... What? Im saying it's a great thing and a great pick by the Wings so im not sure what you're trying to say here
He’s a great pick. The Red Wings did a good job. I object to you calling the pick a “reach” though. He was BPA on Detroit’s board. If he was Detroit’s number fifteen guy and they said, “Let’s take a chance on this guy!”, then you’ve got a reach. Yzerman stated prior to the draft that they don’t pay attention to McKenzie’s list or any other such lists because they’re just noise. They made their list, and the “gutsy” move would’ve been to say, “Screw it! Our scouts are morons! McKenzie and Pronman think we should take this other guy, so we will just do that.” The Red Wings did their homework, and we are seeing the fruits of that. I don’t care what the other people in the building thought cause it’s irrelevant.

Nah. Plenty of times scouts think they might see a gem but go with the safer pick and take the prospect everyone "expects" them to take.

When you come out of left field and take a guy way higher than expected youre open to critism if it doesnt work out (Sweeney 2015) much more than if you had taken Cozens or Broberg who were almost unanimously seem as better prospects at the time. It takes balls and a keen eye to take that kind of risk to pass on those guys to take a different prospect seen as lesser at the time

I just don't understand this way of thinking.

Bob McKenzie's list is a great resource for fans and the media, but that's all it is. It's based on opinions of people in the industry, true, but it's an average, and as such, it doesn't account for team philosophies. For instance, according to Hakan Andersson, Yzerman puts a premium on compete level. I think that shows in a lot of his picks. If he'd have placed a greater emphasis on skill, I'd wager he would've selected one of Cozens or Zegras.

The Detroit Red Wings have over twenty people involved in their scouting staff. Why bother paying hundreds of thousands on a scouting staff if you're just going to rely on pundits like Bob McKenzie? That's a lot like shelling out $50,000 to a fancy design firm only to fall back on Wordpress.

I'd say no. He's not even the highest scoring defenceman on his own team and as of now isn't in the top 10 in the league. Fantastic prospect though. Probably a lock for ROY.

His game isn't just about scoring. Watch how he dominates the game and tilts the ice whenever he's on. Then look at the advanced analytics and you'll see that the eye test and advanced analytics line up.

He is just downright controlling games for his team, breaking up the opposing team's rushes, halting the other team's possession in his zone, and leading the breakout from his end most of the game. Rookie of the year for sure, likely the best defender in the SHL this season despite being 11th in defense scoring, and very easily a top 5 player in the league this season.

Agree with everything but he's not the league MVP.

That makes sense I was just wondering with how dominate his advanced analytics are and the fact he seemingly has been the best player in the league pretty much since he entered if he could force his way even while missing some games. He probably missed too many though so that makes sense.

By this logic there is no such thing as a draft steal. Its simply doing your job then

Bit much to say best player in the league.
Right or not, Gelinas probably would get the nod over Seider if people voted best D in Rögle.

Seider just got blasted into the boards and left the game hurt. Hope he's ok. He's had a great start to his year.

Dude is a f***ing wrecking ball at the SHL level. He's going to be physically dominant in the NHL too, once he bulks up. He's only 19, and at 6'4" 207 lbs he could easily add another ~20 lbs while retaining his speed/mobility, he's got a real big frame.

I continue to see Shea Weber minus the slapper when I watch Seider.
