No, that is not what the article says. The article clearly says the victim was 12 at the time, but Reid pleaded to assaulting someone 13-16, which was at the judge's discretion.

It STARTED when she was 12, which is bad enough, but then it happened again when she was 13-16, so I guess the judge decided to focus on that part for some reason.

What a backwards legal system.

Except they don’t rot in prison, for some odd reason child molesters never seem to get stiff sentences. And even when they do they simply enter protective custody, they get their own area removed from the general population where they don’t have to fear retribution. That’s the reality, they prey upon the most vulnerable only to get cable TV, chocolate milk and board games - nice and protected from the other prisoners until their time is up.

Any sane society would take these people and repurpose them into fertilizer - They’re clearly broken beyond repair.

You clearly have zero idea on what the loss of freedom entails.

Just for fun why don't you go to a hotel, heck a 5 star hotel and not leave for a week, enjoy the cable, room service heck everything like that just don't leave the room ever and don't have friends over and tell me it's not a big deal.

People's perception on the loss of freedom, or going to jail is truly distorted as is their sense of justice or punishment which seems to be stuck in medieval times for some strange reason.

The HF Boards can sometimes be a great place to discuss hockey and even then some people often give little or no thought to what they say, but it is rarely a place to discuss larger social issues or problems without devolving into a complete waste of time and thought and instead just turns into a mob mentality and hysteria.

Boucher has been dealt with the court system and no doubt having even a little bit of fame he will not get off Scott free like some are suggesting here but it's pretty obvious that HF boards is perhaps the last place to even discuss serious solutions to these types of problems in society.

I have zero compassion for child predators, and I have no f***s to give for anyone with a problem with that, that is my line in the sand where if crossed I’m all for medieval style punishments and loss of life. To be honest I’m for throwing those who defend child abuser into the same pit, and I applaud violent retribution when it does occur.

And you can save your scenarios, I’ve been to jail and I’ve had relatives do time for armed robbery and manslaughter (and FYI these pandemic lockdowns have been more Isolating and freedom depriving for many than jail time). If you think doing PC time is any kind of suffering then you have been terrible misinformed. And if you think our justice system isn’t corrupt and flawed and lenient on child predators then I have a bridge to sell you.

I’m tired of both the system under punishing these crimes and the knobs who defend these pieces of shit because they have a false belief that they can be rehabilitated, they can’t. When a brain damaged hen pecks her chicks to death and starts going after others you don’t rub it’s belly and ask it how it feels, you also don’t give it a time out before putting it back in the coop to become a threat once again, sometimes the safest and most humane solution is to just cut its head off.

:dunno:

The Sarnia Sting say they’re “shocked” oh wow what a surprise. No you aren’t you lying pieces of filth. You just moved him to a different family and swept this thing under the rug. Same thing as the Blackhawks with Aldrich. And now another person had to grow up with unthinkable things being done to them and no reckoning until it’s too late. Absolutely disgusting. At the very least some heads need to roll for this.
Sarnia didn't move him, bud. He was with the USNDP when this happened. If anything, heads need to roll there.

Reid Boucher is a rare exception to the rule. Most hockey players are good people.
Pretty sure most NFL arrests are drug, alcohol or driving offenses. Or at least offenses adjacent to those. Also bear in mind that NFL active rosters are nearly twice as large as NHL active rosters (plus the practice squads now).

There also really isn't much crime among NBA players. Maybe a handful (or two) of arrests per year and the majority of those are also drug, alcohol or driving offenses.

I know you didn't directly imply that football or basketball players were somehow worse people than hockey players, but when it comes to truly heinous crimes, those are just as rare in these sports as they are in hockey. Also, given the nature of Boucher's case, the relative media silence compared to the ridiculous amount of coverage an NFL or NBA player gets from being caught speeding or carrying marijuana tells me that there are probably many more small crimes being committed by hockey players than are known to us.

I'm not sure how you can make such a sweeping generalization. I think it's more likely that hockey, like all of the major sports has a good number of bad apples that have been enabled and empowered to do what they want, when they want with seeming impunity.

From the article. Helps people understand what went down.

Jesus, just awful. What a manipulative scumbag. I wish something would have been done sooner. Always sickens me when you hear about this 11 years later. Imagine waiting over a decade for your assaulter to be brought to justice and watching carve out a professional career (even a mediocre one).

Then there's this little cherry:

WTF is broken in the hockey community that seemingly basic actions on sexual assault can't be taken?
It is not just the "hockey community". In society at large, there is still a large portion of people, including victims and their families, who want to forget about what happened and put it behind them. The satisfaction of seeing punishment meted out is cold comfort, nvm the fight and scrutiny that they will have to be believed should they go to authorities.

"Like all of the major sports" implies that it's a systemic issue in the way elite athletes are treated by society as a whole, which seems like a fair generalization.

Narrowing the issue down to a group of people because of their sport of choice would be an unfair generalization.

Yeah, personally I really dislike this trend of thinking that anything under 18 is a child and at 18 you suddenly become an adult. It doesn't work like that, human brain continues developing well into the late 20s and there is no hard line anywhere, it's a completely outdated way of thinking. It's honestly completely arbitrary to have 18 as some cut off, it has absolutely no scientific basis. A 17-year-old is more than old enough to think for himself, and the punishment should be significant.

Usually the problem though is that it's pretty much impossible to prove that such a thing happened. Here he pleaded guilty, but if he hadn't I imagine they'd have been hard pressed to be able to actually convict him, since proof is practically impossible to find. It's a bit of a pleasant surprise that the statute of limitations didn't kick in, actually. I guess over here they're not valid for as long.

First off screw this guy. 12 years old? You cant be around me anymore buds. Have fun in prison.

i see a lot of arguing here About culture.

As someone who USED to work in the hospitality industry (thank christ not anymore) I can tell you who on the surface level were the best to work with and serve *sports related. It's all very surface interactions keep in mind. But generally we knew if a certain sport was coming to our hotel, we know what to expect.

1. Sports coaches/staff/trainers
2. Hockey players
3. Baseball players
4. MMA/Kickboxing***
5. Soccer players
...
...
50. Basketball
....
....
99. Football players

***the mma/kickboxing athletes were interesting. Most were great but there seemed to be a weird thing with Turkish and Morrocans that lived in Netherlands who were out of their minds and extremely unpleasant. When I say unpleasant, maybe a living nightmare might be a better way to put it.

Now carry on, call me a liar, ask for my T4 to prove I worked there, I really don't care.

Knowing the number of people who have been proven innocent on appeal you are cool with that?

You could accept those innocent deaths just to appease your bloodlust? Or is it cheapness? You don't want to pay to make sure innocent people aren't killed...? Even knowing that the worse punishment is life in prison.

I can understand killing in self defence or war even, in the moment, hot, kill or be killed.

But to coldly end someone's life without immediate danger is something I could never support for so many good reasons but the most important one is that I don't want that on my soul.

He plead guilty
