Lol. We're already expected unbridled greatness from a rookie defenseman. Seider is a beast. The Wings are lucky.
Between him, Fox, Makar, Dahlin, Hughes, Heiskenen, Drysdale, and McAvoy (sure I am forgetting many others), the next batch of defenseman could be something we have not seen in several decades in terms of relative impact.

I mean it's not like Hedman, Karlsson, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Subban etc. were bad. Those guys still have a ways to go to meet those standards.

The 2008 draft alone was so nuts for dmen, maybe the GOAT dman draft. Top dmen:

Doughty
Karlsson
Pietrangelo
Josi
Carlson
Brodie
Spurgeon

As well as plenty of other decent ones:

Hamonic
Bogo
Schultz
Myers
MDZ
Gards
Voynov
Demers
Schenn
etc.

That list of “next batch of top D” has a ways to go to just match the 2008 draft, nevermind the whole generation. From the 2003-2009 drafts, you add in Hedman, Weber, Suter, Burns, McDonagh, Subban, Letang, Phaneuf, Byfuglien, Seabrook, Edler, EJ, Petry, Ellis, Ekholm, and I’m sure TONNES I’m forgetting.

The 2003-2009 drafts held an incredible crop of dmen, doubt the current young crop measures up. It’s a very nice group, I think there’s tonnes of total stud franchise dmen there, but 2003-2009 was pretty legendary.

If Caufield, Zegras, Pinto & co score within the 40-50 range I expect Seider to get some serious looks for the Calder.

But I’m expecting Caufield & Zegras to explode pretty soon.

Like...spontaneously combust explode? Because I don't think that Zegras, talented as he is, gets more than mid 50s this year. Same for Caufield.

As it stands Seider has 3 points in 2 games. I doubt he continues on this pace but at the end of the day I can see Seider get in the low to mid 30s just because of his amount of icetime and overall involvement in the play. That would be a pretty damn good rookie campaign for a guy billed as a defensive defenseman.

I don't think there's any reason to devalue his assists because they're secondary. He makes brilliant puck possession plays that deserve recognition.
I think Mo will be a guy who racks up a lot of secondary assists throughout his career because he moves the puck well and makes the right play. When you consistently make the right play, assists are going to come.

Fantastic game by Seider tonight. Helped break out the first two Detroit goals. Especially the second, dislodged the puck from the attacker behind the net and moved it up ice to spring the offense

Another casual 22 minutes and +2

Don’t forget the 2 defensive plays that he made prior to the Raymond and Bertuzzi goals. He safely cleared the zone both times and made some nifty passes on the breakout. No assists but those goals don’t happen otherwise.

It won't show up on the scoresheet but I actually thought the plays he made prior to both goals tonight were more impressive than his assists the other night. I've been among the more reserved fans on Seider's expectations this year, but in this game he was genuinely brilliant. Tonight I thought he looked like the player his most optimistic supporters say he is.

He’s settling into his groove. He made a good physical play to hit and separate someone from the puck, he looks confident with the puck on his stick in any of the 3 zones. He’s in the right spot and makes the simple plays a majority of the time. I figured it would take some time to fully feel confident in his game, and it looks like that time passed quick.

He’ll have some bumps along the road, but he looks the part.

I am not insulting the guy because he had very good positioning...but it's sad a hit like this is a highlight now. He barely touches the guy, more a commentary on how the game is going

The hit itself isn’t the highlight. It’s the fact that a rookie defender had great positioning and the strength to knock the forward off the puck 1v1. The hit isn’t the highlight.

I thought it was Seider’s best game. I could be wrong but the ice felt tilted when he was out there. Wondering if the advanced stats agree.

Well yeah he took a very good angle and it was a good play overall

Yeah. I don't think anyone is saying it was a huge hit. We're celebrating the sound defensive play in a 1 on 1 situation that he made look easy... that happened to be a hit that knocked the other guy down

He didnt get on the scoresheet but tonight was definitely his best game so far. Seiders game doesnt depend on points though anyways. For a guy 3 games into his career, his play to start the transition on Raymonds goal was silky. I even questioned if he would ever be able to be a strong powerplay type guy but 3 games in you can see he has it. Sky is the limit on him

Yep, he walks into the NHL and is playing 22 minutes a night right away, as many of us predicted. It seems like he can do everything, pretty amazing. We have a lot to be excited about with him and Edvinsson on the back end.

Agreed. His defensive play was noticeable in a good way. Columbus also looks like a terrible team but his play was superb. Can’t be unhappy with Seider’s play thus far.

Red Wings Seider Leading All NHL Rookies In Ice Time

The presence of Moritz Seider is quickly adding up to big numbers for the Detroit Red Wings. Three games into his NHL career, the 6-foot-4, 197-pound defenseman is proving to be a towering presence on the stats sheet as well as on the ice.
Seider is leading all NHL rookies in ice time. He’s playing 21:34 per game. While it’s certainly early in the season, thus far, only one other NHL first-year player, Nashville Predators defenseman Alexander Carrier (20:38), is playing as much as 20 minutes per night. Both Seider and Carrier are skating a league-high 26.7 shifts per game.
Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill made it abundantly clear that this excessive workload for Moritz Seider, Detroit’s top pick in the 2019 NHL entry draft is about on-the-job training. Seider is getting out there on the ice the old-fashioned way. He’s earning it.
“First off, we’re making those decisions beyond just his development,” Blashill said. “He’s getting those minutes because he’s earning those minutes. I think he’s done a good job.”
“I think for his personal development, one of the things that we’ve tried to do here, that we’ve done since (GM) Ken (Holland) was here and certainly with (current GM) Steve (Yzerman), is try not to bring players up until they’re really ready to make an impact,” Blashill said. “I think when you do that, then you get into a positon where you’re not playing minimal minutes. You’re playing more minutes and that’s gonna help you grow.”
Seider is playing in all situations. He’s leading all NHL first-year defenders in total power-player ice time (11:05) and power-play time on ice per game (3:42). He’s third among rooke rearguards in shorthanded ice time per game (1:50).
“Certainly Moritz has done some really good stuff,” Blashill said. “He’s got some real good abilities. I think there’s definitely room for growth and we’re gonna help him grow and try to become a great player.
“I don’t want Sides to be a good player, I want him to be a great player. And so we’re gonna push him to try and become a great player.”
Based on his past learning curve, the Red Wings are extremely confident that the best of Seider is yet to come.
Seider Displaying A Willingness To Learn

“His first month in (AHL) Grand Rapids (in 2019-20) was okay by all accounts from when I talked to people,” Blashill said of Seider’s rookie pro season. “And then he was really good after that.
“I think in Sweden (last season with Rogle) the same could be said a little bit. He’s somebody who seems to gather his information, whether it’s from the coaches, whether it’s just from experience, and is able to apply it and get better.
“That’s a huge part of player growth – can they take that information and then get better? There’s lots of things that go into that. One of which is being able to look in the mirror and know you gotta get better. Be willing to accept coaching. I don’t think that means criticism. It’s coaching. And then apply it and yet at the same time not lose your confidence.
“He seems to have that mental make up to be able to do that.”
