Devils should take him over Slaf.

They are really lacking that blueline cornestone to run with Hughes
I mean at this point we have Hamilton (who I get some don’t see as top pairing) and it looks like Severson is going to be extended. Luke will probably need to be paired with one of them for his first couple of years. Can’t have two rookies on the first pair.

The Devils do need another rhd going forward I’m just not sure it’s as immediate a need as some say.

I will not be upset at all if we draft him though. I’ll be fine with one of this guy, Slaf, Cooley, or Jiricek. They all really fill a need. Not Cooley as much but he might be BPA and Fitz said he’s probably going BPA.

At some point it’s diminishing returns if you take another centre. I get going BPA, but drafting someone slotting into your 4th line isn't smart when you can draft a potential top line LW or top pairing RD (2nd pairing if Dougie keeps up his play). I just don’t see any scenario where the Devils take Cooley.

For the most part I agree with you. Cooley doesn’t seem like the type of center you can slot to a wing. But having him or Nico as the 3C and being able to permanently keep Mercer on a wing is good for us too.

In the end though I don’t think they draft him. Let him thrive somewhere else.

I could possibly see a trade down with the Blue Jackets who probably want a Top-6 centre. I wonder if 6+12 for 2 is something the Devils would consider.

Nah. I can’t see NJ trading down unless it’s one spot. They have to make sure they get one of Slaf, Nemec, or Jiricek. We’re pretty set as far as depth players go so getting one more high end piece helps more.

Yes, Nemec is my #1 player in the draft. I just like how easy it is for him carying the puck and how smart he is.

Whichever team get him will have a gem!
Wish the Habs had the balls to just trade the pick and grab him at 3 or 4

This movement would not be courage, it would be stupidity.

Montreal doesn't have anyone in C in its prospect pool. As a right-handed defender, they have already recruited Mailloux and Barron in the past 10 months. In addition, the draft is very deep in potential top 4 right-handed defenseman this year for next pick. Not in center n°1.

Brandt Clarke without the skating concerns.

Could he become a Adam Fox kinda D?

Really good offensively, but even better on D?
Adam Fox is actually the perfect comparable.

With Nemec, my main thing is that he’s so much more effective in rush situations than otherwise.

He gets a lot of credit (maybe too much) for being great defensively. I don’t him that’s true from what I’ve seen. I think he’s smart, he’s got great wheels, and a good stick. He’s a very good rush defender. But from what I’ve seen, he struggles defending the cycle. And against established possession, and good forechecking. He reminds me a bit of Alex Goligoski that way. Guy was great at defending the rush but was easily overwhelmed against the cycle.

The crazy thing is, I think he’s got similar issues on offense. On the rush, he's an Adam Fox clone. Which is really something because Fox is just about as unique as they come. On the rush, you can see he's got the insane wheels, and puck rushing ability. He’s got the eye-popping footwork, and stick handling. He does all of those wild shimmy shakes and head fakes, feints and directional and pace changes. Loves breaking ankles like Fox and making something out of nothing. Embarrassing guys. He’s got that that jaw-dropping talent.

I don’t think he’s got that PPQB ability Fox does, though. Nemec has a long way to go on producing offense outside of rush scenarios before he’s anything like Fox. He doesn't control things from the point well when his team is set up from what I've seen. And that Euro ice is so dang big, that he often just generates in-zone rushing opportunities. But the D2D passing, patiently opening up lanes, finding seams, etc isn't where I've seen him flourish.

Nemec is bigger than Fox but he doesn't use his size at all. The reach helps, but he's not physically assertive. And he's not much of a goal scoring threat. He's got a weak shot. It needs to get better if he's going to keep goalies and defenders guessing. He needs to improve the shot if he's going to keep the opposition from cheating.

The good thing is he's 18 years old. Adam Fox wasn't Adam Fox when he was 18 years old. Nemec is a heckuva lot closer to Fox than Fox was at the same age. There's no reason to suspect he won't develop and improve. I think the Adam Fox comp is pretty perfect (albeit too lofty, as Fox is a Norris winner).

Nemec is fun to watch. I'm a big fan.

Why couldn’t Cooley play wing? He may have to in the NHL.

Do you see any similarities between him and Heiskanen? That one came to my mind when I watched Slovakia-France game. Both are great skaters, good defensively but they doesn't use their size at all. They are also pretty skilled guys. On the other hand, I was more interested in Slafkovsky, so I didn't watch Nemec too closely.

I saw in the game thread someone thought Nemec looked bad on one of Germany's goals. But in his defense he was interfered with when he was backchecking through the neutral zone. It wasn't much, but looked intentional to me.

I mentioned same thing on Slaf thread. That goal was more on Slaf's weak pass on offensive zone though. Nemec strenghts and weaknesses were pretty visible in this game.

Nemec is bit clueless when he has to defend cycle on his own zone. He can be caught puck watching quite lot. But when he gets puck, he is at his best. Effective passer and never seems to have problems when pressured.

He is strong on middle ice and offensive zone. Okay at cutting off offensive plays before blue line. His problems start to appear when he has to be on his own end and/or without puck.

All things said though, his weaknesses should be pretty easy to coach away.

I totally agree.

This is my preferred pick at 6 for CBJ, however either D is fine with me. I don't believe either will be on the board though
