“He’s like a walking bulldozer. When he wants to, he can make you disintegrate with just a stride or two. Nobody on the planet wants to go 1-on-1 with him.”

That’s just one scout’s opinion on Simon Edvinsson, the 6-foot-6 hulking blueliner from Sweden. He was drafted sixth overall by Detroit in 2021, and with Calder Trophy Winner Moritz Seider already in the lineup, he’s not far from giving the Red Wings one of the most feared 1-2 defensive duos in the NHL.

I think the single thing that Edvinsson needs to work on would be his puck IQ in the offensive and neutral zone. He has next to no deception with the puck and the opponent often has no problem reading what he'll do next. He also often sends weak wristers that gets blocked instead of the more obvious and effective decisions. Based on this, it's quite easy to see why he hasn't played on the powerplay yet. But it's not like he doesn't flash some nice offensive decisions here and there, because he absolutely does. Just got to be much more consistent with it, and he's super young so that's something that could absolutely come in a few years and could suddenly see him on a powerplay eventually.

But that's about it for his negatives, imo. Everything else is high end or elite. His offensive and defensive anticipation off the puck is amazing and he obviously gets out of a lot of trouble with his ridiculous range, hands, speed, size... it's like a huge cheat code whenever he's close to getting caught. His defensive work is unreal, almost unfair. If what I talked about in the first paragraph doesn't improve, his floor would still be a top-4 high end defensive defenseman with some puck carrying abilities, but his ceiling is insane and, as a wings fan, I really hope he reaches it, or close to it.

Like I said in the past, he needs to improve his shot power and he needs to become better at walking the blueline with the puck, and needs to improve his anticipation at the blueline to be better at holding it against clearing attempts. I think his puck IQ is fine and he’s very good at funneling pucks to the net. But fixing the other stuff mentioned could really give his offensive game a boost.

Yeah, I guess we see it a bit differently and that makes it more interesting but in essence we agree that there are offensive tools that he still needs to develop. This is based on the games I've seen recently and also his draft year. For example, I personally think his shot is really good but he just doesn't know how to use it effectively yet, but we see glimpses of good usage here and there.

My personal take is that his problems offensively are more confidence based than reads/creativity. I think he often will funnel pucks towards the goal, dump it, take the easy lane to the outside or make a short pass over a more risky but rewarding play because he's not sure if he might turn it over. Whereas when he looks down ice for a long breakout pass, has time to get on his high horse and lead a rush or take a second to really leans into a slapshot, I think he's confident enough to make that play because he's had time to evaluate that it's safe to try. If he's not sure, he just does the easy thing. The irony is that sometimes when someone is really dogging him and a safe play isn't available, that's when you'll see him pull out his best moves because risky but rewarding is all he has to choose from.

Was he the same or worse after the food poisoning?
Against Latvia, he seemed a bit underwhelming, IMO. Didn't really push the game any direction.

I am/was pretty high on him tho and have not seen other Swedish tournament games.

He was probably not his best after his foodpoisoning against Latvia either. But know he should have had time to get things together . Next game no more exuses.
But Monten will probably make them all play like crap. Andrae seems being Monten imune.

It should also be noted that most prospects in the same situation as Edvinsson (trying to push for an NHL job this season) skipped the tournament. He's still following a workout plan that is designed to have him at his best when NHL training camp starts, not right now.

There's really 4 things to consider when it comes to his play so far:

1. It's a summer tournament.
2. He exited after IIRC 3 shifts against Canada in the practice game heading into the WJCs which took him out until the initial game of the WJCs.
3. Then he got food poisoning for the US game, and also missed one more game + some practices due to it. He himself said it was worse than the injury was.
4. He's coached by Montén.

Another point: I think he was much better with the puck in the cancelled WJC so that's a good thing to keep in mind.

Not sure I see the unicorn type potential some people talk about. Could see him becoming a Nurse-like defenceman though.
Edvinsson had quite a terrible tournament but that's just that: a tournament and a summer one at that. He had health issues so it's hard to judge him, also Sweden wasn't good. I've been harsh on him for his play with the puck which have admittedly been mystifying, something I have heavily disliked since his draft year, but his potential is definitely there, he shows flashes of true high end all around skill but it's super inconsistent. This game, for example, his first 2 periods were good but the 3rd period was a total disaster. He has a lot of work to do but his floor is really high, and so is his ceiling, but again LOTS of work to do but his potential is something any GM would be glad to have in their system to work with. I hope his puck play gets better but his defensive play is already excellent and that's a good base to work with.

Having watched a decent amount of him recently, he has a lot to work on. In particular I don't like his offensive instincts or passing. I think he could develop into a good defensive d-man but I think the talk about #1 franchise d-man is incredibly premature. Thankfully he has a lot of development years left.

Is he not similar size to Nurse?

Nurse is a guy with great physical tools like Edvinsson.
~6cm (2 inches) is still a fairly significant difference when talking about what makes Edvinsson special. I do think Nurse is a good player and it wouldn't be a bad ballpark kind of level for Edvinsson, but at this point he's trending better than that.
