If you guys can’t tell, us Wings fans have really soured on Cholo

And rightfully so. The kid makes Brendan Smith look like a mental giant in the defensive zone.

Draft year he's projected to go in the mid to late 2nd round. Questions about his defensive abilities abound. Holland of course reaches for him despite there being DeBrincat, Adam Fox, Sam Steel, Brett Howden and Sam Girard still on the board.
D+1 Couldn't elevate his play to earn minutes in the NCAA, bounced out and went to the WHL.
D+2 Has a good offensive year in the WHL but the defensive deficiencies are still there and not really worked on.
D+3 Makes the NHL. Was hot through the preseason and first few games of the regular season but when games got tighter he started to panic, made poor clearing attempts, couldn't find his man on the breakout, and gave the puck up for lots of dangerous scoring chances. -20 in 52 games. Gets demoted to AHL, plays mediocre.
D+4 Starts out in the NHL and somehow is even worse than he was when he first made the NHL. -26(!!!) in 36 games. -15 in 30 AHL games and looked out of place on the 2nd pair down there in a bad way.

Cholowski was a terrible pick and at this point he should be moved on from. Maybe we can fleece Ken Holland for another draft pick for Cholowski because he loves picking up his DRW castoffs. And Yzerman doesn't seem afraid to move on from Holland's mistakes.

Seider, Albert Johansson, McIsaac (if healthy) Tuomisto, William Wallinder, Eemil Viro all look to have NHL potential and all look to be leaps and bounds smarter in the defensive zone. There isn't a place in Detroit for Cholowski anymore.

FYI Yzerman made a terrible pick in Libor Hajek in the same draft and passed on DeBrincat, Fox, Girard. That bottom half of the 1st in 2016 sucked.

I can't wait to see Seider in the NHL myself. I wanted the Oilers to pick him (can't go wrong with another German stud).

Offensive potential is extremely hard to predict in young dmen, partially because a lot depends on the opportunity they are given at the NHL level. There aren't many dmen who can put up lots of points without being a fixture on their team's first unit power play.

Moritz seems to have the defensive side of the game figured, and with his size, reach, and physicality, he will certainly be a top 4 defenseman for Detroit from the moment he steps onto the NHL ice. Whether or not he puts up offensive numbers remains to be seen (Hronek seems at this point to have the inside track for power play time), but if Moritz is given a chance to run the power play, I have no doubt he can be a solid two-way defenseman similar to players like Pietrangelo, Doughty, Pronger, Lidstrom, and Hedman. I'm not saying he will be as good as those players, but those are some big-bodied defenseman known for playing well at both ends of the ice.

I can’t wait to see him in the NHL. I love defenseman like him. He can skate, he’s physical and he’s good with the puck. Very difficult to see him not being a solid top 4 at worst. He may not put up 60 points in the NHL but fast, right-handed puck-moving D are paid well for a reason.

I don't really understand why Seider's offensive potential keeps getting questioned.

Compare to other 2019 D:

Philip Broberg: 5 points in 17 games for Skellefteå
Tobias Björnfot: 2 points in 8 games for Djurgården
Victor Söderström: 6 points in 12 games for AIK in Allsvenskan, a tier lower than SHL

He'll put up points because he is very, very good and is going to get a lot of icetime in all situations. 1st or 2nd PP unit seems like a minor detail tbh.

You seemed to miss my point. I'm not questioning his offensive potential. I was saying that a lot of his potential to score points will be based on opportunity. I strongly disagree that 1st or 2nd unit PP time is a minor detail, as you say. There are very few NHL dmen who can put up significant points without 1st unit power play opportunity. Some do, but the ones that excel offensively are usually on the team's first PP unit.

Is it cause they’re not on the team’s 1st PP or that they’re just not that good offensively?

It likely also depends on how top heavy a team is, if there’s a massive quality difference on the units.
Anyway I don’t think Seider is very limited in his offensive potential. Like a Seth Jones he won’t be judged solely on offensive numbers, but he will put up points.

To elaborate on my above post, I look at Seider and I can't help but wonder about his ultimate potential. We all know he can play defense. He is a monster and will be a fixture for the Wings for years. However, I watched him play in the Juniors and he showed flashes of offensive potential. Yet, I am trying to be cautious with my expectations of him. Then, he goes to the AHL and puts up impressive offensive numbers. Still, I try to be cautious here. Then, he goes to the SHL, and he still puts up impressive numbers. When I look at the footage, I see shades of Hedman and Pronger. He may never reach their level, and that is totally fine, but I wonder "what if" he is given first unit power play time, AND he continues to develop the offensive side of his game. He could very well be the "whole package".

Either way, Detroit hit a homerun with this pick. Even if he never becomes an elite two-way defenseman in the NHL, he's a definite keeper.

Is it cause they’re not on the team’s 1st PP or that they’re just not that good offensively?

Could be either situation.

Look at Pietrangelo, who at times has taken a 2nd unit role to the likes of Shattenkirk, or Doughty to the likes of Muzzin. Provorov to Gostisbehere, etc.

This guy is my favorite prospect. A throwback with him loving to dish out hits but also mixed with modern day skills with his mobility and puck moving. They just don't make them like this anymore.

He just has the "it" factor and it pisses me off that the Wings snagged him 3 spots before the Oilers with all due respect to Broberg who is a fine prospect but not in the same stratosphere of potential.

I wonder if Button would have an aneurysm if anybody pointed out his criticism of Seider being picked at #6.

... He sure did lose it any time somebody disagreed with him at this year's draft.
