The growth in his game since the Olympics, even if it is just a few months, is special.

To me there is 1 clear thing that he must improve on and I think NHL development team will help him greatly with it: He watches the puck too much when it’s being cycled in the defensive zone. I understand Dman staying home, but he has the skating ability to recover quickly.

Still, an overall really impressive tournament. I would really like him to go to Seattle

I mean at this point we have Hamilton (who I get some don’t see as top pairing) and it looks like Severson is going to be extended. Luke will probably need to be paired with one of them for his first couple of years. Can’t have two rookies on the first pair.

The Devils do need another rhd going forward I’m just not sure it’s as immediate a need as some say.

I will not be upset at all if we draft him though. I’ll be fine with one of this guy, Slaf, Cooley, or Jiricek. They all really fill a need. Not Cooley as much but he might be BPA and Fitz said he’s probably going BPA.

I don’t see any of those being franchise cornestones.
& Hamilton is clearly older than the Hischier/Hughes/whoever they pick this year core.

This should be Devils last high pick for a long time and I’d target a Dman.

Guys like Makar, McAvoy, Heiskanen you name it are huge game changers for teams

Dougie Hamilton hasn't even turned 29 yet.

In addition to Luke Hughes, there is also Ty Smith.

I don't understand why some think the Devils are going to go Nemec in 2.

A power left forward like Slafkovsky is sorely missed by the team.

New Jersey doesn't need a No. 1 defenseman. Luke Hughes will be that guy for the next 15 years. It takes a potential top 4 right-handed defenseman. Player that New Jersey can get early in the 2nd round by targeting Christian Kyrou, Mathias Havelid, Seamus Casey or Ryan Chesley.

Ty Smith? Really? Dude is done. He'd be lucky to play on the top pairing of an AHL team unless of a huge 180

If he's second on their list, they'll take him. People seem to forget that most GMs go BPA and rare are those drafting for need and for a good reason

DHamilton is not as good as what some think
Ty Smith was ruined, because of Devils signed Hamilton
Luke Hughes is LD

Devils 100% need a true franchise/elite RD like Simon Nemec

And i don't think Christian Kyrou falls is to 2nd round.

Smith done at U22? Not very convincing. Otherwise who is there to support Hughes or Hischier on the wing on a top 6?

Bratt-Mercer-Tatar-Johnsson and then you have to draw, shift Zacha to the wing, Holtz as a prospect... Wingers who don't bring a lot of physicality around a player like Jack Hughes who already doesn't have a lot .

Nemec would take the place of Dougie Hamilton, Slafkovsky would take the place of Tomas Tatar.

It seems more urgent to me to take an Elite power winger than an Elite right defender when the top 4 for the next 5 years is already built (Hughes-Hamilton; Smith-Severson). That's not the case in the top 6 where a big piece is missing for a line around Hughes that would match exactly who Slafkovsky is.

Kyrou nobody gives him 1st round but even if it was the case, there are many other players on the right especially in this extremely deep draft at this position. I quoted many other players than him.

Ty Smith is 22 on a weak team and hasn’t even played a full 82 game season yet. I wasn’t overly impressed with him either at times but it’s way too early to write him off.

I don’t think people are thinking he goes but saying maybe he should.

Devils have Hughes, Hischier, Bratt at F.

Add Seider level Dprospect into the mix and that’s a beast of a team in the making.

Basically do you want Toronto like core or Tampa like core

That's only 3 players for a top 6. You can add Mercer and Holtz. But where is the physical attacker that gives you the puck in the corners ?

There are 12 chairs in O, only 6 in D. As already said, there are already 4 well-established players in D. And there are plenty of possibilities for the last 2 chairs.

Two No. 1 defenders who will have to be paid in 2026 as No. 1 defenders.

If it wasn't for Luke Hughes, ok but it's not.

An NHL team cannot be built like Team Canada or USA during the Olympics. The salary cap makes dream teams impossible. You need a smartly built team and you have to surround your two centers. And not just by dancers like Bratt. It takes hard workers. Slafkovsky is this extremely rare player profile that would bring a lot to Jack Hughes.

Really good 1st period in a do or die game against Finland.

There should be no debate anymore, he's the best D in the draft. Jiricek is still good, Nemec is just slightly better.

Edit: And yes, I know he made a horrible play that led to a Finnish goal after this. He still played a very strong game overall.

Slovakian defenceman Simon Nemec has excelled playing against his own age group as well as against men in the Slovakian Elite League. He helped lead Slovakia to a silver medal at the Hlinka-Gretzky tournament last summer, the best-ever showing for the country. Nemec put up one goal and five assists for six points in five games. He won the tournament MVP. As an underage player at the 2021 World Juniors, he was named a top-three player on the Slovakian team, putting up four assists in five games. He had one assist in two games in this year’s tournament before things were called off due to COVID.

Or, they have their own lite-version of COL's Makar+Byram, where you've got two studs you can have out there almost the entire game between them.
Tampa Bay has three really good players on different defensive pairs, and then stack when needed; it seemed to have worked out great for them

I dont need all that but I would be excited if NJ took Nemec at 2. Sounds like he could be a right handed top pair guy. I dont think they will though

Nemec will be the best player from this draft in a redraft. When the “top” forwards are meh, a
Defenceman usually takes the cake eventually.

Nemec’s speed, puck handling, and quick ability to identify plays will make him a great player in the NHL.

yeah, I agree. Spot on. I have really good vibes about Nemec. Chara vibes (not the style of a play but pure quality and nationality). He is going to be better than either Černák or Fehervary and that is something to say.

He very well could be.
