Ditto. Although I hate the GM far more than anyone else. Would I like Marner at the $8 he should be making? Probably not. But it would be a lot easier to trade.
Yup, me too. It stems from the near top. Or the very tope (MLSE). I like Shanny I just honestly think he hired the wrong GM.

Right now

Like: Spezza, Campbell, Shanny, Rielly, Nylander (not because his latest playoff).
Like but I feel they need to make it up to us: Matthews, Shanny, Hymen
Neutral- Muzzin, Holl, Kerfoot, Brodie, Simmons, Soup, Anderssen
Don't Like- Tavares
Am done with at all cost- Dubas, Marner, MLSE, Keefe (Yes man)

If I forgot to mention someone they likely are jobbers or I'm not really drawing a blank

so did JT and he failed there as well
lol, he was there less than half a season. That London team lost the conference final in five games (all in overtime) to a more stacked team -- Windsor finished 14 points better -- that won the Memorial Cup. Marner's London team was favoured to win the league.

There isn't any two (Maybe even 3) players on the Islanders that are as skilled as either one of Marner or Matthews. Inherent skill is something you cannot teach, no matter the coaching staff you have. By the time a player hits the NHL, they will already have all the skill they will ever have, it's just a matter of refining it and molding it so it manifests appropriately in a team environment in the show. Matthews and Marner (Matthew especially) have skillsets that are nearly unmatched in several categories.

There are however things that can be worked on and grown, but do not immediately follow players or mature once in the big leagues (Work ethic, drive, willpower). These things can be taught through rigorous training, mentorship, buy-in, and lots and lots and lots of determination. The Leafs, especially the big 3 (Though Nylander perhaps solved this), have not obtained these traits yet. It will be up to them (The players) and the coaching staff to manifest these things.

I thought Tavares could provide that but it is apparent he suffers the same symptom.

This core needs a change to find someone who possesses more of this natural ability already.
It’s slow death if all members lack the same traits. The same drive.
We need skill plus grind core member with fire.
You can’t help but follow the lead or you’re gone.
Do not follow Marner’s lead.

For those picking Clark. Wendel was a great player. He went to war every time he stepped on the ice. He went to war with Doug Gilmour, another warrior. He fought Marty McSorley who had 40 lbs on him for Doug Gilmour. Is he going to fight Marty McSorley for Mitch Marner's greedy flyby playoff disappearing butt? I doubt it. He'd probably ask for a trade to a real team.

Mats for JT or Dougie for Mitch I think. I remember Sittler at his peak and he may have been a bigger star than Sundin but he didn't age as well. Borje for Morgs is a good one because he was just the best Leafs D man of the modern era. I was thinking of Wendell for the scoring plus crazy scare factor but my guess is he would be getting suspended so often he would be ineffective. Good thread.

I think Darryl got worn down having to play for Ballard. That would take the steam out of anyone's love for the game. Up until his last season in Detroit, he was still a solid player. Makes me weep sometimes when I think of how some of those really good Leaf teams of the 70s, on the cusp of being great, were screwed by a couple of egomaniacal morons (Ballard and Imlach).

You think Dubas has done any better? Were only a few years away from seeing this team become littered with 5'7 160 pounders in his vision. Besides the Brodie signing, he's had arguably the worst calendar year any Leaf GM has had in recent memory, and thats saying a lot.

My pick is Mahovlich for any top 6 winger we have

I dealt with Mahovlich. After his career. How any coach didn't rip their hair out, after coaching this guy for a few games, is staggering to me.

Lol, the guy, is a superstar on Monday, space cadet on tuesday. Course he went into government.

And I'll take Marner for Gilmour. Ultimate spoiled brat for ultimate playoff warrior. Peak Gilmour is still the best Maple Leaf I've ever watched play since I started following the team in 1985. It was a short peak but it was very special.
Somehow you didn’t say Clark.
Best Leaf Ever.
Way better than Gilmour.
Not even close.

I realized I'm still a Leafs fan. I just hate the core we have. You guys helped me realize I love the Leafs.
How crazy is that when you consider how excited we all were when this core first arrived on the scene and after that Washington series? How the mighty have fallen.
Sundin for Tavares, Clark or Gilmour for Marner, Tucker or Roberts in for anyone else except 34. Salming for any of the Dmen. Cujo in net.

Out: Mitch Marner
In: Wendel Clark or Tiger Williams (trading partner would have to add a little)

I don't know who I'm subtracting, but I know I'm adding Charlie Conacher, who was the team's enforcer while leading the league in goals 5 times.
