That's how pretty much all of his assists come. He doesn't make a lot of incredibly dangerous passes, but he's excellent at moving the puck to open teammates, and does it constantly.

Anyway, I thought the most impressive thing was all the PP time he was getting. He was their #1 guy at the point, and looked very comfortable doing it. I didn't expect that.
I’ve seen a decent number of his games (and am a major fan!), normally the assists come off nice puck movement in the offensive zone or transition. The two in this game were REALLY nothing though. Like the first, he made a nothing pass to Leddy, then Leddy made a nice stretch pass to Bertuzzi, who scored a beauty goal. His second assist was similar, nothing pass to DeKeyser in his own end, then DeKeyser I think just tried to clear it and get off the ice, but Bertuzzi hunted it down and scored a hero goal. The first was mostly Bertuzzi, some Leddy, while the second was all Bertuzzi.

The assists - for the second I can’t find a highlight showing his pass, but he was just trying to clear the zone on the PK, don’t think he had any idea Bertuzzi was coming out of the box and going to hunt it down:

Seider is going to put up lots of well deserved points, these two were really lucky though.

Eh thats what happens in hockey, you get assists off of nothing plays but then don’t get assists when you have the breakout pass that starts it all. In the end it all evens out. And I disagree I think he stood out a ton, on the powerplay on defense he was very good and rarely made a mistake. He joined the rush and he was a physical presence.
Yeah, he definitely had a good game. Just the scoresheet would make you think he was dominant, which he wasn’t IMO. Good game and impressive debut though, for sure - surprised how comfortable he was right away on the PP especially.

I'm loving the power play deployment he is receiving so far (I'm referring to the pre-season as well). I know he can handle it, but with Leddy and Hronek on the team, I wasn't sure if he'd get the opportunity this early. It seems like the team is happy to spread power play ice time equally among all three defenders.

This is kind of how I anticipate Seider putting up numbers. I don't ever see him being an offensive dynamo but he is going to make the safe solid play offensively and if he is getting 1st/2nd pair minutes, he is going to put up some points. You pair him with a more offensively minded dman and he allows those guys to make the play because he is safe defensively and skilled enough to make the breakout or start the play.

Eh. On the second he had the primary assist, a good clear on the PK that Bertuzzi was able to pick up. On the first he made a small but poised puck possession play. He was also involved in the 4-on-3 PP goal without getting an assist.
His MO at every level is that he picks up points due to the sheer volume of good plays he makes - this is no different.

What has made Mo so dominant in other leagues is his physical presence. He’s always done so without chasing. I wish he would play with more of that edge because he’s a different player without it… hopefully it’s just a matter of settling in and not galaxy brain Blashill over coaching as usual.

He had a big hit near the start of the game on Palat and almost dropped Sergachev after he stole that puck incident. Hes a rookie, Blashill isnt telling him to not play physical but hes not going to walk in game one and be killing guys left and right. Especially against a fast team like Tampa where hes getting his feet wet

Plus, it's one thing if your first game is Buffalo or something... but TB? That's the best team in the world. Against TB, you're gonna spend half the game just trying not to get embarrassed. It seems perfectly reasonable for Seider to dial it back a little for that game.

This would hold water if people were going around saying “2 points in his first game, seider is going to be a 100 point dman”

in reality people think and are saying, he is probably going to be a guy that can chip in 40ish points by making simple but effective plays.

I’m a big Seider fan, this wasn’t at all a comment on his potential. I was just saying “he had a good first game, but if you missed it, don’t get too excited about the 2 points part, they were lucky points.” Just a comment about this one game, where he played well, but did get lucky with the assists.

With that being said, he IS pretty skilled IMO, a very good skater who protects the puck well and has high IQ. I don’t agree that assists like this are going to be his main source of points - these were heroic solo efforts by Bertuzzi, where Mo just happened to play the puck within 2 passes. If that’s your main source of scoring, that makes you a 10 point guy, not a 40+ point guy, and I do think Mo will be a 40+ point guy. He’s gonna put up a tonne of points where he’s driving the play and creating chances for himself and others, but these two assists weren’t that.

Free advise, next time just follow the parade and dont be “too negative”.

Saves you a lot of time. He was great, you know, not just good.

Yeah he's a gamer. He's going to grow in to his size and dominate eventually. Lower point totals will save Detroit money in the meantime. Might have a Hedman curve.

His hitting will come as he adjusts to the speed. Like every defensemen he doesn’t want to put himself out of position to throw a hit, which he is usually pretty good about. Once he’s more comfortable knowing when he can get away with hits they will come.

Also it’s exciting he looked really friggen good in game 1. Probably our best defenseman, maybe after Hronek.

I missed game 2 but game 1 he was just okay. Not great, not bad. Certainly did better than most rookies would fare game 1 against TB. I’m sure he’ll get there but praising every little play is a bit much.

This I agree with you on. I think that this clip's play for example was a bit overly risky. I think quickly playing the puck to the other D would have been stronger and safer. It's not necessarily a highlight I'd showcase.

He's been good, and from the beginning he was my favorite D of the draft but yeah. A little forced.

you mean the play the defending forward was anticipating and which would have resulted in a likely turnover or broken play?

Seider makes the strong, safe play 90% of the time. If not more. Plays like this just showcase that he has more dynamic offensive ability in him than most realize. He just picks his spots and picks them well.

He had a good top 4 NHL defensemen game. He had a great first NHL game as a rookie against a 2-time back-to-back Stanley cup champs that already had a first game to shake off some rust.

You can view it either way. Not many prospects play their first game in the NHL against the best team in the world and look this poised. Let Wings' fans have this. We've been watching crap for the past 5+ years. Let us have something that gives us the feels good.

free advise : don’t give terrible advise. Dude posted some great, matter of fact points. If you want to go somewhere to circle jerk over players maybe try Reddit. Saves everyone a lot of trash to read.
