I am telling you. With Stuetzle up front and this guy eating up minutes in the backend, Germany would have medaled and knocked off at least one of Russia or Finland. Never mind 17th 2020 pick Lucas Reichel out with COVID regardless.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over the fact that after a miserable, horrific, embarrassing season on a historical scale, the Wings ended up picking 4th in this draft. They missed out on getting exactly the type of player they needed in Stutzle by one f***ing pick. It would’ve been a marketing boon to have 2 (likely) German stars on one NHL team. Michigan even has one of the highest populations of German ancestry in the country. I hope Edmonton never wins another Cup.

What does Edmonton have to do with this?

Poor us we got Raymond. Last year people said the same about Seider... These are prospects, and while the WJC's are great to see alot of high end prospects at once.. Its definitely does not move the scale for much in terms of how I view a player.

Playing on a club for multiple seasons, learning a system, learning team defense, breakouts vs a condensed national all star tournament is how i view it. These are circumstances a high end player will play in a select few times in his life.

I'm going to comeback to this thread one day when raymond outscores stuztle though I don't disagree it was completely BS that detroit didn't get 1st overall

Plays old time hockey with ice in his veins. Real level headed kid, reminds of me Lidstrom demeanor. Best defensive prospect in the game. He and Stutzle are close, going to be real exciting seeing Tkachuk and Stutz facing off against him.

I get it that he is a great prospect but "insane pick"? He was drafted 6th overall, not 20th. Getting a great prospect at 6 is doing your job not pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

Almost everyone called it a bad pick there, including Wings fans. Nobody expected him to do what he’s done so far.

Someone recently posted the draft day portion of this thread. I initially thought the same thing as you, but when I re-read the thread, I was surprised at the number of people supporting the pick. I don't think a lot of people thought he would progress like he has, but there wasn't much outright condemnation either. For the most part, I think the pick just caught a lot of people off guard. It sure stunned me. Sure, there was some negativity, but not as much as I remembered.

Seider was very impressive at worlds before his draft. After that it wasn't really a huge shocker that he was picked where he was. I don't think it was considered a bad pick. It was an expected pick and plenty of people had him ranked there. Although, the reason for that might be because it was rumored Wings were going to pick him for quite a while.

When that player was typically rated around 20 and was considered a massive reach... Yes that's an insane pick.
If he traded down for some additional draft capital or players and drafted him at 20, yes, THAT would be insane.

I concur. There were plenty of people aware of Seider’s potential by draft day. I had him at #7 in my final ranking and I wasn’t alone. He was always a well rounded high potential prospect who just happened to be playing in an under the radar situation.

The same was true with Stutzle. It was pretty clear he was a top 10 talent at least a year before his draft took place. Those who had watched him had him ranked accordingly.

These two stories will hopefully inspire more amateur couch scouts to dive into lesser watched leagues.

Yep. It certainly inspired me to up my game as a thoroughly pedestrian HFboards amateur scout lol. I've started paying way more attention to...well, stuff I never paid attention to before.

Uhhh... Or he knew he would be that good and didnt want to take the chance someone would draft him first?

I don't know why it needs to be explained how reaching for someone 10 or so picks before hes expected to be picked in the first round and being right is smart drafting and not just "doing your job"...

So Yzerman looked at the “consensus list” and “reached”? I am pretty sure that the Red Wings’ scouting department developed their own draft list and didn’t rely on supposed expectations. Seider was the top guy on their list when it was Detroit’s turn to draft. It’s really that simple. Doing their job.

I was in the arena when he was picked. The gasp when Yzerman picked him was audible even in the nosebleeds. No one expected him to go 6th over Broberg and maybe Soderstrom. Took guts to pick him that early when he could've traded down with the Canucks who was targeting Zegras and making a statement in their arena.. after the first round, all everyone was talking about in there was Seider and Yzerman.
