Lets revisit this in a few months, no one will care about the tournament. Most Wings fans and fans of Simon in general have not soured on him at all after a few games where he did not light the world on fire. He still has a huge amount of room to develop and improve sure, but the raw tools and the fact he has already held his own in one of the best mens leagues in the world speaks for itself... I am sure it is not easy to transition back to junior ranks after playing pro.

~6cm (2 inches) is still a fairly significant difference when talking about what makes Edvinsson special. I do think Nurse is a good player and it wouldn't be a bad ballpark kind of level for Edvinsson, but at this point he's trending better than that.
I'd be massively disappointed if he ends up a Nurse clone...

He was sick this tournament. Literally. Anyone who's watched him before this tournament knows how good he really is.

Always love seeing people make conclusions about a player they’ve likely never seen before based on a 6 game tournament. Edvinsson sucked in this but many of the issues he displayed here he never has before

I have not been satisfied with how I played in any of the matches - Edvinsson

I mean I want him to be better than that, but if he's a Nurse clone and doesn't get paid like one is that really so bad? At that level that would be a good person to lead the 2nd pairing with Seider on the top?

I think people here are making too much of this WJC showing. The whole of team Sweden was mediocre to bad. They were less than the sum of their parts.

If Edvinsson comes to camp and plays the same in traverse City and in the preseason? Then I’ll be a bit worried.

A lot of teams would love to have a non-overpaid Nurse as their #2D but ok.

A lot of defensive prospects right now are hyped to become #1Ds and people don't realise how rare it is for a defenseman to actually reach that level.

I think it’s still more than possible he becomes a true 1st paring guy . Not sure if the offence will be there to be a #1 but Wings don’t need him to be .

And that's totally fine. I said on the Wings board that we would all love if both Seider AND Edvinsson could become 60+ point defensive beasts but if Seider becomes the 60+ point guy and Edvinsson is the 30-40 point defensive guy that would be A-OK too. It would be like Keith - Seabrook in their heyday.

Easier said than done but I wouldn’t put too much weight into one tournament ( that was in the middle of summer with no real turn up prior to it ). Plus he was sick …
I know id freak out though if (me ad a Devils fan ) Luke Hughes had a underwhelming tournament but if you look at but subjectivity , no way does this take away from all the excellent play and development Edvinsson had all season prior to this .
He still has the potential to be the best D out if his draft. Power Hughes Edvinsson Clarke plus many others still are young as hell and have #1 potential in my humble opinion.

Getting a solid top 4D at 6th overall is certainly not a “massive” disappointment.

Nurse as a whole is a good D, the problem is he’s definitely not a #1D and DEFINITELY not worth $9.5M

Expecting much more than that is just setting yourself up for disappointment

What I'm wondering is where the Nurse and Edvinsson comparisons are coming from. Aside from being tall left defense they are very different players.

I think it’s from a “all tools, questionable (at this point) IQ” standpoint. They don’t play all that similar though.

Regardless, I’d be more than happy having Edvisson turn into a Nurse. As long as he isn’t paid anywhere close to the same

Simon doesn’t have questionable IQ though. He was stellar defensively in the SHL in his d+1.

He’s always had questions about it, and it showed in the WJC as well.

It’s definitely his biggest flaw at this point and we will see how it works out this season
I mean sure, if you want to act like he wasn't injured and had food poisoning. His iq sure looked fine at the wjc last December. Though I am in the camp that he hasn't looked the same since his injury early this year.

It’s a summer tournament before the season starts, i’m not worried at all about how he projects to the next level.

Just the sky isn’t the limit with this kid, he could go to space. Fantastic athlete for his size, in my opinion he’s got elite #1 dman written all over him

Yeah Nurse is a good player. Nobody should be disappointed if he turns into that.
