is Ed Jovanovski a good comparable in terms of style?
I became a die-hard hockey fan in 1996 and I remember the Florida Panthers from that era well. I'm also a Coyotes fan, and got to watch Jovo play for my team for half a decade. I also remember well always being a little bit on edge whenever he was on the ice for the Nucks against my Coyotes. He was always a wildcard.
At least that's how I remember him. I might be a little foggy, but my recollection is that Ed Jovanovski was a very large, powerful and extremely viscous player. He was quick to the punch and has a highlight real of kayos. He had every physical tool and used them to play an intimidating, dangerous game complete with huge open ice hits. He was also an exceptionally gifted offensive defenseman. Again, had all the tools. He had over 20 goals and over 200 PIMS in his draft year, despite playing only 50 games. As a rookie in the NHL he put up 10 goals and over 100PIMs.
For all his tools, one thing Jovanovski always lacked was smarts. Hockey smarts (as evidenced in his on-ice play) but also the nickname given to him by the staff in Florida that followed him throughout his career was "Special Ed" because he seemed to never really "get it" either on or off the ice. He was blunder prone, and poorly disciplined until very late in his career. Most of his career it meant that his was a below average defensive player.
It seems like Woo may have less extremes at the poles. Not as gifted, and not as sloppy. Maybe more like the 36 year old version of Jovo.
