I don't get it if that's true. Why would Masai pull the trigger on this?

Im not a huge basketball fan esp now with these power teams but the other day i watched the carter effect and i saw how raptors new management team got ridd of carter and seeinf this with derozen now, looks ljke the same shit..... derozen has done so much for this team and the city... he loves it here... sure its a business but at least if trade him trade for a guy who actually wants to play here

I have no idea at all what to make of this. Promising DD he won't be traded and then trading him is not a good look for the franchise, especially DD who has been as loyal and as hard working as perhaps any athlete in Toronto history. And trading him for a one year rental who doesn't even want to be here, how smart can this possibly be? The other side of the coin though is that Leonard is a fantastic player so ... but if they give up DD are they really that much better than the can make noise next year?

We don't know 100% if Kawhi said he doesn't want to play in TO. Do people really think Massai would straight up trade his franchise player for a guy who comes out publicly and states he doesn't want to play here?

Doesn't seem right to me, even American media BS's sometimes ;)

Also, Antetokounmpo(probably butchered that) is a FA in a couple seasons. I heard somewhere during the season that he had this love for TO. Apparently there was a Greek night at one of the games and he was in awe by it. Just speculating, but lots of money to spend next off-season with no Derozon

Must have been this night.

Could a flip be possible?

I know it basically goes against what Masai is planning but could the Spurs just want too much from the Lakers but the Raps are willing to pay the price to flip him there?

Interesting risk to bring in a guy for 1 year who doesnt want to be here but also sat out all of last season

This seems weird....

Wouldn't surprise me if Masai turned around and dealt him to the Lakers (Deng contract, Kuzma, Ingram\Ball), allowing the Lakers\Kawhi\Lebron to get what they want, and Pop to save face.

Also satisfies this wretched fanbase who wanted a rebuild after being swept anyway. Same people crying tears for Demar right now, btw.

I don't care about Derozan. He's an average star; and we will prolong our selves as average as long as he's here. Loyalty doesn't exist in the business world.

This is a good post I saw on Real GM:

Upside:
*Acquire Top 5 player
*Raps could make the finals
*He might end up liking the situation and he might prolong his stay.
* We start the rebuild 1-2 years earlier either way

Downside:
*He gets injured and/or he leaves in a year.

There's a lot more upside here than downside. It's almost impossible to get a top 5-10 player, even for just a year.

The reality of the situation is the Raps will have to rebuild in two years anyways given the current cores age/contract situation. If he leaves you're just moving up the timeframe by a year.

Even if it doesn't work out with Kawhi, he's still an asset the Raps could deal during the season or do a sign and trade after the season since they can offer him the most money.

When you have the chance to land a top 5 player, you do it, especially for a franchise like Toronto that isn't a glamour franchise like LA.

I thought the Lakers didn't want to give to up Ingram/Ball, which was the sticking point with the Spurs.

Understood.

NBA trades work different, profoundly differently, than NHL trades. Where you see "quality" (i.e. high priced veterans, all-stars) I see cap holds that require matching, and ultimately more assets (i.e. Danny Green's expiring contract) that you would otherwise not want to trade included in a deal you're already being forced to do.

The "Quality" in any deal coming from Toronto, or centerpiece if you will, is the young asset(s) that goes the other way. Poeltl\OG\Siakam\Wright all hold significantly more value in trade to the Spurs than the Kyle\Demar piece. Moreover, if the Raptors are trading for one season of Kawhi, they will want to have those two to play along side him. Thus why it makes little to no sense that one will be included.

Well, so much for being profoundly different!

You don't get a superstar without giving one up.

Now let's see how much it's gonna really cost us.

I tweeted this out earlier. If we trade for Leonard. He's leaving the second he's able to. And I wouldn't be surprised he gets"hurt" at some point and plays a total of 0 games for the raps. Didn't Alonzo Mourning refuse to report to the raptors? And don't try and tell me it's a different situation. The base issue is the same.

Edit: yes I'm F******* bitter. The NBA took our expansion money and screwed us on the expansion rules and the first drafts. NBA players general never want to play here. Everyone worth a damn wants to leave. Or are here only for money And leave in the end. I like DeMar and he actually wants to be here and I feel bad for him

Probably didn't want to give up both, which they would undoubtedly ask for.

You don't get a superstar without giving one up. I'd let them hold Ingram, and do Lonzo\Hart as a basis.

Lmao. Yes, hockey and basketball are the same.....Can't wait to see you compare this deal to the Kessel deal.

We'll file this one away until we see the final deal(s) play out.

If Masai is stupid enough to trade DD for a player who he hasn't got a commitment from to at least show up and play, he deserves to be fired, even after all the good he's done for the franchise.

That said, I can't remember the last time Masai lost a major trade, so there's that.

I agree 100%.

Its basically counter productive to trade Lowry or DD in any deal for Leonard. You would want to build a 3 headed monster for one season if possible.

Ideally you would trade Ibaka as part of the deal, spicing it up with youth and picks. But it may end up costing you JV, Poeltl and Wright plus a 1st.

If somehow we can lessen the blow by keeping one of Poeltl or Wright I would be ok with that deal. So one of JV or Ibaka, One of Poeltl or Wright, another small piece and a first rounder.

How so? When healthy, Leonard is a better player than DD in all aspects. The problem is his health and his desire to play anywhere except LA.

Can't see anyone wanting to take Ibaka, really.

Which makes bigger news? Machado or Kawhi? lol, if Kawhi went to the Lakers, the LA media would have an aneurysm trying to cover their sports teams today.

I’m very curious why more teams haven’t had interest in this guy.

Must be a reason. If he’s so good as a lot of people say why aren’t more teams offering???

Cap room, most teams don't have it nor want to give up prime pieces to make a deal where he doesn't sign long-term. Add the fact that he wants to play in LA, and only in LA, and we jump to the front of the line.

This is the thing...we know he is not. We have a track record of actions to prove it. Methinks there's a lot more to the situation.

Wow...horrid takes.

Lowry was given more annually in exchange for only getting 3 years. Paul just got 4/160, for comparison.

Can't close out games? What do you mean by that? Raptors won the East this year - who do you think was closing out the games? Who closed out game 6 against Washington this year?

Never won in the playoffs? Raptors have won more playoff games over the past 3 years than any team that didn't have Lebron or Curry & friends on it.

Finally, Lowry has been named to multiple all-star teams and to the all-NBA team. LOl @ calling him an average pg.

The hate on Kyle is misplaced and yeah I was thinking of the Paul contract too - 4x40M! Okay he almost took them past the Warriors (and would have had he not gotten injured), but he's not that much better than Kyle, and I don't even like Kyle that much.

I just dont know how I feel about trading DD for 1 year of a guy who doesnt want to be here.

If Leonard doesnt want to be here..move on and find a better long term solution in a trade for DD.

Unless..they go and flip Leonard to LAL so that Lakers feel better about sending good young players back since it isnt in conference?
