So how far off the board did Yzerman go exactly when they drafted this kid?
Very far off the board. Bob’s list is generally seen as the most predictive/accurate, as it’s the aggregate opinion of a number of scouts, and Seider was 16th on Bob’s final list: Americans set to dominate first round of the NHL Draft - TSN.ca

He was higher on Bob’s list than most, too. For example, Button had him 26th: Craig’s List: Final Rankings - TSN.ca

It was a hell of a pick by Yzerman and co., very impressive.

Yeah I liked him a lot and had him 13 on my board. Which was high relative to everyone else, but still not close to where the Wings had him.

Reactions: ponder
Inarguably the best defensemen we had since 2012esque Kronwall.
Yeah...the dropoff in play from the Seider/Leddy pairing to any of our other two pairings is just enormous. Seider is just so good with the puck and on defense. Once his shot gets a bit better, it will be just a matter of time when he starts being in the discussion for the Norris trophy.

Does he play PP1 or PP2 so far? Any chance he sticks on the units for the season? He seems to have good puck-handling skills.

He played on the first PP against the Habs last night but Hronek was also out so who knows if itll stay that way. Hes been on the powerplay all year though and the way hes playing vs every other wings dman I have no reason to doubt he stays there.

I dont really expect the scoring to keep up at the level it is right now obviously but he already looks like he could be a 35 point guy this year with his puck moving skills. His offensive game already looks like its at a point that some people were capping it at for his career

What’s scary is if Edvinsson pans out , Detroit will have two stud D that can each play 25 minutes a night. Not stylistically the same but it will be like the Pronger Neids combo . Two maybe Norris caliber D on same team.

If Edvinsson pans out and Hronek can be placed in a proper roster spot (second pair/power play) the Wings have a really solid D core to build around.

I am still not sold on Edvinsson's decision making but his play so far this season is making me feel a little better about the pick.

I think, if anything it will be more akin to Weber and Suter, not Pronger and Nieds. That would be insane in itself and it's not completely far-fetched as I think Seider will be the closest thing to a modern day Shea Weber -- with a more fluid game, minus the 104 mph bomb. But, does Edvinsson develop into a Ryan Suter? Those are some huge shoes to fill... but Yzerman has a knack for recognizing talent.

Let's play best case scenario...

Larkin = prime Pavelski
Raymond = Zetterberg
Bertuzzi = M. Tkachuk
Berggren = W. Nylander
Vrana = Fiala
Seider = Weber
Edvinsson = Suter
McIsaac = Muzzin
Cossa = top-end Dubnyk or Bishop

... then the Wings have a monster core to build around. But I think Zadina and Veleno will ultimately disappoint... and Stevie needs to land a few more gems over the next few years plus keep this core together in a cap world.

No disrespect to Suter and Weber, but based on their tools and the way they're trending - that's not really a best case scenario for Edvinsson and Seider.

Also, Dubnyk was posting .910sv% at the same age as Cossa is posting .940+. Not gonna pretend to know much about goalies but I see no reason to say that's the BEST outcome for Cossa.

With regards to the Calder Trophy, for me I look at the impact rookies have for their team and not just their offensive stats that matter.

In that regards despite Redwings forward Lucas Raymond leading all NHL rookies with 7 points(4 goals and 3 assists) in 6 games, I consider his teammate defenceman Moritz Seider my leading candidate for the Calder since he not only has 5 points(tied for 2nd overall among rookies in the NHL) in 6 games but he is also being played in all situations including on both special teams as a rookie defenceman, is among the leaders of his team in TOI(while leading all the rookies in the NHL in that category) and is already being relied upon to lead the Redwings defence this early in his career.

Raymond, Zegras, Caufield or other rookies could end up eventually having more points than Seider at the end of the season, but the impact Seider has for his team(both on offence and defence) trumps that in my estimation.

The only realistic best cases on this list are Seider=Weber, Vrana=Fiala and Cossa=top goalie. Everything else is a stretch and a half.

Bertuzzi is 3 years older than Matt Tkachuk… that’s not his ceiling.

Having optimism is nice, but you also have to be a little realistic. If Seider and Edvinsson become Weber and Suter that would be amazing. Although neither ended up winning the Norris, they were amongst the best defenders in the league for YEARS.
