearances while recovering from a troublesome quadriceps injury.

Leonard believed the Spurs’ medical staff misdiagnosed the initial injury, eventually seeking a second opinion away from the team in New York.

The 2014 Finals MVP sought out the help of renowned specialist Dr Jonathan Glashow to help monitor and advise him during the rehabilitation process.

It was a move that raised eyebrows given Dr Glashow’s relationship with the Philadelphia 76ers; the surgeon serves as the team’s chief medical officer.

Having played only nine times in 12 months, teams hoping to trade for Leonard will have question marks over the state of his health given such a lengthy lay-off.

But, speaking on the latest edition of The Woj Pod today, ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski claimed Philadelphia had been handed an advantage – even over the Spurs – in knowing the extent of Leonard’s injuries.

“The other thing is the health – not knowing the medical, not having the [information],” Woj said, describing teams’ reluctance to pull the trigger without knowing Leonard’s status.

“Philly is unique because one of their primary team physicians was the doctor that Kawhi went to for a second opinion in new York which, on the surface people said ‘how can that be?’ but it just is.

“It is very conceivable that Philly has more medical knowledge of Kawhi Leonard than the Spurs do because their doctors had more access to him.”

I don't understand how anybody can be critical of this deal, even if Leonard walks away after the season.

It's not like the Raptors had a lot of options. There weren't seven or eight deals for superstar players lined up for them this summer. It was either this deal or bring back pretty much the same core, with a new coach.

If they brought back the same core and failed in the playoffs yet again, they would be looking at rebuilding the roster next summer anyway. Pretty much the same scenario if Leonard leaves.

Now they can take their shot. If it works, awesome. If not, at least they tried and on with the rebuild that was coming regardless.

Im not talking about the trade. I meant
another other LA guy didnt want to stay with his team but did.

Fair enough and if we resign him we make off like bandits, granted. Its a hope though, let's not let it happening once with a middling star convince us it's likely here. I will hope beyond hope though with the rest of the fans lol

Something I read that was interesting is that Kawhi is all about maxing that show deal with Nike and they just opened their second big store in NA here in Toronto so who knows where this ends up. GO BUY HIS SHOES lol

I find it funny that other NBA players are acting like the Raptors traded Demar for scraps. I feel for the guy, he definitely gave his everything for Toronto and is the #2 player to wear the jersey. But at the end of the day, that everything was, and will never be, enough to get the Raptors over the hump.

KL2 is a legitimate superstar in the NBA. Assuming he reports, the team is much better now, with a legitimate shot at the Finals. People who are upset with this trade are out to lunch.

I don't think it's necessarily about the value of the deal (which the Raps won anyway), but that they apparently told DeMar that he will not be dealt. So yes, the other NBA players are right that the Raps went cold heart and did this, but they also put DeMar into a really good scenario.

Masai must really think he can resign him. Otherwise wouldn't he make a deal to add Kwahi and keep DeMar ?

So Kawhi makes $23m.

If he doesn't pick up his $21m player option for 19-20, then the max the raps can only give him is 4 x $27m.

If he picks up the player option for 19-20, then the raps can offer him 5 x $38m.

Since he was traded, he is no longer eligible for the supermax 5 x $44m.

As a free agent after this year, I believe he can only sign for a max of 5 x ~$30m.

The answer seems pretty obvious: the only way to make a deal to get Leonard without sending all the team's best young talent out the door was to include DeRozan.

The price to get Leonard without including Siakim, OG, Delon, etc was to include DeRozan.

From a purely competitive standpoint, I have no issues with this deal. My only gripe is that if Masai did in fact mislead Demar in the days leading up to this trade, that lacks integrity, and is not an acceptable way to treat the most loyal player in the history of the franchise.
