What I really noticed about him at the WJCs was sort of a flashy element that most #1 style defensemen do not have. He seems to be a pretty talented stickhandler, especially at the line, and made some nifty moves to keep the puck in.

so, I'm not really sure. To me, he plays like a huge version of a small defenseman.

you think the guy will be more of a offensive defenseman or a defensive defenseman ?

He's going to be great at both, but just a little more toward the offensive side. I don't think he's ever going to be the physical defenseman that people want him to be, and that'll count against him defensively. I've read before that his favorite player is Lidstrom, and it shows in some of his instincts on the ice. He'd rather take away the play than take the player completely out of it.

edit: Yeah. From an article:

4. Do you try to model your game after a player in the NHL?

"I try to play like [former Detroit Red Wings captain] Nicklas Lidstrom. He plays a smart, simple game. I try to play a similar style."

Both. I think he's a Rob Blake clone personally. I've only viewed him 3 times live, and about 3-4 times on TV, but I always walk away with the same comparison. Whatever team drafts him is going to have a cornerstone to build around for the next 15years! (Captain written all over him)

wow i sure hope the flames can grab this guy. this is what they need on there team if they start a rebuild

I agree with the Shea Weber comparison though I think Jones ends up being a more dynamic player over the course of his career, though he doesn't have that scatter the bowling pins snapshot that Weber has. The most impressive thing about Jones is the confidence level, it's just off the charts for a guy his age. He is the MAN and he knows it at 19, WOW!

Or the fact he thinks the game the same way as Johnson, and has a good shot but is a generally a passer like Johnson but it must be he is an american defender.

Curious: Can you describe how E.Johnson thinks the game?

Calm,Solid positioning doesn't often get caught in a bad spot, he reads the ice well, neither is extremely physical and use the stick effectively but both have the size needed to be physical if they need tobe.

Gotcha! Thanks for the info

Erik Johnson is an unusual comparison, mainly because EJ has a great tool-set, but has poor hockey sense. I don't think he'll ever live up to his billing, nor will he put up good offensive totals.

Seth Jones has a lot of raw athletic ability, but by far his biggest strength is his calm demeanor and superb hockey IQ.

Less phyisical better skating Weber???

So....not Shea Weber? He doesn't have his shot either and Jones is more offensive minded.

I don't think anyone really compares to Jones directly. Parts of his game you can compare, but as a whole he has a rare combination of size, skill, and speed that hasn't been seen in quite some time.

Johnson didn't pan out because of a lack of hockey sense. Jones has it in spades. I agree that their physical tools are similar (although I'd say Jones has more offensive upside), but the humongous difference is in hockey IQ.

True, that's why he will never make it to the big leagues. Guy still has a shot of being a serviceable 6-7 defenceman one day though.

Disagree EJ doesn't have low hockey IQ, he is playing with R.Wilson who is not a top 2 defensemen and yet EJ makes him look rather good. People seem to forget how dominating EJ was, also he is 24 what do you mean "didn't pan out" he is still a #1 defensemen.

Seth Jones reminds me a lot of Tyler Myers. Can skate, great hands, great passer and more of a passer when it comes to the power play but still has that booming shot. Good in his own zone but not great. Can make the great first pass and those tape to tape lead passes, and he can skate with the best of them.

Bouwmeester with a MUCH better compete level(the Bouwmeester who scored goals not the Flame).

This.

Seth >>>> Johnson. Johnson has 2 cent brain, 10m dollar talent.
