1) Trust me I watched Dumba for multiple seasons in the dub, I know he was a big risk taker in juniors. However, he has cleaned that part of his game almost a thousandfold. I wasn't comparing Woo to Dumba when both were in juniors, but Woo as he is now with Dumba as he is now.

Dumba is still not so hot of a defender. If Woo is, you're damning him with faint praise by comparing him to Dumba.

2) Lets wait until Woo gets the physical maturity of Matt, when their shots could eventually become the same.

Dumba had a great shot from the moment he stepped into the NHL.

3) Woo and Dumba are smaller when you consider the average size for defenders across the league. Woo is in the same phase as Dumba was when he was in the WHL.

is he that good defensively ??
Extremely sound, in my viewings I have never seen him “get beat”, and he’s very good at containing opponents in the corner and against the wall. He’s the kind of guy that opponents usually enter the zone as far away from; he’s not a big guy, and he tends to pick his targets, but he knows how to lay big (and more importantly, effective) hits.

I had hoped for more offense from him this season, but he’s still firmly in the latter part of my first round.

Clean Hits on Substack
is Ed Jovanovski a good comparable in terms of style?

I became a die-hard hockey fan in 1996 and I remember the Florida Panthers from that era well. I'm also a Coyotes fan, and got to watch Jovo play for my team for half a decade. I also remember well always being a little bit on edge whenever he was on the ice for the Nucks against my Coyotes. He was always a wildcard.

At least that's how I remember him. I might be a little foggy, but my recollection is that Ed Jovanovski was a very large, powerful and extremely viscous player. He was quick to the punch and has a highlight real of kayos. He had every physical tool and used them to play an intimidating, dangerous game complete with huge open ice hits. He was also an exceptionally gifted offensive defenseman. Again, had all the tools. He had over 20 goals and over 200 PIMS in his draft year, despite playing only 50 games. As a rookie in the NHL he put up 10 goals and over 100PIMs.

For all his tools, one thing Jovanovski always lacked was smarts. Hockey smarts (as evidenced in his on-ice play) but also the nickname given to him by the staff in Florida that followed him throughout his career was "Special Ed" because he seemed to never really "get it" either on or off the ice. He was blunder prone, and poorly disciplined until very late in his career. Most of his career it meant that his was a below average defensive player.

It seems like Woo may have less extremes at the poles. Not as gifted, and not as sloppy. Maybe more like the 36 year old version of Jovo.

Jovo was big and very chippy/rugged. Not a ballet dancer on his skates. Woo doesn't sound similar, with his smaller stature, and better wheels.

Easily could happen. He’s had 2 concussions this year and hasn’t looked good since the first one. He was never really a clear top 20 guy at any point this year. Which almost always puts you in potential 2nd round range.

I've heard from other sources, that his game dropped off quite a bit after that first concussion. How much of a concern is it, that he won't be the same player again?

Reviving this now the Canucks have drafted him (#37) but he's stated that he's never had a concussion.

Well, that’s interesting. Who was it who said he had, I wonder?

The only link to a concussion is from a Hf Boards post from 93 Leafs. He doesn’t link it to any source.

From 93Leafs:
“He’s had 2 concussions this year and hasn’t looked good since the first one. He was never really a clear top 20 guy at any point this year. Which almost always puts you in potential 2nd round range.”

Or maybe he just meant ‘2 injuries’ and accidentally/mistakenly slipped ‘concussions’ in there.

I heard the first one was a concussion, and the second one was actually a hip pointer in the end. I could be wrong on this though.

Edit: But if the kid is staunchly denying it, I'll believe him over anything I heard.

I watch this kid every home game. He was injured a few games ago against Regina, hasn't played since.

His game is really all about shutting the opposition down. He's a beast in his own end. Built like a tank and loves to get physical. His skating, specifically his edgwork, is amazing. He is very evasive against forecheckers and often leaves them behind as he pulls a move and gets the puck up ice quickly. His transition passing is one of his best assets as he can retrieve the puck, keep it away from forecheckers and transition it up ice quickly. He can also QB a PP very well and has a great shot from the point. All in all I think he has a very pro-style game already with pro-ready size. I'd liken him to a Vlasic type shutdown and transition defencemen with a better shot. He has been an absolute minute muncher for Moose Jaw, plays in all situations and was logging upwards of 30 minutes a night some games.
Great to know thanks for posting this last year. Getting excited :)

Well, that’s interesting. Who was it who said he had, I wonder?

Early in the season he was out with an upper body injury and everyone around the rink in MJ was saying it was a concussion. Though nothing was ever confirmed. He was injured again and many believed it to be another concussion but it was actually a hip pointer.

If he is denying that it was a concussion then I believe him. But I've heard from people inside the Warriors staff saying that it was. Although it could have just been precautionary. He might have been showing symptoms but never actually got diagnosed with a concussion.

Thanks, that makes sense. I remember reading that he had suffered concussions from official-ish sources.

Yeah there was a lot of misinformation going around. But the kid is good to go now and should be a great defencemen for the Canucks.

Yeah, I considered him as a first rounder. When I watched him in the first half of last year, he was a consistent dominant force. Kid’s smart, fearless, fast, and has to be one of if not the best body checker in the draft class.

Yeah he doesn't line guys up and destroy them. Just uses his size really well to apply pressure.

Should come to the KHL next season. He won't make Vancouver anyway and isn't eligible to play in the AHL, but there is a good chance, he'll make Kunlun, because he's Chinese, and they need Chinese players.

He will get destroyed in the KHL mate... The SHL or Liiga are a better fit.
