I said if he continues to improve he has that POTENTIAL. Not really a crazy risky take considering I put conditions in there that would have to be met first.

Yeah, see that's kind of my point... You claimed people were saying this:

I’m gonna take some heat but this but idc. You guys need to chill on acting like Seider is all but guaranteed to be a top 5 dman. Preferring Zegras over him really isn’t crazy at all.

When what they were actually saying, was potential, just like you said.

I see a better chance for Seider to be a Top 5 D than for Zegras to be a Top 5 center.

Seider has potential to be the best D-man in the world. Zegras will never, at any point in his career, come close to being the best center in the world.

But to clarify; I would rank Seider #1 and Zegras #2 from that draft so far, and I wouldn't have been bummed out by having Zegras on my team. But I'll take the potential top 5 D-man everytime over the potential top 10-15 center.

Seider might become the one of very few defenseman that all other defensemen in the league are measured against for over a decade.

And I'd say Seider becoming a top defender is probably a lot more likely than Soderblom becoming a #1C... Especially considering he's a winger.

I agree with you FWIW on the Seider/Soderblom part. I don’t recall quoting any of the 3 posts you quoted. You’re assuming I’m talking about them and I wasn’t.

Seeing as how you quoted no posts at all, you kinda open yourself up for who you directed your comment towards. But since you were obviously talking about the other recent posts where people were implying he's a guaranteed Top 5er, I looked back... There were none in the last two pages, beyond one guy asking, "How many Norrises?"

... And that was an Ottawa fan.

Alright you can assume all you want. Can’t stop you. I do think Seider will be a top 5 dman who absolutely smothers other players top stars in big games. Hopefully he gets there.

Seider is still finding more offense all the time. That last OT is a great example. It's like he's starting to realize that he's not just a two-way guy. He's making that Heiskanen-type realization that he has the speed and skill to be involved in every play, even deep in the offensive zone.

Big thing for me is that I want to see consistency out of that shot he had last night. His shot was really the one thing he lacked. If he can solve that? Look out.

"Temper expectations", is quite the hot take from the guy who just said Soderblom has #1C potential.

Is he wrong, though? Is it likely, probably not. But the question is it impossible?

Drafting #1 dman who can shoot like he does is less likely than drafting another Larkin level of C. While a McDavid on the team would be nice and dandy, Boston and Chicago did just fine with their level of Centermen as well.

Err... Drafting a #1D at 6OA is a lot easier than drafting a #1C at the 6th round. (And yes, I realize we've done this before)

Aside from the fact that Elmer literally isn't a center, I'd be very skeptical about his game until he's come to North America and done it. I'm not saying he can't do well here, I'm just saying it's probably gonna be a lot harder for a 6' 8" guy to stick handle the way he does on smaller ice.

gonna be a lot of players setting franchise records for teams in that now that it's 3 on 3 instead of 4 on 4 (and in Lidstrom's day it used to be 5 on 5!)

So far only 5 rookie defenceman in NHL history has been able to score 2 OT goals in the same season.

Seider shares the record with Brent Seabrook (two with Chicago in 2005-06), Cam Fowler (two with Anaheim in 2010-11), P.K.Subban (two with Montreal in 2010-11) and Shayne Gostisbehere (four with Philadelphia in 2015-16).

Seider is the first defenceman to do it in Redwings franchise history and is the first Wings rookie with multiple overtime goals since Anthony Mantha had two in 2016-17.

yes and note how in the entire history of the league every single one of those is since it moved from being 5 on 5 to 4 on 4 (and how nobody had more than two until it became 3 on 3)

Seider hits 50 or more It is not even close for the Calder

Not necessarily. Eventual 7x Norris trophy winner Niklas Lidstrom had 60 points his rookie year but lost the Calder Trophy to Pavel Bure who also had 60 points but had more goals(34).

The voters should have taken into consideration that Bure was a defensive liability on the ice with a +/- of 0 his rookie year while Lidstrom had + 36 but the flashy goalscoring forward usually gets more of the attention in this kind of voting awards than defenceman.

I took seider top 10 in my dynasty league that year, as I had a source Detroit was selecting him. I also know someone from a very good euro-scouting service who said seider was amazing.

Moritz Seider, F, Detroit Red Wings: The No. 6 pick leads rookie defensemen with 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 25 games, six power-play points (all assists) and average ice time (22:32). The 20-year-old leads rookies from his draft class in hits (35) and blocked shots (43) and is first among rookie defensemen with eight takeaways.

I always knew he’d never be as good as Jeff Sharples
This guy was before my time, and honestly I've never heard of him, but its really interesting looking at his hockeydb page.
2nd round pick. Off to a great start in the NHL (as referenced above). Gets demoted to the AHL where he appears to do well, and never sees the NHL again. How come he never got more of a chance?

Sharples is a terrible hockey name.

Also, he was 5'9 in the era of big, slow, unskilled players.
Edit: Maybe he wasn't? Different heights are listed at different sites. It probably was just his name.
