This guy was before my time, and honestly I've never heard of him, but its really interesting looking at his hockeydb page.
2nd round pick. Off to a great start in the NHL (as referenced above). Gets demoted to the AHL where he appears to do well, and never sees the NHL again. How come he never got more of a chance?
I was wondering the same thing

He was traded to Edmonton in '89, which I'm sure was a much harder roster to crack at the time.

EDIT: After looking at him more, he was then traded to the Devils in '90. No idea why he could crack the lineup there. I'm guessing he just had an oddball good year with the Wings when he put up those numbers. His numbers the following year were not anywhere near as good.

Seider just keeps racking up the points. He's so smart with the puck and just finds guys. Such a creative high IQ player that possesses the skills to match.

3rd among rookies in points and only 4 points back on Zegras who is playing in his 2nd NHL stint.

Plus, opposed to Zegras and Raymond he is also, you know, kind of a defenseman, in fact he excells even more at that. Not to mention he carries a known to be weaker defenseman in DDK. Kind of unreal to be honest.

I know it's early, but he's been so good on both ends of the ice that, if he maintains this kind of play, I wouldn't be surprised if a few Norris votes went his way. Am I crazy for thinking he's already a top 20 defenseman (or close to it) after only 31 games? That pass he made tonight to set up Bertuzzi was pretty AF. He's showing every day that his game is very repeatable.

Not exactly scientific but I think top 20 is definitely reasonable. He's 12th in defensive scoring and he's fantastic defensively already.

Thanks for posting that. I no longer think I might be crazy lol.

I've been watching hockey for a long time, and I don't know that I've ever seen a guy like this. Very few defensemen have come into the league and immediately been effective, and if they do, they're usually effective offensively. They'll still need lots of work defensively. We look at these types of rookie d-men and think: "This guy will be really good...someday." Seider is already that good as a rookie. If he keeps progressing at this rate, what will we have in 2-3 yrs? It sounds hyperbolic (standard fare on Hfboards lol), but it's kinda scary thinking about it.

Yeahhhh his defensive game has potential to be best in the league at some point. Not even kidding.

If you just watch him solely, hes so clean at making that little play and immediately making a perfect pass to a forward to turn it into offense. It’s not always a back breaking pass, but it almost always seems to be the right pass.

Very Lidstrom-like in that manner. Hard to believe how good he is already.

This is the thing about Seider, he does the defensive things right and gets his points quietly. Outside of the few nice hits every now and then there's not a whole lot of flash to his game, but this was also how Lidstrom was like.

I would say this year hes fairly easily been a top 20 dman, but its still so early that I wouldnt say hes a bonafide top 20 guy if that makes sense. He needs to do it for a bit longer as a rookie to be considered that.

But so far, top 15 isnt a stretch at all given who he has as a partner, how many points hes putting up and that his game is defensive first.

Not necessarily. Eventual 7x Norris trophy winner Niklas Lidstrom had 60 points his rookie year but lost the Calder Trophy to Pavel Bure who also had 60 points but had more goals(34).

The voters should have taken into consideration that Bure was a defensive liability on the ice with a +/- of 0 his rookie year while Lidstrom had + 36 but the flashy goalscoring forward usually gets more of the attention in this kind of voting awards than defenceman.

Bure also finished of the season with a line of 17-15-7-22 in the final 2 months and that is what impresses voters quite often in awards voting.

I think that having 10 guys with first place votes is very telling how fluid Norris voting is going to be for the next few years.

If you could pick between Fox, Seider, Makar, or Heiskanen to start off a franchise with, who would you pick?

Personally, that is a tough af decision but I'd end up taking Seider. So many similarities to Lidstrom.

Makar
Fox

Heiskanen

But I LOVE seider. Just take the safer bets now. Could easily be seider.

Dude is good. Him and the big Swede will be a rock on defense for years to come. Add Lucas Raymond to the mix and Detroit has some heavy hitters to build around. Game breaking top line/pairing talent.

Refs called it unsportsmanlike conduct - laughable :thumbd:

So frustrating watching that, NHL refs are such a joke, they call that off settting somehow then put the caps on the PP to score the game winner shortly after.

Seider actually hasnt been that physical this year compared to what was expected, but the last little while hes turned it up a notch. Hathaway is 6'3, 210 lbs, Dowd is 6'1, 200lbs so its not like those are two small players he was manhandling out there
