So many people slept on Seider too and i think this is the same here. Seider getting picked where he was at the time was surprising enough let alone how good he has turned out. Edvinsson on the other hand isn't as unknown, scouts had him as high as #1 and the Wings may have had him at that too. I called Seider last year and i'm calling Edvinsson next year for the calder.😉
Without powerplay minutes no d-man is winning Calder. It's doubtful Edvinsson logs significant PP time if he's in Detroit next season.

If we stash Edvinsson in Grand Rapids next year, I think he's got a solid chance for the Calder in '23. Next year, I think he's a bit too raw. It's really tough for blueliners to win the Calder unless they're producing buckets of points, I think it's easy to forget how ridiculous Seider's performance is.

On the flip side, I didn't expect Raymond to make the team before camp started and he put forward a solid Calder campaign, so I guess you never really know how they'll hit the ground running.

Ugh. No. Stop trying to put our top prospects on one of the worst AHL teams with an awful coach. I hate the idea of Soderblom, Edvinsson, Johansson, Wallinder and any other prospect worth a damn learning from Ben Simon how to dump and not chase or how to chip it off the glass when there's no forecheck against.

I feel you man, I'm mostly speaking to his Calder chances. I think it's a longshot if he's up in '22/23 (although, like I said, we had the same conversation about Raymond and he exploded). Whereas I think he'd be a stronger Calder candidate in '23/24.

I expect Yzerman will make his judgment in training camp. And if he's lost confidence that Simon is a strong developer of our talent, then I don't think Simon will be behind the bench next season.

The left-handed spot on the 2nd defence pairing is his to lose. I can't imagine that Oesterle or anyone in Grand Rapids has a real shot to surpass him. Maybe Walman if he doesn't go on the top-pairing.

I don't care if he wins the Calder, to be honest. I just want him playing in the NHL because he could be an impact defensively starting next season. The other stuff in his game that needs work would be better served working on it with guys like Seider than Dan Reneouf.

I wouldn't be surprised if he got the Seider treatment. One of Horcoff,Cleary or Kronwall said this year this year to fans to keep a close eye on him because he won't be playing in Europe. Seider didn't even play in the prospects camp because he was already pencilled in.

I would be really surprised if Edvinsson doesnt play in the prospects tournament though. Seider had a year in Grand Rapids already so the wings knew what they had, then he got a year in Sweden because of Rona that he woulda been in the NHL for.

Edvinsson hasnt played in North America so I'm sure theyll get him on the small ice in that tourney to get ready for camp. Hes a year younger than Seider was when he debuted as well

Oh I don't especially care about the Calder either, rookie of the year awards aren't a great indicator of a player's ultimate success (@ Scottie Barnes @ Scottie Barnes @ Scottie Barnes). I was just chiming on his chances because that was the conversation above me.

I genuinely don't know if he's best off in the NHL or AHL, I feel like camp will be pretty revealing.

I’d be shocked if Simon is back

It’s going to be fun seeing who the stud rookie D is in 23-24. Hughes is going to give him a run at the very least.
Both habe potemti to be rookie stars but it will be very cool to watch the next bunch of elite D kids coming up

Agreed, although my instinct is that Edvinsson plays at least enough games next season to disqualify him from the '23 Calder race. Tough to say in Detroit though, you never know.

I like Hughes a bit more than Edvinsson still, but there both really impressive young players. I do think Edvinsson fits into the Tampa Bay Jr. blueline that Yzerman seems adamant on building here in Detroit.

I disagree on the basis that hughes will be better because edvinssons size is invaluable, hughes may end up the better offensive player but I’ll always take the guy who is an elite skater and pushing 6’7. He’s the perfect playoff defenseman prototype.

Edvinsson is a superior defender with skating that’s equal to or close to Hughes as well.

Is he pushing 6'7 now? I've seen a lot of different heights listed and I'm not sure what's reliable at this point. But yeah his size and skating combination is certainly rare.

I could see either player developing into the more valuable NHLer. I think it's very close. If Edvinsson had been able to lock down that powerplay role on Frolunda and really showcase his ability to quarterback then it might be a different story for me. But right now that part of his game is just such a question mark. I like what he's done at the U20 level, and I think he has tools that suggest he can potentially quarterback an NHL powerplay. I think Red Wings fans underestimate that question mark in his game though.

I can see where the other strengths of his game outweigh that concern for some viewers. I do think they're very close as prospects.
